I luv luv luv you. Don't worry - - I'm 74 yo. You are safe and I'm married! You have helped me so much. Thank you for the wonderful tutorials. You and Jenny Doan are absolutely angels...
I love this series, but particularly this one. I am doing my best to work up to Free Motion quilting and these tutorials have helped and given me the courage to attempt new things!
Rob, I want to thank you for your teaching skills. You have a way of breaking down the task and making it easier to understand. I've been machine quilting for some time and you continue to give me, "lightbulb" moments. Great job!
I really appreciate your tutorials, all of them. You do make it look easy. But you also allow us to see the less than perfect areas. I tend to be a perfectionist and get so stressed out when my machine quilting isn't perfect. I know you have to practice a lot to develop the eye-hand coordination necessary for free motion quilting. That is part of my problem. But your tutorials are probably some of the most meaningful for me. Thanks for a great job and being such an awesome instructor.
You are brave to do feathers on your quilt while filming! I make all my greatest mistakes when my family members walk by and look over my shoulder! Thanks Rob for your radical approach to FMQ'ing! Party on Wayne!
I have no questions right now, but wanted to say thank you! Your energy, and positivity in your videos is very inspiring for me. Your pace is just perfect too! Please, keep up the great work!
I had such a hard time at first but if you give it time you can master it. I'm glad I didn't give up. Also, do not be critical of your work, it's yours and on,y yours..love all of your videos.
I have a baby quilt sitting here that I must finish by a certain date but am scared to death to even try straight line quilting let alone feathers! You make it look so easy and I love your attitude of "no big deal" if it's not perfect. I am so afraid of ruining my little quilt, especially because it is a gift. I think I'm going to tackle it today after watching you.
Your skills always amaze me, i seriously need to focus more and insist 'til i start mastering the natural of these free movements. Watching you working is inspiring. Many thanks :)
Big whammy stitch! hahahaha! Oh I am SO familiar with those. This is great ~ thanks Rob. Your real-life quilting helps more than you will ever know. I'm hoping one day you will find the time (ha!) to have an occasional Can This Project Be Saved feature to show us how to fix or cover those big whammies.
Great tutorial! Just so happens that I'm making a panel quilt, and quilted the center panel with spirals. So, feather #2 with the spiral motifs will decorate the border. Thank you!
Rob, I just loved seeing your tutorial on feathers ! They look so fantastic and easy too. Feathers are a real fav of mine so intend to try your technique very soon. Thanks !!
I just discovered your tutorials. Love them all! Watching you free motion & following the download designs have helped me as a beginner tremendously. Than you!
NIce Job! Good to see I'm not the only one who's feathers look not perfect. However I do agree with you gives it I made IT! look not bought in a store..I'm enjoying your FMQ tutorials Thank You :)
+suha Khaled well that's how I started and how I continually practice away from a machine, I draw motifs over and over! Eventually making that motion is a natural occurrence!
First time viewing. I really like your free motion videos. New type of sewing for me. You make it look easy. Now I will give it a try. Man Sewing is cool.
+Thomas Orndorff Thank you so much! We really appreciate the nice comment. Glad that you found our tutorials! Be sure to subscribe to our channel and our newsletter as well!
Actually, my wife Ann is the sewer who has been using my RU-vid account. She has been sewing since she was 13 and is always looking to learn more about new techniques that help her extend her love of the art. If she likes what you are doing, then you must be good. It was easy for her to begin exploring the vast world of RU-vid video by just starting from my site. I guess I need to get her set up with her own account now that she is hooked on the fun of exploring RU-vid. Tom Orndorff
Rob--Do you have any video for different feet. Have a question--Why are you using a regular foot--Why not a walking foot. I use the walking foot all the time--Buy 2 or 3 a year. Ann
I know it has been a year, but I thought I would give you an answer just in case you haven't found out from somewhere else. He isn't using a walking foot because it won't allow him to move the quilt in all directions with ease. He is using a free motion foot or a darning foot... They both work very well for this. If you go to sewingpartsonline.com you can actually type your machine model number into the search field and it will bring up.all sorts of things that fit your machine specifically. I hope this helps you out... Or anyone else that happens to come by this reply.
Really like your approach to feathers. Been following some other feather profis on RU-vid.Your's seem alot easier. Can't wait to get started practicing.
YAY! I am a beginner quilter, love the lessons, love the enthusiasm, love that mistakes are just part of the "art" of the quilt. My questions have more to do with your machine, BL JANE. What tensions (upper/lower) do you use, needle size, thread weight? Isn't there a pressure presser foot adjustment as well? Rob you are a wonderful teacher. Thank you for showing up! Sincerely, Lee Marx
The "Compass Quick Tips" is no longer available via this link. I just did a search on RU-vid and found it easily. I am really learning so much and greatly appreciate your videos. Thank you!
Another winnner! You always make it look so easy and your explanations make it real. Love your work. I'm just curious - you did feathers that both touched and did not touch the spine. Is one better than the other, or is it simply preference at the time? I'd love to see more of your feather variations. Thanks for the practice sheets - those will be very helpful! Hoping to conquer my fear of feathers...
Nice feathers. I have a major problem with mirror designs like that. I'm definitely more comfortable one side than the other. The worksheets don't seem to be linked?
i love watching your videos and i got to see you in Portland Oregon this year. i was very excited. my question is have you done border corn feather design, i am struggling with this as i like the feathers not to have a beginning spot.
Thank you very much for the tutorial! My question is: I am also right handed. Is it easier to do the left-hand side of the feather first and then do the right side of the feather?
Thank you so very much! On the beautiful quilt that you are showing, did you do free motion quilting on your sewing machine or on a long arm machine? Thank you again! 💚
none of the free motion quilt tutorials tell you what to set the machine at other than drop the feed dogs. what do you set stich length at what do you set tension at for both thread and bobbin???
Just what I needed. I have got my first quilt top done.. and freaking on this part.. I have tried and my thread keeps messing up.. i have just a cheap brothers sewing machine. I ordered that piece to help with quilting. Tried messing with tension and now I can't get it back to reg sewing mode.. I dont know the words used... any advice....
hi I just love your videos the problem I'm having is as I'm unable to keep the pattern so I can see it to quilt can I ask what pen or pencil you put on the fabric so you can see what your going thank you 😀
Hiya Rob. I wanted to know if you can practice on only a piece of fabric or do you always have to use a practice sandwich. Okay so I know this is a stupid question but batting is very expensive (at least in New Zealand) and I feel like it's such a waste even though it really isn't as you need to practice. I know the tension will likely be different but can you practice your hand motion speed and stitch length on fabric only. I will eventually practice on a sandwich before I tackle my actual quilts though.
Hi Eloree! You are correct in that using one piece of fabric will cause tension issues when practicing fmq. A big part of free motion quilting is managing the weight that comes from the three layers of fabric and the quilting a full size quilt. There are a couple of moneysaving tricks you can use. First, if you make a sandwich, start with a dark thread and progressively use lighter thread so that you can stitch over your earlier stitches. Second, you can practice your fmq designs by using a marker on a piece of paper, and drawing the motif. Just be sure to not pick up your marker while drawing it. This mimics sewing the motif. I hope these ideas help! Have fun free motion quilting!
Perhaps, you said on one of your tutorials, but how do we use the printouts? Are they just for use with a pencil? Or are we to transfer them to the fabric somehow?
+Ann Savonen you can use them however you want, many just trace them over and over until that movement is stuck in their head, that really comes in handy for quilting!
+Luisa Gounelas above if you hit the link for the supplies bit.ly/fmqfeathers it brings you to the Missouri Star tutorial for Rob. Underneath it shows practice drills. Click on both and you will get the 2 printouts
I have Janome 11000 sewing machine which was given second had and I was wondering if you could recommend the best way to set up my sewing machine? I do not have all the parts and it is very hard to find information due to the machine being considered on the old side. I would to try free motion but I am terribly afraid because I do not know how to tell when my tension needs adjusted. I am not a strong at sewing and I really do not know what is good tension and what is bad tension. I know that sounds silly. But I am afraid to mess with my tension. Also in my limited manual I have says you do not need to oil the sewing machine. Is that true that you do not ever need to oil this type of sewing machine? I know that sounds silly and I should know my sewing machine inside and out but I do not. Anything you could recommend would be very helpful so that I could get the best sewing experience when I try to free motion for the first time.
You look so sexy with those white gloves Rob, hahahahaha! But love your free motion quilting lessons, I hate it but you put the mojo back to give it another try!
