You are the man! Most videos are posted without thinking most people are not mechanical. Luckily I am, but no Mr. Goodwrench! If some folks don't like that you take longer to explain your actions, then let them keep having problems. People are in too much of a hurry....stop & learn something folks! This man could save you a lot of money!!! My 06 F-150 was having similar issues. Your info was the cure to a very annoying problem. It gets very hot in South Texas!!! Maybe if I were in my 20's again I could handle not having working air in my truck. But I'm not, & I refuse to sweat while driving anymore. So my appreciation & respect shall be yours. You taught me something, & knowledge is power. Keep up the great teaching techniques. I don't care if your video took all day, in the end learning something that could keep me from being ripped off is priceless! Today was in the 90's here on Galveston Island. But the inside of my truck was super cool!!! Wish there were more honest people like you in this world.

It's pretty cool to see someone actually breaking down the information so that it's easier to "digest". As a former mechanic for Monro I can attest to the fact that AC jobs were quite costly, even the quick jobs they would charge around $400 or more. Only once working there did I see anyone pay less and that was $250 just to change an AC compressor. The one manager there made us set parts in the back room on an old oil drum to make it seem like someone was actually doing something to the part/parts we pulled off of their vehicle. Obviously I didn't last there.... you can't survive at that place for long and be an honest person too, guess that's why I only held that job for about 8 and a half months before management canned me. LMAO

I fully concur with the comments below; your 'long form' explanation was exactly what I need to take a closer look at the A/C system myself before I spend more money pumping new refrigerant into the system (though it may need some of that, too). Last time I took the car into a mechanic for the A/C they did a leak test, put some new refrigerant into the system, and that was as much as I wanted to spend because I could see where they were going with this. The clutch plate check is something that's simple to do and easy enough to at least clean the plates and remove a spacer to check the gap. I have a 20-year old Subaru Legacy station wagon which for the most part is still running nice and smooth and my current mechanic doesn't try and put any parts into it it doesn't need but he's not an A/C guy so it's best to be prepared before I ask for a recommendation to a shop other than his.

Holy shit, dude! My husband's car started with heat problems this passed Winter. Now it's with A/C this Summer. I have spent about 10-12 hours looking over all i could, changing all relays and fuses, in cabin filter, evaporator drain, heat resistor(winter), checking for leaks, etc..... EVERYTHING that wasn't replacing high-priced parts because when it works, it works great. Only about $100 in, but no improvement. Just watched your video and being that his car is a 2003, heat and ac only work at fast RPMs(sometimes), or for a second or 2 with a large bump, or on a turn, I suspect this is EXACTLY what's wrong. The magnet can't get and keep a good hold because it's too far away. So simple and makes SO MUCH sense. Worse case scenario, I replace the clutch plate. I can't wait to check it when he gets home. I'll definitely update tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks for sharing. A local mechanic said the same thing but he didn't explain how to do it. On older vehicles the clutch magnet gets weaker and adjusting the air gap will make the compressor clutch engage again. It is definitely cheaper than buying a new compressor.

Josh, that’s true IF and WHEN the compressor engages. In this case the compressor stopped engaging, so it doesn’t matter how much air is flowing across the condenser, there’s no refrigerant moving.

Haiti News Info Haiti News Info, no, I just removed the 5/16” or 3/8” center bolt and the front half of the clutch came off (after removing the plastic surrounding the radiator). Inside of the clutch housing I removed was a washer (spacer) I went to ace hardware and found a few thinner (but larger diameter) washers, took them home and drilled out the diameter a scotch, and made sure the diameter was the same or smaller than the original. It was also thinner, meaning the outer clutch would be slightly closer to the inner clutch allowing the magnet to pull it in when the vehicle called for AC.

A tip for holding the clutch plate while you loosen the hub bolt, you can turn on your ignition switch with a/c on , the clutch will hold the hub tightly while you remove the bolt. Most vehicles do not use shims to set the air gap, mostly Fords use shims. Others have to be pressed apart and back together. On those vehicles, you set the air gap by simply pressing the hub on and stop at .006" gap. You can often repair the air gap on a worn clutch by simply tightening the hub bolt until the proper air gap is reached. The industry standard air gap is .006". Great video for the beginner.

Thanks for the very practical tip. If you need a clutch kit, with the new parts you mentioned, they are less than $100, and you can usually do the job without removing the A/C hoses, i.e. while it is still in the vehicle, which means no vacuuming of the system or expensive recharging by a mechanic. You can buy a can of R134a refrigerant, with a meter gauge, for anywhere from $30 to $50, at a big box store, your local auto parts dealer or an online source. You can often borrow any necessary specialty tools from nationwide chain parts stores if you put down a refundable deposit, or you can buy inexpensive kits from online sources.

Great video. What I do is this: Many older cars with lots of miles on them have a similar problem. A PERMANENT fix is to take off the clutch plate and remove one of the little washers that creates the air gap. Either find a thinner washer or grind/file off some of the thickness. The air gap should never be more than 0.010". or half a mm. Use a feeler gauge. The clutch has just one bolt or nut right in the center for removal. DO NOT loose the washer when you lift off the clutch plate! It will fall on the ground and roll off if you are not careful. Use large channel lock pliers or oil filter wrench to hold the plate from spinning while you loosen the center bolt. It is not very tight, so DO NOT break it off when you assemble things again! I am not sure of the torque, maybe 10ft/lbs. NOT VERY TIGHT! Do not use an impact gun on it either. Also while you have the clutch plate removed, sand off the rust between the plate and magnet. Old cars always have lots of rust in there and this will cause the clutch to slip (and make a lot of noise). A wire wheel does a fine job of cleaning up these surfaces. DO NOT paint these surfaces. Just leave them bare metal.

Wasn't looking for this but decided to watch it anyway. Been wrenching for years but always can learn something new. Your explanation is way basic but is spot on. BTW A.C. clutch becomes an electromagnet once it's energized. Your feeler gauge method is called a go no go. Method, that's the best way to check clearances such as this or when doing a valve adjustment on say a Honda whatever. The compressor on your truck is perfectly accessible for a fix and for your vid. Your narration and explanation is perfect and interesting as well. You had my attention the entire time. Thanks.!!

Already working on my own shop, only thing is, tools aint cheap lol. Anyways very detailed vlog, keep it up my guy!!

A person that understands the fundamentals of a system and can structurally break down and explain its content will often times reap effective communication towards their recipients. That said, great job 👍🏾.

A few years ny ac on 2006 Ford five hundred wasn't cooling good, the ac shop quoted me $1500 to replace compressor. I researched it, ordered a scroll valve, had a mechanic draw down the system, install scroll valve and recharge, total cost inc part about $90. Thanks for the info on the clutch plate, I check that next time my ac isn't working great. Good video.

Thanks for your thorough explanation! I'm not a mechanic and appreciated your thoroughness. I had the same problems you had. Took it to a mechanic who said he used his "AC Testing Machine" and "re calibrated" my Freon levels and checked for leaks, but after a few days the same problems came back. The mechanic wanted to replace the compressor. Instead, I followed what you said and discovered two spacers missing and the clutch plate bolt super loose. Also, a bunch of grime. Hit it it with brake clean and tightened everything back up and "boom" everything's working great. Thanks for saving me a bunch of money!

Thank you so much! My 05 F150 would start cold, then blow hot air. Did what you showed, but couldn't get around shroud on top. Had to do from under the truck and no room for channel locks, so used a small C-clamp from the bottom. Had 1 shim inside and I took it out and cleaned up some rust on the plate. Works great! Would not have had a clue if I hadn't watched your video. Thanks again, it took an hour and cost me nothing!

Did you notice your truck idling erratically before you fixed the air gap? Mine cycles on and off and after a bit of driving it will die. The clutch plate never stays connected for more than a couple seconds and then it stops and cycles all over again. I’m going to go do everything you just did and I think I’ll be fixed. It makes the most sense. You’re the man!
@DansVlog

The clutch will engage and disengage like you are saying if the freon level is low as well. Make sure you top off the freon first before you waste your time

@@DansVlog Ok. I’m not used to working on vehicles that gave a/c , what is the best way to go about checking that box? Is there a way to check the level of Freon so I know how much to add ? I know you can buy it at the store but I also know you can over charge the a/c which isn’t good ? A point in the right direction and any advice Is much appreciated

The ac on my 97 F150 would not engage at all after it worked the previous summer. After some diagnosis, I found the face on my field was very rusty, typical in the Midwest, especially after a bad winter. I replaced the field and coil and replaced the pigtail, it looked suspect. After a recharge, I froze my ass off. I could not turn my ac on past 2nd setting and my truck was a Supercab. If you live in an area that gets snow and they salt the roads, check the clutch engagement before replacing the compressor.
