I'm surprised that better video of this show hasn't become available some 42 years later. Everybody has this bad quality video. What happened to the master tape? A good quality tape of this show would sell at least thousands of copies.
Fire and Water, Fire and Rain, Burnin Sky, Silver Blue and Gold, Fire't Up, Flow . . .A young Paul Rodgers exuding his soulful sexiness via voice and stage presence . . . All so naturally . . . enticing to watch . . .
There was a lot of talk of bringing opera technique into singing at the time that Dio was with Rainbow then Sabbath. Dio was the first concert I went to and Rodjers was the last in '97
Free with Paul Kossoff and Andy Fraser were up there with Purple and Zepplin as the best rock bands we've produced in the UK.I'm afraid this band without Koss and Andy is a pale imitation of the real thing.
Dio and Rodgers were both exalted vocalists! Dio had the more fitting metal vocals right enough but Rodgers was the right man in the right band. I don't enter into better. That's a simpletons' game. Simply put, 2 greats!!
a superb performance from rogers what a shame they didnt send for snuffy walden to fill in on the tour history and fate may have been different with free surviving longer
Yeah, classically trained musicians often gain an edge that way. Dio and Rodgers were good enough as naturally-gifted individuals. Heartbreaker and Mob Rules are prime evidence of that!!
Yeah Paul's voice is amazing, but I would mention Steve Marriott (of SMALL FACES !!! and Humble Pie) instead of Plant. And it's so hard for me to choose who's better because they had quite different styles of singing. Oh damn just love them both, fuck the comparison....
If this were my first intro to FREE,it would have been my last-thank God I saw the other video of them doing this song with the original band-now that was awesome!
@kossoff77 Exactly. This is a piece of history that I'm embarrased to say, I was unaware of. I have the album "heartbreaker" which had an asian musician on it. "Free at Last" is one of my favorite albums, and I have the understanding that Paul is on that one, or atleast I hope!
