RIP the two members of Free Paul Kossoff (September 14, 1950 - March 19, 1976), aged 25 Andy Fraser (July 3, 1952 - March 16, 2015), aged 62 You both will be remembered as legends.
Fraser putting on a clinic here. He serves the song and gives it a muscular rhythm, lays down a solid base for Kossoff to solo over, then unleashes the Jack Bruce- John Entwistle, type chops when it’s his turn to shine. And he’s like 18 here. Any aspiring bassist should see this video!
I've listened to this dozens (or maybe hundreds!) of times since 1970, and I still am amazed at the raw intensity, simplicity and pure brilliance of this band. I've never heard anything like it, and probably never will.
It's gotten to the point where anyone that gets inducted gets slammed by some washed-up attention whore like Nugent. Also, it's a way for the musuem to get funded by getting a free gig to sell.
They were kids! I don't think any kid musician today can play with maturity like this. Free were absolutely one of the best bands of that era. INCREDIBLE !!!
That is a very studio sound but great to hear. Thanks for the upload. I'm half-way through listening and awaiting Koss do his bit. Then I well Rodgers is letting go now Love you love you love yo Ma long term love in the world, Let me hold tight, Baby baby abbacy Whey comes Koss, Shit hit that note! Ye really ripping yet under control, those riffs again and rolling again yes, [but not as mature as his Back Street band where he does amazing stuff such as Train Song.]
You can't even give these modern manufactured mannequins the name "Bands." They can't play an instrument and everything they do is scripted for them by their capitalist puppet-masters. All Art & Culture has degenerated to the point of putrefaction in the last 50 years with only bands like Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Kings of Leon, The Eagles and The Killers resisting the downward descent.@@anniebeeee
I don't have enough thumbs... Andy Fraser was an unheralded master of the electric bass. I was lucky enough to see this band in their prime, yet I can never get enough of these TV spots. Thank you for posting this.
Like the phases of great artists in other times and other media ... painters, composers, sculptors. They often inspired and challenged each other to explore and excel.
Patriotic Hooligan Those are excellent bands, and I enjoy Warren Haynes in any environment. But in a crowded field, listening 50 years later, a case can be made that Free set the bar for performing virtuoso , utterly unpretentious hard rock. This 1970 example is so authentic, so honest, that it seems “unplugged” or “unprocessed” in comparison to contemporary broadcast production standards. Catch their 1970 debut festival performance at the Isle of Wight. For a fleeting moment, 4 very young, extremely gifted musicians mind-melded into a whole greater than the sum of its parts.
Kossof was a white Jimi Hendrix❤️ Listen to those beautiful bass lines too, the drums & bluesy rock vocals. Still one of my favourite bands of all time❤️ An incredibly talented group of musicians.
@@seancoleman7737 Heart Attack at his home in California 2015. He was only 62. Couldn't find any Scottish connections with the name Frazier. 62 No age at all, Dearie Me.
First heard this while at grammar school aged about 15/16, I'm now 66 and this track is so special all the components firing in Harmony, just beautiful. I've listened to all sorts of music since, but this still rates amongst the best. What a band.
@@chicotheblue But it still happens on occasion. Do you see people these days like Greta Van Fleet or Billie Eilish and her brother. There are still crazy teenagers riding and playing grown up music.
Andy had the perfect balance between playing simple grooves that serve the song and playing more intricate melodic runs every now and then, to spice things up. A true master of his craft. RIP.
Great drummer great bassist great guitarist great singer great chemistry 4 great talents playing as one you will not witness this kind of band again just beautiful.
Oh Melba I was 12 when they were getting well known and I still think they can't be beaten I hope you have researched the rest of their playlist as I know you won't be disappointed!!
@@melbae.1124 try 'be my friend ' and 'oh sunny day's but they were really popular with 'all right now' ... let me know how you get on! Happy listening! Andrewxxx
These kids....they were kids at the time...at any rate, these kids knew how to work together without stepping all over each other creating a complete sound/song. Solid work! Incredibly impressive too!
Couldn't agree more. It's easy to listen to just one of them for the whole song and just as easy to listen to the song as the 4 of them playing together as a band. Something magical and rare going on here for sure.
The raw energy and insane talent on display here is astonishing! And what makes it so incredibly special is that all four of them are so damn young in this clip. I don’t believe the majority of the audience realised the quality they were witnessing!
It's always like that, you never realize until years later. I was in my prime for 80s and 90s. Saw Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, RHCP, Janes Addiction among many others in small venues and was thrilled to watch their mounting success. But at the time it was just another Saturday night and another new band.
Soulful in the extreme. Nothing fake or plastic about either the music or the performance here. Incredible stuff. A time when music was played by real musicians on real instruments and playing from the heart.
Seriously insane that Paul Kossoff could just stand literally RIGHT IN FRONT of those cranked Marshall amps and an Orange as well. Especially considering the fact that I can't even be IN THE ROOM with my AC30 without thinking I'm gonna go deaf! Dude was amazing!
They were so right for that moment in time. The fact that they were never “superstars” made them the dark horse, the underdog, and even more appealing to those of us that wanted a band that was “ours”, and not for everyone. Amazing bass, guitar, and Paul Rodgers-the best rock vocalist .
Kossoff never played the same thing twice, if you hear different versions of any song there are similarities but never the same and that for me says everything. pure feel and ability. the countless players kossoff inspired and still to this day a massive inspiration .....
the audience is so calm during the whole performance and yet FREE kept the energy going as if they were in a zone, Bad ass !! that was rock and roll !!
Hi I just wanted to thank you again for being so supportive and following me on my journey. I love inspiring and encouraging others. People like you help me to keep showing up! Hope you are having an amazing day❤
Most of Free's songs were really slow, something I didnt realise when i was listening to them in the 70s. They gave the music time to breathe. Paul Kossoff didn't need to play 500 notes a minute to impress the listener. He just played the right notes at the right time. Absolutely brilliant. He died far too young.

Damn..I don't care what anyone says, they were the greatest teenage band in the entire 65 year history of rock. No band will ever match them in the sheer talent and soulfulness they had for such young men.
Koss. The young man's soul poured out through his fingers. Free was the perfect band. All members the best at their specialty. Young, but confident enough to let their music have space and breathe. We'll never see a band this good again.
He has this incredibly crisp, sharp snare drum strike, unlike anyone else. It’s like his sticks are made out of titanium. And his sense of timing is perfection. Perfect for Bad Co.’s power grooves.
We’ll never hear the likes of this again… Andy Fraser right in the pocket, Koss utterly superb no FX pedals just straight into the amp… and Simon and Paul .. ha no words just beautiful
So glad I found this clip. I remember watching it about 15 years ago for the first time and it gave me goosebumps. Four very talented, very young musicians in complete sync here.
These were my favourite Band. To see them live was a mindblowing experience. We saw them as often as possible in the UK back in the day and I was entranced with Paul Kossoffs playing, but all four of them were very special together.
What a bsnd - I've love this bsnd since the early 70's. Four great virtuoso's who grew together but couldn't stay together. Andy Frazier so soulful and funky. Enjoy!!
Oh My Word! Unbe*******lievable! I can’t remember how many times I’ve listened to that track and it is still the best live anything that I’ve heard. And then you have the live version of Be My Friend which is a great ballad…this band could do everything…Guardians of the Universe.
Unbelievable performance, one of those Liver performances which will remain the best there was in history. Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke are true legends of Rock. Have to acknowledge the amazing solo performance of Paul Kossof on lead and the cool bass from Andy Fraser. What a performance. It is one of those tracks you keep returning to listening. Amazing !!!
Great saw them about 4 times live before the IOW festival. Maybe a few metres away from Free in full flight was a great experience and one that is a distant but wonderful echo going around in my brain. Great band.
What The Fuck have I Been Missing all these Years?! This is absolute musical ecstasy right Here!!!! Andy Fraser laying down a groove for the ages and Kossoff just flyin' on that '59 Les Paul. What an amazing band is all I can say after seeing this. Mind is officially Blown!
This song is so amazing..I like it more than their biggest hit: Allright Now. Just outstanding in every way imaginable..from every band member!! RIP Paul & Andy...
Never get tired of listening to this. It only gets stronger . What a band and unbelievable chemistry between them. Probably the most memorable performance ever in Rock history
PQP... Que vibrato poderoso que o Kossof toca... incrível o fato do que é tirar som de verdade da guitarra.... cada minuto dessa música é um momento precioso de perfeição.
1970 was when I went to see them perform live at our local Jazz Club, and the guys were dressed just like they were in the video...that has just brought back some cool memories for me...but what a great band they were
Absolute genius, perfection! I first heard this on BBC's John Peel radio show in the 70's, I stopped me in my tracks, amazing band, I've loved them from that day on, I've championed them from that day on, personally promoting them to many Blues and Rock Music aficionados, obviously to those who'd never heard of 'Free'. I have opened many ears over the years, Free without a doubt are one of the finest bands of all time and I was blessed to have seen them live, a treasured memory indeed! Mr Big, one of their finest hours! ❤️
Always my go to band. They just dont get any better than Free. The combination is magical and made in heaven. I count myself very fortunate to have been growing up in London in the late 60's and early 70's and seeing Free on a number of occasions. Be my friend has to be one of the best songs ever recorded and Morning, Morning will play at my leaving...

One of the best bands ever!! How on earth R they not yet in the R&R HofF ??!! So sad we lost Andy Frazier & Paul Kossoff..RIP. So glad they went on 2 form Bad Company..but I miss Free alot..
6/27_2021 Hey @Jospin van raat A. Fraser's playing (& his Gibson bass) are somewhat reminiscent of Jack Bruce' style. I'll bet he listened a lot to the Fresh Cream LP.
@@ludannelasyvyus1824 yes the influence is there ....but it doesn´t sound a copy cat or a rip off .....just an influence and then doing his thing ... a difficult song to play cause it never rushes ..... brillant
Many of these great 70's bands with only a record or two available unfortunately. If they would only knew people listening their music 50 years later. check out Sweet Smoke... if you dig..
Heard them 52yrs ago & i hear Them today and they are still the goddamn best band that ever got together & produced music that would make angels weep Make demons fall to their knees in ecstasy Hold back the tides These guys here were 17yr old Andy on base & ive never yet seen a bass player with a whole body rhythm like Andy had. 18yr old Kossoff on guitar Even Eric Clapton wanted to know how Paul managed to make his guitar sustain that agonised tremor 18yr old Simon on drums who makes it seem hes riding the surf & making it produce sound 19yr Paul Rodgers with tonsils like rusty barbed wire but makes his voice sound like silk being shredded as it leaves his throat NO ONE can make sounds like these young brilliant musicians could do! What 17yrs 18yrs 18yrs & 19yr old guys can put an outfit like Like FREE could Just listen to that combined sound!!! Its unreal. Hope youre rockin the Angelic realm, Kossoff & Frazer Youre legends guys 🇬🇧👧
