Has this happened to you? You or someone else did a routine check or replacement of your car's air filter and then your check engine light came on a short time later. Using a code reader revealed one or more codes that indicated problems with the emission control system.
Potential solutions to those codes can be expensive. However, when you get a combination of codes such as P0440, P0441, and P0446, you may be experiencing a simple vacuum leak as a result of knocking off a hose while removing the air filter box. This is a common problem and is easy to fix.
This was the case with a 2002 Toyota Highlander as described in this short DIY video. It shows the specific cause and the simple solution.

You are the man! I got check engine light for my 2000 Camry/Solara and got codes p0440 and p0446. Redid my air filter not too long ago too and when I checked that little plug it was just hanging!! Saved me so much time & $$. RU-vid saves all. Thanks a lot man

After watching this video, I checked my 2002 RX300(Also received P0400 P0401and P0406 codes) and sure enough, my line was disconnected. Hooked it up and no more codes. Thanks for sharing this video.

He he he he he! You've got a happy friend here! I've got my check engine light for quite a while. Got code reading at Autozone this morning and boom, 7 codes! 3 of my codes were P0440, P0441, P0446. Went to check my 02 Highlander after watching your video and what? The exact very same hose was disconnected at the bottom! I put it back as you said, disconnected one side of the battery for 10 minutes to reset the check engine light and then reconnected battery. At this time, no more check engine light! Thank you sooooo verrrry mucccchhhh! Now I am waiting to see how to fix the other codes (P1346, P0335, P0340, P1350) if ever they come back. And I still have the VSC light on. Anyway, at least one headache ($$$$$) is gone! God bless you for sharing this!

Awesome. My wife's car is this exact same vehicle. 2002 Toyota Highlander. We had it serviced a month ago and after a short time, the check engine light came on. I looked all over the engine compartment and found nothing wrong. So I finally bought a cheap code reader. Checked it this morning and those same codes came up. So I typed in the code here on RU-vid and sure enough...your video came up. I went out to the car and there it was...the hose was not attached. Thank you sir.

A big THANK YOU to the author. This is the best video that shows me where is the vacuum hose (tracking down from VSV = Vacuum Switch Valve). I watched at least 10 videos before this and none guided me to the vacuum hose. Yes, last month I changed the air filter in my RX300 and then BAM! (just like you said), I got the check engine light on. I followed other videos to change: gas cap (easiest & lowest cost $11 at Pep Boys) to the whole evap system (near the gas tank for $360 bought thru Amazon). After each fix. I used my OBD II to clear the car computer and turn the check engine light off. However, twice check engine light turned back on after every 100 miles. Finally, I was lucky to come across your video and found my vacuum hose was loose. I think this 3rd fix will cure the problem for good. Note: My car is RX300 not Highlander (but all-in-all are in the same Toyota corp's design) but your verbal instruction is so clear + the video guided each step so I found the vac hose with no problem.

I am pleased as punch that this was helpful and that you had a successful resolution. I am sure that it was disheartening when the light came back on after each previously attempted fix. Thanks for the kind comments. I really appreciate it.

This happened to our '03 Highlander three times...the first was at the dealer, the second at an Oil 'n Go and the latest at the same dealer. The first two times, reconnecting the hose to the air filter box as you've demonstrated solved the problem. This latest issue, I reconnected the hose, but the check engine light did not go off. The mechanic at a trusted repair shop told me the codes had to be reset, which he did, but after a few days, the light came on again! I'm now informed that the Purge VSV needs replacing. The dealer wants $167 to do the job, but I see the VSV part on ebay for as little as $47...and I may be able to replace it myself if it's what you've identified as the purge valve in your video. I'll also check with my local autozone as mentioned in another youtube video. Thanks for your demonstration...it's spot on!

THANKS for the tip. Changed my air filter 3 months ago on my 2003 Highlander and just started seeing the Check Engine Light today. OBD-II code reader said trouble at P0441, 442, 446. I'm puzzled why the light wouldn't have come on sooner. I looked today for the disconnected hose and BINGO, there it was. Reconnected the hose and now waiting to see what happens. You have a new subscriber. Thanks again.

Thanks for posting! have a 2003 Highlander with codes 441, 442, 446. O Reilly was great with codes and print out, then began researching. Began thinking of what's been done to car lately (gas fill up, oil change, etc) and if one of those incidents could have caused the codes. Sure ennough, had oil change 1 week ago and guy tried to sell me air filter based on my dirty one he pulled. Putting air filter back in he missed a hose that got disconnected when pulling air filter cover off. Hose is back on, all is good now. Def check simple/low cost things first!

Thanks for this. My 2001 Highlander had this same issue, same three codes. In my case it was the TOP end of the hose that was loose, but it was the same hose. I had some work done - BY TOYOTA - just before this happened so I can only conclude that it was the Toyota service guys who left me with this problem... which is what I pay extra to take it to Toyota service to AVOID!
@MichaelPhillipsatGreyOwlStudio
Thanks so much for this! I knew about it, and it had happened before, but it had been so long since it happened that I couldn't for the life of me remember where the hoses that typically get dislodged were. This video saved me probably at least a $125 engine inspection fee. I think I'm going to take a photo of the hoses for future reference.

Thanks for sharing, I also had the same PO441 code after checking the filter. I just took a look, and low and behold that hose was not connected. I just reconnected it and we'll see if it fixes it the code. I have a smog upcoming, and from what I've read it could either be a hose, gas cap, or other type of leak that would be somewhat costly to diagnose & repair. Worse if it is in fact the canister they are talking about a $600-1K fix. Let's hope it was just the hose :)
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 9 лет назад
Gustav Petruske III Like you, when I researched my P0441 code, I also read lots of potentially scary and costly causes. If you found and repaired a disconnected vacuum hose, you most likely have resolved the issue. You should know within a day of driving after clearing your codes. The check engine light should remain off.

I had the same problem with my 04 corolla s. Luckily the check engine light would go away randomly just before registration was due. The car would pass and the weird thing not throw any faukts. I was told it was the canister. But would need to run a machine to see where the leak was at. If i tried to fix it and wouldn't pass the smog, the state of California would still give me my sticker if i spent x amount in trying to solve the problem. Well my registration is up again on may. Check engine light on. My stereo had gone out and i decided to replace the fuse. Upon replacing it, i noticed one of them was busted and the other one was good. Both of them however had corrosion. I pulled out all of the smaller fuses and they all had corrosion. I replaced all of them, turned on the car.... No check engine light. Apparently there are two fuses that do control the emissions system. Try to replace them. Worked for me. I took it to get it smogged and nothing popped up. Car passed with flying colors.

Another occaisional fix is to screw your GAS CAP on super tight. Code still doesn't go away? Buy a brand new knock-off gas cap, $10. Still didn't go away? Get an good OEM one from a junkyard for $1, really making sure the GASKET is good. Still didn't go away? Get the Toyota one from the $tealership for $32. STILL didn't go away? Order a gas tank vapor pressure VSV solenoid for YOUR car, a knock-off one from China, $55 and three weeks of shipping. It's pretty cramped installing it down by the gas tank, though, so you'll need a super bright flashlight and jackstands. The dealership would have charged you $500 for that, though.

We also have a 2002 Highlander. The brake lights tend to go out as if the bulbs are bad. But, the connectors can get dirty so that they do not make a good connection. Cleaning those up where they mount to the body can help and using some dielectric grease on the contacts.

@WorseThanChiggers Год назад
Remember that a code doesn't tell you want's wrong. It just tells you what the effect is of what's actually wrong. So, you or your mechanic will need to go through the proper diagnostic procedures to determine what the actual cause is for the codes that you're seeing. There are quite a few things that can cause the above codes. So, nobody can tell you for sure without performing systematical diagnostics. I wish I had a crystal ball that would do that.

Dude please help me. I have the same codes on my 01 Camry. I ran over a huge rode bump on a high speed and since then my car lost its torque and the check engine light popped up.
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 2 года назад
If you have the same codes, check all of your vacuum hoses and your air intake hose. Something may have fallen off or cracked. Failing that, you'll need to delve deeper into diagnosing the cause for those codes.

how long does it take for the light to go off? I just put the tube back together and hoping that was the problem
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 8 лет назад
Give it 2 or 3 days with several drive cycles and it should go off on its own. Or, I've been told that you can probably disconnect the battery for 1/2 hour and that'll clear it. Hope that helps!

My car rumbled when I found out about my check engine light was blinking...is this usual when the light turns on? Can I easily fix this myself?
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 7 лет назад
What you describe as a rumble could mean many things. Your car's check engine light is telling you that something is wrong and it might be an easy DIY fix or could be something requiring professional help. The next step is connect an OBD2 code reader to the data port under the dashboard to read the trouble codes that are now stored in the car's computer. Only then will you know which components may be affected and where to begin diagnostic testing of those components.

after the fix of these codes, does the check engine light need to be reset?
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 8 лет назад
+Shannon Elliott You can clear the codes to reset the check engine light immediately or wait for it to go out on its own after several driving cycles.

Good video, my 05 corolla has a p0441 code. I have had the purge valve replaced, carbon canister and gas cap. The light still comes on. What is going on ....
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 5 лет назад
I suggest finding a qualified mechanic who will first diagnose the problem and determine which component is at fault rather than throwing expensive parts and labor at it in hopes that it might solve the problem. A qualified technician who knows how to observe and interpret the live data stream from the computer would more likely resolve the issue successfully. Matt has a great channel here that uses this scientific philosophy. Too bad so many pros don't observe it. ru-vid.com

@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 9 лет назад
ehu777 If you have a code reader/scanner, you can use that to reset the code after repairing the problem. Otherwise, it should clear itself after a few driving cycles or days.

hello.I'm Samson and my check engine pop up in the dash board and this problem persist even when I remove battery terminal. what is the cause and how can I resolve this problem.
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 7 лет назад
Hi Samson. You will first need to read the codes or have someone do it for you to determine the cause of the check engine light. Only then will you be able to determine what test procedures need to be performed to diagnose the actual problem.

@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 9 лет назад
Wow and thanks! You're very observant. I didn't catch that subtlety in my final edits to the scene. If you look closely, there are 2 cuts between removing the filter and reinstalling it which is when I discovered the error in my ways. I cut out the bit where I flipped it back over. The pursuit of perfection never ends.

Hey dude, Im having those same codes on my toyota celica 2000 and I cant find the issue. Please help me
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 7 лет назад
That combination of codes likely indicates a major vacuum leak. Was there some recent work done on the car that could give you a clue? Trace all the vacuum hoses and see if one has come loose. They can get old and split, too. Listening for a hissing noise might also lead you in the right direction. It could also be hidden problem like a ruptured brake booster diaphragm or, worse yet, an intake gasket leak.
@dosisdiariadeinternet7666
@dosisdiariadeinternet7666 7 лет назад
worsethanchiggers thank you for replaying !! there has not been any work done to the car. The codes appeared 3 days after putting gas. it has a celica gts injen air intake from the previews owner. I have traced all hoses and I can not find any leak. Breaks work well and break lines seem fine. It is my fist car and I don't know much about cars.

will this work on a toyota prius 2010?
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 7 лет назад
A Prius is a totally different animal but it does have a small gasoline engine. So, it should have vacuum lines and the principles should be the same.

I bought a scanner and checked it. It was P0401 on the code. I deleted it and the light went off. Got it at pep boys for $25. I hope it will pass the smog check since the light is off.
@WorseThanChiggers
@WorseThanChiggers 7 лет назад
It will most likely fail the smog test right now and I will explain why. Right after clearing the codes with a scanner/code reader, you must put the car through several drive cycles. The number, type, and duration of drives cycles will vary and is hard to predict but plan on at least 3 of some distance over the course of several days just to be sure. The computer needs time to see enough sensor data to reset the readiness monitors in case it needs to throw codes and turn on the check engine light. If you go too soon to get your smog test, the testing station will see that not all of the readiness monitors have had time to reset and you will be turned away. Just understand that deleting the codes with a scanner does not eliminate the fault that caused the check engine light to come on in the first place. Your P0401 indicates that you have a malfunction with the EGR system which you will need to have remedied first.
@Purowalangkwenta

worsethanchiggers Thank you so much. I will do my smog next week. I might add some cleaning additives on the tank as well. Hopefully it will pass.
