Do they just eat young leaves or do they crawl up the stem and eat big leaves? They ate all my marigolds I had planted in the beds, which are coming back, now. The eggplant is getting big, and something is munching on the leaves, but I don't see slugs. They leave my tomato plants alone... just found some baby black bugs on one leaf and disposed of it, sprayed with neem/ peppermint oil, no returns. I did see grasshoppers and a squash beetle, though!

I thought my peas weren’t germinating but it turns out they were being eaten as soon as they popped through the soil.. I sewed a few more pea seeds today and have encircled them with crushed egg shells. I have a major slug problem and tried this with cucumber seedlings last summer. It worked well.

@juneshannon8074
@juneshannon8074 4 года назад
I AM ORGANIC GARDENING hi Mark. I have used crushed egg shells around seedlings and new tender plants in the past and it’s extremely effective. I have a slug problem because I have wood chips on my paths and the slugs love them. I was told that if the slugs cross the egg shells they become cut and die. I haven’t seen dead slugs but have seen nice new healthy seedlings.

In May when the plants are put in the ground, the plants are already fairly large, and this week the tomatoes are too large to remove the tomato cage, let alone something of that size. Definitely something to try when planting things out.
@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening 4 года назад
Yes, this is meant when the plants are very young only.
@NashvilleMonkey1000
@NashvilleMonkey1000 4 года назад
Exactly, and in mid July the tomato plants are giant, oh wait, is your area just now warming up? There are a lot of gardens in zone 3 that, but in those places they would keep them inside for a very long time, as the season in zone 3 would be way too short for a tropical plant.

When you have a chance search copper tape for slugs and you will fine lots on RU-vid that it does not help to keep slugs away. They go right over it. This is a good video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZFn9TT_rlXU.html

I use my 2 liter bottles for self wicking buckets, so using 3 per plant like this is not practical for me. I was thinking about trying beer bottle caps... Glue the smooth side to something cylindrical with the rough side out. Wondering if that would stop the little crawlers?

Same here. Slogs only attack the very bottom leaves of my toms sometimes. But when the peppers, onions and beans are around, they leave the toms and go for the peppers, onions and the beans. However, although they can really damage the bean plants, I find that come first weak of july, they seem to disappear and the beans and peppers recover pretty nicely. Onions seem to recover rather well too but peppers don't seem to recover as fast, although they do recover.
