You and me both. I'm just about to buy copper mesh hence visiting here. Good to know it will keep the buggers at bay. Great video. Watched a different one, but a guy placed a snail inside a square of tape. Someone pointed out to him that it's about a choice with snails. So when it didn't have a choice to escape outwards, it braved the copper. It's when they can avoid and have better places to venture they will avoid. 😅 who would have thought we'll be doing snail science! 🐌

If you have terracotta pots with a lip at the top, then put a band of Vaseline (1 inch wide ) around the lip and the slugs will not cross it. Take care when moving the pots during the season, as if one forgets the Vaseline is under the lip one can drop the pots. Expensive!

You can take a garden hose and cut so much you need to get around the raised beds, then cut along the hose and put it on the edge of the raised bed. Make sure the upper part of the tape is covered by the hose, that will hold the tape and make it water proof. Hugs from Sweden

I was researching effective ways to repel snails and stumbled upon the copper and beer trap method. Thank you for sharing this informative video!
@SCSlimBoiseID

1:11 The snail checks out its reflection, and then turns to the slug as asks: "Does this shell make me look fat?" 1:56 The slug sees itself in reflected in the copper tape and thinks, "OMG. Is THAT what I look like? Ewwww," and it turns away. I don't blame it. Okay, something else that works if you want to trap snails and slugs (maybe to use for fishing bait later?) is to bury a small tin can in the soil so that the lip of the can is level with the dirt, and then pour some beer into the can. Snails and slugs will be attracted to the odor of the beer and will fall into the can and drown. Either way, good idea to keep them from munching on your veggies.

I removed the bottom of some plastic flower pots and glues a stripe of copper tape around them. After I planted the young plants in the ground I made a little fence around them with a pot. Worked very well. You just have to remove the leaves that are hanging to the ground. In this way I can use them again next year. I think it would help if you slide over the copper with the peace of sandpaper once in a while. Greetings from germany 🙂

Used to use this on pressure treated wood on the underside of the top rail I mounted. This allowed my mom to sit on the side of the beds comfortably and it also let the tape be hidden and gravity would prevent anything from "arching over" it. It sticks well to dried pressure treated wood.

You could hire a tin smith or roofer and have him install thin copper sheet metal strips, they are thicker and last a long time, it will be costly but it's probably a one time investment. 0.5 mm copper sheet metal costs around 200€ per square meter, for a 10 m long 30 mm wide strip would cost around 60€ which will probably suffice for one raised bed.

Perhaps folding/turning out the bottom edge of the tape (stapled along the top) would present a working barrier to the snails, slugs, usw. Or.. stapling the 3cm tape along the top edge with edge sticking horizontally outward would hold back the critters.

Use copper mesh - you can staple or nail it on to wood. It’s wider and kind of creates a ‘skirt’. I use a band of copper tape and a ring of copper mesh around the top of my terracotta pots which have hostas in. I also use a little plug of mesh in the holes in the bottom of all my pots to stop them camping out in the crock.

What you do, is you get a thin piece of wood, and nail it as a little ledge at right angles on the top edge of your garden bed. It has to protrude a few inches. Thus protects the copper tape from the weather. -and use glue under the tape

You could get some PVC pipe and cut a section out of it so you can slide it over the top of your garden beds that will give you a plastic surface to stick your copper tape on. I like the idea of the electric fence, was thinking since it is the shock that removes them you should be able to use stainless steel wire instead, that way it will not oxidise.

I thought I was being clever and bared 10 ft of copper Coaxial cable and formed it into "bracelets" for my plants. The one left over I put on the ground and put a slug in it. I've seen enough tests in laboratory conditions of copper tape with literally thousands of slugs wander across them with impunity. There's no evidence this works. A lip or collar on the other hand does work. Also 9V is not a small shock, especially for a snail or slug. If the cannot pull away from it in time it will cause them to seize while touching both strands, then burst, and bubble, and boil away leaving goop everywhere. It's not pleasant to have to clean up. Use a lower voltage. You just need the stimuli, not enough to fry a snail.

You certainly have a point on the 9V. I used an spare accu of my Bosch drill machine. When testing (made a little test circuit) it on 3 snails that feasted on my sunflower prouts one bubbled like crazy after 3 tries to pass the barier then got Idle (the house snail). One got stuck on the wire and got fried leaving a blue mark of the copper reaction on the snail (smaller naked snail, RIP). One also got zapped couple of times and than leaved crawling over the isolated parts of the wire. (bigger naked snail). To be fair, i didn't have the guts to lay my tongue on this drill machine accu powered circuit, so I am gonna use just a 1,2V recharable battery on the bigger project. For now I reccomend a distance of 8 mm from the wires and put them in a way that the snails can fall of of it.

Would several strands of copper wire would work without battery? Also, I have heard that slugs and snails come to clean up the soil from excess iron. If that is true, then maybe we could use copper on the soil to remineralize copper.

You don't have to use copper wire, use same gauge but steel wire. Or galvanised steel wire. The copper without electric is just a reaction between slime and copper, which they can feel. The wire doesn't have to be copper if electrified

Hi Lilly! Thank you for showing this to us. My current plant containers are plastic, so maybe the tape would work for me. While you were showing us the copper tape on the wood, I was wondering if you could electrify the copper tape? Thank you for showing this to us.
@Universal_Craftsman
@Universal_Craftsman 10 месяцев назад
If you want to electrify it, you would need two strips which are insulated to each other, so you can connect the positive to one strip and the negative to the other, if you want to do this you better run multiple copper wires with a gap adjacent to each other, then connect the positiv and negativ pole alternately to the wires. If the snail closes the electric circuit by touching the two opposing poles a current will flow through the snail and probably k#ill it, if the current is large enough. I wouldn't do this at mains voltage since it's a safety concern, I would also not go over 50 volts AC or 120 volts DC since above those voltages it exists a major risk of serious electrocution which can k#ill people.

Two things: there is a product I just ordered from Amazon called Sluggo. Highly rated. Read about it there so you can make your decision about it. Also, I bought a blacklight flashlight from Amazon last year. If you go out to your garden at night and shine the blacklight on the stems of the plants, slugs and worms fluoresce - you can see them and pick them off before they cause too much damage. It works!!! I have to wear gloves because touching the worms and slugs is so gross! But it is effective. A tomato hornworm can decimate an entire tomato plant (and other plants) in one day. It is labor intensive, but worth it to save my vegetable plants. That is MY food, not theirs!

First and foremost, you have a silly dog, she made me giggle. Love it! Now, about those darned slugs. They are chewing up the base (stem) of my beautiful Foxgloves. I don't give a hoot about killing them environmentally, heck, I crush them with my fingers or a rock! I've worked too damned hard to care how they die...I just want them dead and gone.
