This great, mellow tune from Free's final release "Heartbreaker', features John Bundrick on keyboards, Tetsu Yamauchi on bass, and Wendell Richardson on guitar (Fraser had left the group and Kossoff had very little input due to his drug addiction.) Enjoy everyone!!

A truly beautiful ballad. So well constructed. Deceptively simple and yet containing many weaves of subtle textures. Piano and keyboards are the foundation but supplemented by solid bass lines and drums with guitar licks. As always Rodgers voice is so melodic, expressive and soulful. Otis Redding sings through him...one of Rodgers heroes. As comments below speak to: what maturity in people so young. I started listening to this in my teens, now in my 60s, and love it even more. Thank you Free for giving me a basis for life in all its many colours. You sing about joy, love, fun, sadness, depression, ecstasy, and even metaphysical experiences. Yes your band life was short but so full, so prolific, so profound. Some people live fast and give much, you were one of these.

In 1971, my mother had me when she was 20. I remember free and Paul Rodgers with Bad Company since I was three years old. My mom has since passed. Paul Rodgers takes me back to my beautiful place with his voice. Me and my mother got a chance to see Bad Company in St Augustine Florida before she passed. It was amazing. I'll never forget it

After the Beatles in the 60's, Free were my favourite band growing up in my teenage years of the 70's. Fire & Water, Highway & Heartbreaker were among my favourite albums of the decade, The amazing voice of Paul Rodgers, the virtuoso guitar playing of Paul Kossoff & the innovative bass of Andy Fraser was a joy to behold, Free's musical legacy will live for a long time to come.

Now that I'm older, I am so surprised by the depth of this song, a song that was created by such young men in their early 20's. Today I get it now boys....I'm such a slow learner. An amazing and talented group.

"Muddy Water" I was born on the muddy water I didn't know right from wrong My mom said now look here son I'll show you how it's done Take you a woman and treat her right She'll be by your side every night and day The first time you deceive her You've broken her spell Then I had bad luck Like a fool I fell where I stood I was walking in the rain with my shoes untied Tryin' to find a dry place to hide To hide. But I'd rather sleep than say a word I don't believe a word that's heard The first time I deceived you I held it inside Take you a woman and treat her right She'll be by your side every night and day The first time you deceive her You've broken her spell I held it inside Like a fool I swallowed my pride I was walking in the rain with my shoes untied Tryin' to find a dry place to hide I was walking in the rain with my shoes untied Tryin' to find a dry place to hide To hide. I was walking in the rain

It's 'common knowledge' now that Koss lost his golden touch because of his fascination with 'drugs'. However, I respectfully beg to differ. I was very fortunate to count him among my tribe of friends, and made music with him in the studio, as well as just sitting around the house, tho' never live. Koss was a mighty man with a wonderfully twisted sense of humor, which I believe flowed from the same well as his unique way of playing. Yeah, he wrestled with his demons, which made gigging more difficult as time went on. But I NEVER heard him play without his heart and soul come pumping up thru his fingers,, and there was no drug ever made that could take that away from him. Much Respect.

No matter what, Kosd went far too early... Like many others before and after his demise, I could weep at the state of the music industry now, the world is a poorer place without bands like Free, the Heartbreaker album is simplistic music, but my God it must be up there with the greatest albums from that wonderful era, I will never tire listening to it.. I am 67 now but my head is 23 when I hear this superb album.. Rest in peace Koss you will never be forgotten.

@@robertdickson9809 You should dig below the music that the big labels sell you. You'll find that there are many bands that are nearly as good. I only tell you this because they need people like you in order to survive at all. Because the business of the present day doesn't want them to.

I'm afraid that comment simply doesn't ring true to me. Listen to the bootlegs of latter-day Free concerts in which Koss participated (any of them after their first breakup). His later Back Street Crawler gigs too. He'd lost all the dexterity and sense of timing he'd had prior to the first breakup. When he takes a solo his fingers sound like they were just crashing into each other. His heart and soul may have still been there but his chops clearly were not any more. And it certainly wasn't a fascination with knitting that caused this to happen.

Heartbreaker the best rock album ever made, even without Fraser and most of the time Kossoff, still incredible, and maybe gives those who know an insight as to what a super group Free could have become?
@chriscampbell9191

You're right, it's a great album -- my favorite Free album by far. Even though Fraser was gone, Tetsu brings a heaviness to the bottom end that fits the sound, and Kossoff's leads are still present on the album -- when he was playing, it still sounded awesome.

Snuffy Walden backed up Koss on Free's final album Heartbreaker, which was released in 1973 (Walden plays on 'Common Mortal Man', 'Easy on My Soul' and 'Seven Angels'. He also played on back street crawler's second Street, Paul's last album. Apparently Koss was very upset at the heartbreaker sessions and said, (What the fk is he doing here?)

Written by John "Rabbit Bundrick" with guitar by Snuffy Waldren (not Paul Kossoff, who wasn't on all Heartbreaker tracks nor Wendell Richardson who was on the subsequent tour as an ill-advised replacement for Kossoff).
@wincanton2
@wincanton2 6 лет назад
I would just like to correct the comment Tom Kane, the credits on the album sleeve are inaccurate; Kossoff plays on the whole of side 1 and the final track on side 2, "Seven Angels". Walden's guitar appears on tracks 2, 3, and 4 of side 2, so "Seven Angels" features both him and Kossoff.

i had the intuition that somebody like Luther Grosvenor (or his other name Ariel Bender) was maybe one of the best potential choices as a new guitarist for the band... an opportunity was lost there... he had the blues touch surely more than mr Ralphs...
