Well this is a strange one. A complete stranger who I hadn’t met until ‘that day’ gave me his 1966 Fender Mustang. Somehow this one has come back as a player.

My brother's godfather is a musician. One day when I was 11 or 12 he and his wife come over, and he starts asking me about guitars n stuff, and he's like "Do you know which guitar has horns \m/?" I said "A strat?", thinking of the body shape. He's like "guess again" -"an SG?" -"guess again". At that point I gave up. He tells me to follow him to his car, he opens the trunk. In it is a B.C. Rich flying V. Kerry King tribal finish. I was a huge metalhead at the time. My eyes must've looked like 2 dinner plates. To this day, that was the best playing guitar I've had. He had it professionally set up. I did sell it since my music tastes changed, and I do regret it a tiny bit.

I can definitely relate somewhat in this backstory as I too used to be a big metalhead, painfully attracted to sharp, pointy guitars. I too would like likely soiled myself had this all happened to me as a teenager.

I love this story. I would have done the exact same thing buy putting it back together to make it a player. It turned out amazing. I've never received a free guitar but I have given several away for free. I love the feeling of making someone smile and them being able to create and express themselves thru music.

You’re a good soul, Adam! I love musicians like you who enrich the lives of others by way of empowering them with artistic expression. Thanks for being that person, seriously. Thanks for watching! I have more to the story which I’ll share soon after I stop dropping things on my right foot during this move I’m undergoing at the moment. 😖

The stamp on the heel of the neck actually reads as follows: 8 is the numeric designation given to the Mustang (that first number is the model, not the day of the month), NOV 65 is all of the date info, and B was the designation given for the 1 5/8" nut width.
@11thFret
@11thFret Год назад
Thanks! I was learning all about that as I went, knowing I'd likely make a mistake or two. I figured it would be a 1966 Mustang based mostly around the months, as I imagined it'd take at least a couple months beyond the manufacturing date to get it to a store.

Nice player grade vintage axe! Honestly ya inherited a free project and payed a few hundreds bucks plus labor to get it to come back to life. These are some of the best budget priced players grade guitar that you don’t have to feel guilty about playing or gigging with. You could always try to sell the original neck and tuners marked down a bit to try n recover some of the restoration cost.
@11thFret
@11thFret 7 месяцев назад
I agree. I love these player grade vintage axes as all guitars deserve to be loved played. Sadly too many vintage guitars are just too pricey to even be looked at or breathed on for fear of devaluation. This ‘66 is still ripe to tour with.

Yes, around 1980 when I was a young player my uncle Dave Stallard gave me an Ibanez '77 'lawsuit' LP Custom Black Beauty, my first decent electric. I really grew and advanced with it, played this guitar on stage and for recording. It was my main axe for decades and it was awesome. 3 PAF-type humbuckers. Bolt neck of course but I have no prob with that and it rang like a bell and sustained all week. Uncle Dave died recently with Alzheimers etc. and I lost a dear friend, and we all lost a great musician/entertainer. Next topic- Mustangs kick ass! I got one cheap at the pawn, a Squier HH hardtail in perfect condition painted in Fender surf green or whatever they call it. Dressed and polished the frets, cleaned and oiled the board, adjusted truss, intonation and action, that's it. Perfect. Love the 24" scale, it's a hoot to play. I wish Fender and Squier would offer Tele and Strat models with this shorter neck. I love my Tele but I really enjoy playing the Mustang more, as my hands are a little smaller than average. At this scale length I can make some chord reaches into the next octaves and run lines better all over the neck but especially up near the nut where a 25-1/2" scale feels a bit 'reachy' for me. Oh well, a long comment but enjoyed your show today, enjoy that Mustang!

Man, what a comment to unpack. First and most importantly: RIP to Uncle Dave Stallard. I'm sorry to learn of his untimely passing due to Alzheimer's. He sounded like a great guy we should all aspire to be more like. Those Squier Bullet HH Mustangs are a real score across the board. They go up used all the time, and I'm likely going to grab one sooner than later just because. Despite my "cheap guitar will always be a cheap guitar" video and how many misinterpreted my message, these Mustangs are a fun modding platform. My best friend just literally modded one two days ago with GFS Surf 90's, a Switchcraft angled toggle switch, CTS pots, and new tuners. His neck even has a modest flame to it. They're so good. Thanks for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it.

One thing left to do, add a roller string tree from an American Standard parts pack. It'll enhance vibrato stability.

Feel great about that. You really are a wonderful person, whether you’ve gotten credit for it or received none at all. You really are amazing in helping someone’s journey into guitar more accessible if not easier to tread. To be fair, I gave back to the gentleman who gave me these guitars where he was moved to tears. I didn’t expect that kind of response. I hope you have that moment yourself someday. Thank you for trying to make the world a better place. I truly, genuinely mean that. I’m sure the recipients deeply appreciate it, even if they’ve yet to express it.

Hell yeah! This is the Tacoma Rainier’s minor league baseball cap! I just brought my 5yo son to his first ever baseball game there while I was back home visiting family a couple months ago. Plus, Pacific Northwesterners recognize this “R” logo as something similar to our old pisswater classic: Rainier Beer.

This is great. I would have done the same exact thing. Guitars rs are meant to be played and specifically Fenders are meant to have parts replaced. Good on you! Any plans to refinish to a stock color?
@11thFret

Nah. No plans for that. The top of the body was sanded in such a way it ate into the upper and lower horns. I figured it best to leave it be to be played and loved more.

@@11thFret Red sounds reasonable - At least it was not green or blue, I did not understand why you replaced the original tuners. Who knows maybe in the future he would have more things for you ...👍I have a good feeling
@11thFret
@11thFret 2 года назад
I didn’t exactly “replace” them. The old tuners weren’t exactly in good operational shape, grinding with every twist. I kept them on the original neck where I intend for these tuners to stay. The old neck will get bubble wrapped until I can figure out what exactly its next move will be. The new tuners were simply for operation. They’re smoother and ‘appear’ era-appropriate.

*IMPERSONATOR/SCAMMER ALERT*: The 11th Fret is not on Telegram. There is a scammer impersonating the 11th Fret (/me) in the comments, so be careful not to fall victim. Do not give them anything, including sharing your personal information. I will report every comment that they make and aim to have these offenders removed. But I cannot control what happens while I'm away from the channel (eg: sleeping). The best way to contact me is via the links in this channel's "about" section. If I want to give something randomly away, I'll direct you towards the link in that section and nothing else. I will not post a link in my video's comments, unless it's another RU-vid video. Thanks to everyone for giving me a heads up, and be safe.

They’re probably made by Grover who today makes the absolute worst tuner in the business of makers who were once great. The best tuners on the market for Fender are Gotoh. I would have just went for 6 in-line regular instead of F tuners, which are trash.
@11thFret
@11thFret 4 месяца назад
Since this video, I was BS’ing with a former Fender Master Builder. And they said Fender contracts their tuning machines out to Ping for manufacturing. Soooo… That makes a lot of sense.
@Great-Documentaries
@Great-Documentaries 2 года назад
And you do get that those tuning machines line up perfectly on the necks they were intended to be put on, right? No, it's not a QC problem or Fender would have recalled them. You sure make a LOT of uninformed assumptions.
@11thFret
@11thFret 2 года назад
When I ask people at Fender, especially friends I have over there, and they say they’re supposed to line up - then they’re supposed to line up. I’ve been doing this for over 25 years. It’s not “uninformed” if I ask and get an answer. But thanks for your input, your own uninformed assumptions, and for watching.

@Great-Documentaries
@Great-Documentaries 2 года назад
Allparts does NOT make necks for Fender. They signed a licensing agreement long ago that Fender now greatly regrets that allows them to sell necks with the "licensed by Fender" on them. Fender makes THEIR OWN NECKS! You want to put a Fender waterslide (illegally produced) on your AllParts neck, go right ahead. But that's a partscaster, not a 66 Mustang. Otherwise my Vintage Modified with real 74 pickups is a Fender, and I should be a dick and switch the logo from Squier to Fender.
@11thFret
@11thFret 2 года назад
Fender just started making their own necks in Japan about 7-years ago after taking over the business from Fujigen and Tokai. AllParts sources some of their necks from Fujigen, Tokai, as well as USA builders - which, I hate to break it to you, are sourced from the same factory who used to build them for Fender directly. Thus, they still have the very specs Fender expected for their reissues as part of the contract. Additionally, these necks are still officially licensed by Fender for replacements. Fender will tell you this. AllParts will even tell you this. I also mentioned that I’m always keeping the original neck with this body, which is vastly more authentic compared to your Squier. I at least kept most of the original parts with this 1966 Mustang, less one tuning key and the knobs, vs just some pickups sourced off another guitar. The good news is that you don’t need to do a headstock rebranding to achieve said “dick” status while hidden behind your online disinhibition boldness. But thanks for contributing anyway.
