Online speech is vital to modern democracy, enabling widespread participation in public discourse and the free exchange of ideas. While they are crucial in that exchange, social media platforms have sparked controversy over their role in moderating content, shaping public dialogue, and negatively influencing users. This contentious landscape has led to legal challenges and debates about free expression and the First Amendment in the digital age.
AEI will host two panels examining the latest legal and regulatory developments in online speech and the challenges of regulating digital expression in a globalized world. The first panel will unpack the US Supreme Court’s 2024 rulings on digital expression, including the Court’s NetChoice v. Paxton, Murthy v. Missouri, and Lindke v. Freed decisions. The second panel will focus on state-level attempts to limit access to online content.
