Free Kick Richmond | 2017 AFL Grand Final 

I thought at the time watching it live the Crows were getting robbed and then I watched the replay and thought oh it wasn't as bad as i thought because we'd lost and the care factor was nil but watching this I really hope the AFL did a scathing review of this game, particularly the Eddie Betts hold, even a blind man could see that

This should inspire anyone who doesn't know the rules of the game to become an umpire.

I don’t go for Richmond or Adelaide but when I was watching the game u could definitely tell that they were being favoured massively. All the Victorian teams usually get favoured Over SA QLD and WA teams because 90% of the umpires come from victoria

The official rule is 15 strides before a bounce, so that was legal, but I agree with most of the other errors you picked up on

I think this is a result of having grand finals played at the MCG, umpires seem to favour the home team cos of crowds, we saw an awful display in 2016 with the Dogs over the Swans and still less-than-impressive calls here, yet I think they were less obvious and definitely less dangerous

I love the Crows but they didn't show up on GF day. Full stop. When you start getting first to the ball, and start to win contested possessions , these type of calls start going your way.

this is gonna be a major controversial comment but i strongly believe adelaide shouldve won that grand final, its 4 years past it but the comments section is here so.......its not about having a fair amount of free kicks etc, its about who actually plays by the rules. The tigers definitely didnt play by the rules that day. Sure, adelaide didnt play perfectly either but richmond were heavily favoured. To the people saying the umpire cant see everything, why do they have like 20 cameras then? so they can review things, but some of these fouls were so blatantly obvious the umpire should have been competent enough to call them out but he never did which shouldve lost him his job. Crows should have gotten the win fair and square, yes the tigers did play more aggressively but they also got away with a loooooooot more than what the crows did. Im quite disapointed in the lack of competency from the umpires these days, cant even call a foul and theyre supposed to be umpiring the game and then crows gets trashed talk because of how 'badly' they played, do yas think thats fair? how about we trash talk the tigers for how much they cheated in the 2017 GF? Some players didnt play their best that day sure, but at least give some acknowledgement that this match was just an umpires failure to comply with the rules of AFL which lead to incompetently umpiring the game . If the umpires did their job properly this video wouldnt exist.

The betts hold is just ridiculous and it’s shit like that which changes the momentum of a match, I myself don’t agree with all of these but some of them are bloody obvious. I also understand that these free kicks don’t justify losing by 8 goals.

0:59 I mean I’ve been caught several times doing this so it’s a pretty questionable call. But a lot of these are shocking to see!

It's always good when free kicks go your way. For many years free kicks never went the way of the tigers

I think a lot of the non-paid frees you can look at and say they don't tend to pay them in the grand final, the trouble was all the same kind of infringements were paid against Adelaide. Things like Lever for a jumper hold, Otten for 2 jumper holds, yet Martin's crucial mark and goal against Brown was from a big jumper tug (one angle shows the jumper balloon). When the Crows lifted the intensity or the defenders pushed the boundaries the umps came down hard. I've never seen so many players so often with their arms out stretched at the umpires pleading / querying what was going on. And to think during the finals I thought to myself if Adelaide can't win I wouldn't mind Richmond getting up, I felt sorry for the supporters who have suffered for so long. And like most people I kind of felt bad that Cotchin had to miss the GF for a soft incident, but like 95% of the "experts" I recognised that based on the evidence and previous bad record there was no way he could get out of it. Instead Adelaide lost 2 key players to injury, the AFL turned a blind eye so Cotchin could play, Richmond even got to play Geelong's home final at the MCG to have even made it this far, and of course Adelaide had to travel days early to get paraded through the streets of Melb (what does that do for your preparation) before playing the GF on Richmond's home ground, then the umps kept them in the game in the first half. I understand Richmond fans will see all this as sour grapes and insulting to their win but maybe they should just quietly acknowledge that after years of torment they had a hell of a lot go right for them and Adelaide, that has had a harrowing time for the last few years, somehow they have to start again knowing that they basically did everything right but the odds were quite unfairly stacked against them. Hard to face shelling out for another membership knowing that the trend is now well and truly in play... last 5 premierships won by Vic teams defeating non-Vic teams, despite 4 of those 5 non-Vic teams being ranked higher. The chances of that happening by chance rather some kind of bias in the system are very very small. And anyone that thinks the final margin invalidates the umpiring argument is either not being honest or doesn't know footy and understand what momentum does, especially in the finally balanced elite level of AFL.

If u look at the free kicks on the game it was 19 to 24 not that big difference

The thing is you slow it down, replay it 3 times and show close ups of it! The umpires don't have the same view of the broadcasting, they don't get to slow it down, they don't get a replay and they are under as much pressure as the players out there!!! And after all of that, most of the calls weren't wrong anyway???

That non advantage against the crows should've meant the end of AFL umpiring for that umpire.

Mate they got absolutely DREDGED it wouldn't have matter if Adelaide won an extra 10 frees Richmond were just simply phenomenal hence why they've won 2 flags and a minor premiership in 3 years. Best team in the league for the past 3 and they do it all by consistently losing the possession count and if you add up the times Richmond get frees they've been almost last in the past 4 seasons for free kicks. Its one of the GFs i missed and have never sat down and watched a replay as i dont follow either side,but I was miffed Adelaide lost especially after getting away to a great start and watching this explains why,didnt see the final free kick tally,but im guessing it was lopsided against the crows especially after the first quarter and sometimes that doesnt matter as its where they get paid and the one with eddy betts being dragged down would have put the crows within a goal.Also if the tigers went and got a goal str8 after that it would have been a 12 point turnaround and been a hit to the crows moral.Its funny also that the bullies and the tigers werent as good in the following year as well,but as an eagles supporter I'll have to see how they go as well this year

Stop being all protective to Adelaide. Tigers won easily. So stop trying to take the moment from Richmond they really deserved it. Just because hawthorn didn’t win the final doesn’t mean you get all salty

Did you want to make one from the other perspective? A more interesting video would be to pick out 'incorrect' decisions given against both teams, and then tally them up to prove that there was any sort of advantage either way.

The decision not to give Betts a kick was clearly wrong. A lot of decisions here that went Richmond's way. The umps are affected by the crowd. Absolutely no doubt about it.

some of these are really bad by the umps but you cant expect them to be 100% every time as we have a better view by the cameras and they are running and most of the time has a bad view

Unfortunately, it is impossible for the umpires not to make bias decisions when a home crowd is so loud and imposing. They wouldn't do it on purpose but it happens subconsciously. Its why the west coast get a lot of good umpiring decisions in Perth... also these umpires lack sufficient training for these situations as they arnt even paid full time. The only true way to fix this would be playing at a nutral grounds. But money and the spectacle has clearly been given higher priority. So i guess all you can do is enjoy it for what it is.

Stopped following the game for a while now. And it's the best thing. AFL is all about suiting the agenda . Hawks Collingwood, Richmond, Geelong WC and Bulldogs have all had sweet gigs.

Richmond won fair and square, however this game should've come down to 2 or 3 goals not 8. If the umps had been 'fair' then the crows would have still had some momentum. Adelaide did play really poorly in the second half and Richmond got on top when it counted. 3 or 4 goals were stolen from Adelaide and 2 or 3 goals were given to Richmond. However in the end Richmond were the better side.

4:37 not only is this not holding the ball, from my understanding when a player gives the ball, like Atkins did, and then goes to get the handball back, and is held, it is a free kick and 50m. Can recall Rioli himself getting a free for this only a couple of weeks earlier.

Maybe next year they'll come up with a new rule, give Richmond 90% of the free kicks per game, and whenever you get tackled, even when you just received the ball, then it's automatically holding the ball, the rule doesn't apply if it's high or in the back, unless you are a Richmond player, all your free kicks will be advantage.
