Ive been waiting just as long as all of you for this sadly he answered one of my comments about it like two three months ago and said he had tons of new parts and that videos will be up soon and now we December so i doubt he will finish it
@@deucenine4life813 ok.....how many bikes have you restored? I've done dozens. It needs a hell of a lot more than that lol. Have fun riding whatever disaster you build.
It's a lot more fun watching somebody else do it. Lol! That case splitter is a life saver. I bought one off of ebay and have done 3 or 4 cases with it, no problems.
Amazing how nice the transmission is...that'll save you some $$. No doubt, the crank seal on the flywheel side was sucking air/ leaking water when washed and ridden through water. That's too bad. But you've got a head start on good parts between the 2 engines!
😁👍👍👍 Interesting stuff Jason looking good. That rot spot JB weld it. No joke I used JB weld on a old ford fiesta cam bearing (area) with a gouge in it (aluminum) that was losing oil pressure JB welded it sanded it smooth and that went cross country baby. Needless to say that was a quick econo fix instead of buying a head and installing it. The owner was tickled to death.
sand the cover with some haavy grit sand paper and remake the area with j an be weld. Done it on many vw cases for water erosion and it works great and pretty permanent. totally savable. just make it clean anr rough before you apply it. after the j and b weld drys you shape it like bondo by sanding it.
I've repaired several engines in conditions like this, and just as others have mentioned, JB Weld does an excellent job at filling in craters like this. Clean and prep the area good, wire wheel it down and apply the JB Weld. Then after it's dried, use a dremel to shape it. If you feel a little more daring, you can try to aluminum braze it. It's aluminum brazing rod that's applied with a propane torch with MAPP gas. I'm sure you can find it at any home supply store or welding supply. Jost follow the instructions carefully and maybe watch a couple videos on how its done. Also, maybe practice on some scrap aluminum in the same condition. You can do it though, it's easy. Then you'll have to clean it up with a dremel or die grinder. If you mess up on it, don't sweat it, you were thinking of replacing it anyway, so this would be good practice. Good luck.
You can totally use that cover from the looks of it. It's not damaged on the gasket surface. Clean the flakes out and get down to good solid material. It's fine. You can use some JB weld to smooth out the surface if you want. More importantly, Change that water pump shaft bearing and shaft seal! 90% of the time they are bad and if not replaced you will end up with a milkshake in the transmission. That's probably why you have no drain plug in the one motor and white powder (dried out coolant and trans oil mix) coming out of the other motor.
Ive got a 88 cr125 like this im restoring with a buddy. Parts are sure hard to find. Them late 80s- mid 90s cr125s were rockets on the top end. Ive had a 96, a 03, and have got to ride my buddies 02 for the longest time. I swear the 88 was by far the fastest 125 ive riden.
It would be interesting to try to sleeve the water pump housing; either drilling a series of holes or cutting large holes at the water jacket locations into the sleeve before pressing it in. Sounds like its time to get Mustie1 involved!
thank you for saying hello , I didn't really know live steam educate & didn't really want to start a convo with a few people on CT's stream . Thank you for the kind words Charles . I hope things are better out there than here 👍
Looks good there and since you have it all apart there I'd put new seals and new bearings into it and I'd check into boring the cylinder head out and putting oversized piston and rings back into it as well too that way it'll be better than it ever was before for you too have a good day now and I'll be waiting on the next video from ya here too
Watch Goldguy RU-vid video he fixed a whole chunk off a case once !!! With JB weld or some kind of metal filler and carefully sanding it after it dries!!!
I would think you could have that rot cleaned out really good and have a good welder fill it in, then have it machined and it should be as good as new. The joy of working with metal is it can always be put back together, unlike wood. I'm sure you found a solution since I posted this comment. If not, look into what I suggested. I like your style and how you do things. Good luck and I'll keep following your progress.
The clutch cover is repairable. I would weld it and remachine it. Marinetex is ok. My last choice would be JB Weld. You can drill and tap Marinetex. I've replaced missing chunks of motorcycle engine cases. drilled and tapped new holes, filed it flat, installed a new gasket or RTVed it and was riding the next day.
JB Wield!!! Heat gun it first after you cleaned and reamed area then really press it in good detail when harden the the priest and witch doctor ceremony's Prestomagico Puff you have a Honda Motor!!!; )
Very interesting stuff. It's now been 28 years since the last time I rode a CR125. It was probably one close to that. Still feels like it was yesterday! I wana hear that one scream! Thanks from Portugal.
Dear 5150mx VW. 👍👌👏 99% of this video respectively work looks really very professional! It seems that you have done this in your racing (or was it Trial?) career already very often with success. Congrats! 👍👌👏 With one exception: You have a chisel. I already wondered why you used a screwdriver instead before and additionally pounded on its plastic handle with a metal hammer. Good that great little petrolhead Josh hasn't seen this. He would have rightly scold his beloved Dad. :-) ;-) Because it can be really dangerous. The handle can easily burst (nearly explode) and sharp splinters could fly all around and very easy hurt your hand etc.! So please take care of yourself. Thanks in advance. Thanks also for making teaching recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck health and wisdom.
HAHA ! it's all editing . I forgot why I used the screwdriver ? Was it to tap a rusted bolt though ? You will be happy to know it did explode😎. Best Regards to you CC , thank you for the tips
Dear@@5150mxVW Thanks for replying. Uhm... maybe you got me wrong or I got you wrong!? I wouldn't be happy at all if a plastic handle of a screwdriver burst in your hand. I tried to tell you to avoid such an accident. Did it really explode or are you kidding me? At least I hope so. Anyway: A very big "Thank you" for being one of the very rare species that can deal with constructive criticism (this was my third time doing this). Even more rare is your ability to implement those things immediately respectively very fast. All this without getting angry, stubborn, depressed or even defiant. Congrats, very impressive! My deep respect, Sir. Therefore, amongst other things, you are an excellent example/idol for your son (and for other people too of course). Sincerely yours.
@@Chr.U.Cas1622 No , I totally exploded the screwdriver . " happy to know " was kind of a joking way , figure of speech . I forget you are using a translator . I was just letting you know you are right . Constructive criticism is ALWAYS welcomed , I am learning . The more I learn , the more I can pass on to my Son as well . Thank you for all your excellent comments and support CC .
@@5150mxVW Ah, okay, now I see. Unfortunately I only had 5 years English in school and have not spoken or written it for 39... good grief... nearly 40 years*! So I have to use that incredibly crappy Google translator sometimes. Unfortunately constructive criticism isn't always welcome. You are definitely a refreshing exception. You already have a lot of wisdom. Thanks for your kind words. Postscriptum: * = Sigh, I'm definitely getting old = in 3 years and 12 days I will be 60yo... big sigh... and I definitely don't like that!
Use JB weld to repair that rot in the water pump. It will work amazing just make sure you make it smooth and like it used to be. JB weld is strong and will not fail. Fix the old one man.
@@dekon70 my only Netra event was Union in 1992 on a borrowed 1982 or 83 KDX250 . I will check the 2020 event schedule as i need to put the boots back on 👍
I used jbweld on one i built it was a 1985 cr125 take the shaft out and clean all the corrosion with a soft wire wheel wash thoroughly jbweld n sand it smooth, never had a issue
I get scared when i see a vertically split crank case and my Royal Enfield Bullet 500 ES is just such a case.It was making a noise like nuts and bolts inside a hub cap (old honeymoon car gag),i just hope the flywheels haven't come loose on the crank ($1500).I may start on it this spring (no garage).Still lovin' that big red impact driver..................
Working inside with no heat is a huge improvement over last years rolling around in the snow / driveway . Good luck with the project , sounds like a very cool motorcycle
Cool?I remember going to a 'bike store for leathers and the guy offered me some with knee sliders, i asked him to take a look at what i was riding and said "c'mon man, let's get real here."He said "oops, sorry."
J-b weld put on shape it let it dry grid it sand it to shape. They have used it on a Packard cracked cyl. Wall and it worked. You have nothing to loose good luck
Sir you can salvage that crank cover have ever tried jb weld it really works just a suggestion sir you still have the final decision but i have to say great video hope you finish this project all the best
Hey ran into that problem with my water pump housing we used Marine tex and never had an issue ever again stuff hardens so good you can even drill and tap it
Bummer on the clutch side cover. My '87 CR125 was worse and I did the JB weld, even had to machine a new intake nipple and epoxy it in place after boring the old one out in the bridgeport. I don't think that there are any aftermarket side covers for the '87 CR125. So even if you wanted to spent the $500 I'm not aware of anyone making them. Other models, yes, but not this one.
I don't know what your wall thickness is but you can tru it up and slave it . take it to a mechanic shop. it's aluminum shouldn't be a problem if there enough wall left
Ebay has all parts to restore your bike. I had the 85 250R, and two sore points on it was the alternator was toast and clutch cover, they were made of magnesium. Riders back in the 80s didnt use distilled water mixed with coolant even though the cycle mags warned the to do it. I got my beast to run and it did wheelies and screamed like a banshee. The pj carb was the easiest to work on back then, its on my 89 250R and it runs like a top. Good bike, if you restore it correctly, they can run up to $4000 grand on the market, the market for mid life crisis folks who love vintage dirt bikes. Ufo has your plastics, Pit Replica has your correct seat cover, Ebay has all of the hardware. Good luck!
I'm new to your videos, but I know you're typically a VW guy. The simple answer to my question may be that you simply don't have the tool, but why don't you use an engine holder? The engine is tumbling around and you're chasing after it. I think you'd find it helpful, especially when using that expensive motion pro case splitter or the dremel. Just my $.02. I gave it a thumbs up
Hi , I do not have a stand , however with a motor this weathered and seized I probably wouldn't of used it . The edit cut the time down considerably , the crank was really seized in the bearing . I was also rolling it around and looking at the camera LCD to find a good angle for the viewers ...I have been buying more Mx tools and the stand is on the list . Advice , Tips and 2 CENTS are always welcomed and appreciated👍, thank you ....and no I'm an Mx'r 1st , but Vw's are on the podium though ...3rd
Making progress there bro but do you remember how it all goes back together once you have the parts you need. I think I would rather tackle a small block chev than one of those full small of bits motors. Anyway all the best
Are you still continuing the cr125 restoration i just spent the last couple hrs watching and I searched through your page and havent seen anything for 8 months im about to watch your rm vidoes i hope the cr125 will make a come back soon would love to finish watching what you do to it
Hi , yes , i realized 2 weeks ago it was since Feb , that's crazy . I have a ton of $ spent on parts so that thing better go back together :). Thank you
Great im gonna have to subscribe now for sure and turn my notifications on cant wait and i hope u start doing more bikes more often i enjoy watching your and your kid restore bikes from scratch i was just showing my uncle that hip trick you did in the video he has the same bike but 89 but same model and it took three of us just to get new foot boots on (haha)
keep the vids coming man, always looking forward to next episode. Are you planing on cerakoting any of the motor, would be cool to see this old girl looking like a museum piece.
Thank you for the kind words Tieran I appreciate it . I don't think I will be on this bike but you never know . It's cool learning new things and working on these bikes allows you to do that . I might pick up a tig welder and try and repair the clutch cover .
New to the channel.... but this bike was on letgo in east Hampton... .. When I saw the video.. I was amazed. Good luck! Cant wait too see when its done.
I ACQUIRED THIS BIKE IN 2005 IN FLORIDA , IT WAS NEVER ON LET GO . It has been leaning on my garage for 10 years . It was seen on my garage in a Mustie1 video when he picked up a Karmann Ghia from me 2 years ago . Thank you Paul
@@5150mxVW I was reading my message to you. Voice recognition doesn't work all the time. Anyways I've use J-B Weld. A lots of times and it seems the holdup. Where's the little guy at? You have a great weekend too there still another day left.
You should try buffing the coroded metal with a dremel and some polish an a small buffing tool, could also try brass tools, that's what we use to work on chrome dies at work, dunno how soft the case is, aluminium right? Could also try attack it chemically with acid, but you'd wanna get something that wouldn't mess that rubber in the middle up, (or take it out) or effect the base metal, dunno if that's possible.
98 cr 250 I kinda got fuck on it but it got lot of nice parts I make a video and upload it to my RU-vid today I paid 1000 for but it beat it was crashed really bad
