One of the most underrated voices of all times. Nothing makes me feel like Paul Rogers with Free/Bad Company whatever. His writing is magical and that voice.
The live sound recording is from the John Peel radio show. I used to record lots of live stuff onto reel to reel tapes back then and listened to this one, along with many other Free songs from that programme, hundreds of times. And to prove how most, if not all, bands played live in the Peel studio in those days, I remember how Peel was caught out at the end of this particular song when the mike was switched back to him and Paul Rodgers could be heard in the background saying, ‘Do you want us to do it again?’ and Peel, snorting with a mouthful of food, replying, ‘No, you don’t need to do it again - sorry everyone, I’m just eating a piece of cake!’
I used to love all the mainstream classic rock then i started getting into all the old hiphop.. it was way better then any music today.. now that I'm finding way better bands then are everywhere on your classic rock stations I'm back on the dark side of the moon
to the 13 year old who liked this. Fear not, there are some great bands out there still keeping up the raw rock and roll and blues spirit. Try and catch the Black Keys live, awesome band, young guys with real blues feel. Saw free back in 69, first band I ever saw live and tried to get to see them as much as poss after that. Lots of really good live bands around at that time. Mott the hoople, Yes, Jethro tull, 10 years after, Curved air, Pink Floyd, Groundhogs, Taste (Rory Gallagher) etc.
This is the live version of the song...found on either the single 'Alright Now' as a b-side or on the remastered version of 'Tons of Sobs', where both versions can be found.
Funny how music maps your life and history will tell you where you was with the sound of your youth. Fankfook I was around when Free and all the other Historical bands was out. Just love Paul Rogers voice and all the tracks he has done.
my god..I was scared/excited that there was footage of them playing this song ha Anyways, thanks for not only posting this video, but putting music to it! Just a few days ago I was thinking that would have been great if they had at least given the option on the DVD to hear music during this silent footage. I mean it's so frustrating to watch, but I am grateful to have it, of course! :) Thanks!! :D
Oh Thank you Frozen fish. Ive seen a few videos of free. But never seen this one. Just guitars/Drums and Valve amps no Effects No Crap. As Music should be
Timnol - I've just noticed your question. This is a year late but here goes (Free songs on comps) - You can all join was 'I'm a mover' - Nice enough to eat was 'Woman' - Bumpers was ' Oh I wept' and El pea was 'The Highway song'. One song off each of their four studio albums (before the breakup). To be honest I think Island made a great choice of track every time!
I'm also 54! You can all join in is also hiding away in my celler somewhere! Wasn't Fairport Conventions "Meet on the ledge" on that one? Great song for me at least. I've just re-discovered Taste and RG, after many years of not hearing that music, along with Gentle Giant, Jody Grind(inner British college/Uni. progressive band with Tim Hinkley, and High Tide, likewise known for their live concerts but not outside of G.B.. I could ramble on for ever.......
Just tried to work out which songs they're playing and I think I'm right (sad, aren't I?) In the first part they're playing Ride on pony - you can tell by Kirke's drumming on the 'Because you see' bit. In the second part (when the film gets darker) I think Koss is doing the solo to Mr Big and it finishes with Kirke doing his famous end to this song.
@lucidlupin I have had a few pints @ the Castle thanks to some mates from SW London. Me I was a young G.I. who was a few years too late to see Free and I won't go into what was playing there in the late70's. Some fine memories from the whole Tooting-Bec area. Is the Castle still in business?
@MCconcon i like your comment very nice too see rock will never die rock on man hope you grow up to be a wise man (listen to wise music you become a wise man ).
Where is the original audio to all these clips? they look GREAT but the tunes are the studio versions/bbc versions? so where is original anybody know? i crave it ;)
@unlikeanyotherhuman Hi, may I applaud your reference to the correct spelling of the word arse. The Americanisation of the word to ass ! has always perplexed my sense of reason . For as we all know an ass is a "creature of low degree" , human or equus. Toronto a most enjoyable city, have only visited the once but I hope to go again someday. Rock on brother.
I think this is from 1970 purely because Simon Kirke is playing a Hayman drum kit, I think he used his Ludwig kit well into 1970 before changing to Hayman which was the new loud english drum of the time.
I wonder if they would have the reputation today if they didn't have the greatest voice in the history of rock music belting out the lyrics, Kossoff might be in the same place as Stan Webb of Chickenshack, a footnote in rock history. Not hating, because I love songs like Be My Friend, Fire and Water and The Stealer but they wouldn't be what they are without Paul Rogers majestic vocals.
At least try to sync guitar video and sound. Plus there's much better footage of Free live available on the web. I notice someone remembered Kossof - nice !
@MCconcon I really don't care about you age !!!!!!!!!!! I really don't care if you are the finest and coolest and smart Kid ever !!!!!!!!! Teeneagers are a pain in the ass!Their comments are full of the that kind of crap " I'm a Fetus and I doin't like Lady Gaga ". Jesus !
Grat song, awful recording... The audio doesn't match to the visuals at all. Neither the guitarist, nor the drummer are shown at the right point in time. Edit: Just checked with a friend. The visuals seem to be from Mr. Big.
This looks like destroyer (band in 84 i was main guitarist local celebrity , Long hair was not excepted at the time neither was covering black Sabbath or iron exon , underground jack Mtv brainwashed people Our parties were better , sucked was playing in front of people like you' who see band think Michael Jackson 5 story staring oslyn bros I cant spell) not osmond
Check that opening line = i was...& i DO! But all that B/S about not lovin' anyone blah blah etc yawn YAWN is just outdated typical rock star sentiment immaturity...(sorry! Just callin' it as i c it!) :) ...but hey it's Alright Now, Baby...! (= All is Forgiven 4 having written 1 of the best rock songs Ever!!!)
