Joan Blades and John Gable want you to make friends with people who vote differently than you do. A pair of political opposites, the two longtime pals know the value of engaging in honest conversations with people you don't immediately agree with. Join them as they explain how to bridge the gaps in understanding between people on opposite sides of the political spectrum -- and create opportunities for mutual listening and consideration (and, maybe, lasting friendships.)

As someone who grew up in conservative small town and now lives in metro liberal city, this is absolutely correct in terms of filter bubbles and bias.

Sigh. I was expecting/hoping for an informative discussion on how we might better equip ourselves to avoid the pitfalls of today's very isolating social, media and internet culture. Perhaps *even* with some good solid facts thrown in. But alas, this turned out to be nothing more than an anecdotal statement that 'it's good to listen to differing opinions'. Whilst I do agree with this whole-heartedly, it seems to me that this talk will reach very few people that don't already share this view, and for those whom it would benefit this talk contains nothing to persuade them, making it rather disappointing. Preaching to the choir, as it were. And the irony is quite striking.

I think that this minimalist approach falls into the category of effective advocacy. If we want to reach people on the other ile it is sometimes wiser to give them an entrance level argumentation. Instead of giving them answers we try to give them something far stronger. With a culture of criticism we would be able to solve every problem, but there is a translation issue. It is easier to spark it in very rational people. However, most people need to be eased into this framework. Now when it comes to the toxic social media I would be interested in your solution. As far as I am aware the best thing we can do right now is to raise awareness. Which is something this talk does...

Listen replied: "Ok, I don't really have a good perspective about this, I usually watch talks about science, not politics. Also, I don't know how works the selection and promotion of the events, who is behind it." Oddly your reply has been omitted here. Strange how that happens. If TED stuck to the science aspects and left the social social political issues out we would all be happier.

I'm glad they contrast "conservative" with "progressive", instead of "liberal", as the term liberal has been hijacked for too long. I often say I am so liberal (in a classic sense) that I am conservative, but many don't know what I mean.

DeBaggio Yes. Berkeley used to be the pinnacle of progressive movement in the 60's but now has become regressive, in my opinion, by shutting down different voices. Same thing happened to most college campuses. This is what happens when you don't have a stick on the ground.

It's really sad that this needs to be said. People suck at talking to each other. Or more accurately, listen to each other. Unfortunately, this message will do nothing. The problem is not with the internet, the internet just exacerbates a already existing problem. The problem is with our general attitudes to everything around us. These days everything is disposable. It used to be when something was broken it would need to be fixed. Today, we just throw it away.

"Honor everyone's values and not lose your own." When you have values and positions that are completely opposed and contradictory, both views "can't be honored." One is going to get their way and one is not. You cannot "honor everyone's values and not lose your own." This is just feel good nonsense. However I do agree that if you listen to people, it tends to moderate your own views and that's valuable.

Well, both have to compromise and agree to meet in the middle. Like just erradicate half of a minority and leave the other half alive. Or abort half of the pregnancies and curse the other half to deal with children they never wanted, or to control half of the guns and therefore allow half of the mentally insane to buy them without background checks.

For a while I listened to both CNN/MSNBC and INFOWARS/FOX NEWS. I also listened to NPR and RT. I also listen to various independent media outlets. Nobody anywhere is saying anything that is not biased against someone else. It is all bullshit rhetoric coming from one side or the other. It's time to filter out the political news altogether and just ignore the screaming children on both sides.

I think they failed to point out a major source of the problem, thats the US political system with only two parties. If there would be more diversity, more parties that get more votes and no single party would be able to govern on its own, people would be forced to consider other peoples opinions more, find compromises and think about other peoples point of view. My country has lefts and conservatives too, and they do not like each other too much either. But it is not as extreme as i see it in the US, where you can be a republican or a democrat for your entire life and it works, without ever thinking too much about the enemy. If a party wants to govern here in my country, they need to find one or more partners, there are discussions, coalitions are changing, people see politicians talking to each other, pointing out common grounds so people will accept coalitions between their party and another one. Compromises and discussion are not a good idealistic thing but a necessity. This does not eliminate filter bubbles, those are a global problem. But i think, or my feeling is, that they are no where as impenetrable as in the US due to the 2 way system.

As far as I can tell, the main difference between liberals and conservatives is how big a circle of social trust they have. Liberals tend to trust more than conservatives. Research has shown that countries with greater social trust (like Norway) have higher standards of living. Many of these countries also tend to be more homogeneous. It makes sense that we tend to trust people that look like us. I think what makes America great is our ability to trust beyond those who share our appearance. Basically my message to conservatives is, you aren't trusting enough, and it's holding our country back.
@vorlonagent
@vorlonagent 6 лет назад
...As long as it's bi-directional, it's good stuff. Trust is hard to come by. I won't open myself to someone who is merely there to evangelize their viewpoint. I had a friend come to me ready to pull the plug over the 2016 election (I'm conservative). I said "if it's got to end here, that's OK,, but I'm not all that different from who I've always been." That kept the break from occurring.

persil stover The point is that because most Americans sit in a bubble with their own political ideas thanks to geographical location and social media networks, they need to branch out and try to listen to sides they may disagree with. This is the only way one can have constructive political discourse while still being able to disagree on a subject. We fail to see the other side as a side at all, and we therefore shut them out completely by discrediting them and ignoring them.

@persil stover I once was reading a text on the dark ages of europe and wondered, "how did people get this way?" Now, when I see people talking about political parties like sides of a civil war do I understand. The problem is the programming, as you have stated. The programming is coming from internet search algorithms, social media, and the fact they are no longer being built as tools. Rather, they are control mechanisms for advertisers to make money. Gone are the days when advertisers had to identify a market to advertise too. Now, they just build the market through the social engineering of filter bubbles. This is a new enemy beyond the comprehension of most. It doesn't stop at political parties. For instance, your clear fascination with low riders and fact channels. There is an entire community of fact channels on youtube, and many of them using marketing tactics to get to its users. For example, After Skool mostly employs marketing professionals and designers. However Nina Bennett is the actual information source. And when I look at her credentials she is a liberal propagandist. All she does is research ways to implant information in peoples minds. And while I could go on down that rabbit hole, I must return to the main point. Vast amounts of financial, human, and energy resources are going into the development of search algorithms, which redirect people into a filter bubble, so they can try to sell you products.

This would have been improved had it examined for which sorts of issues such an approach can work and which issues are too close to zero-sum. Also, my own observation is that these conversations tend towards one party doing 90% of the moving and both of them calling it even. Or one concedes and calls it compromise, while the other compromises and calls it concession.

Have a token conservative friend? Sounds like people saying "I'm not racist... I have a black friend." "I'm not in a bubble... I have a conservative friend." I care about your argument, not your character, not your traits, not the labels you are branded with. Everyone is looking for ways to empower their arguments and dis-empower their opponents through methods other than argument. You're a racist, I have conservative friends, you are a bigot, I went to university, you are a christian, I have a high IQ. The reason there is so much polarisation is we are parroting other peoples opinion's rather than our own. When someone replies to an opinion you did not form yourself, you can't defend it and so you assume your opponent is cheating somehow. When the late night comedian said this line... everyone agreed and laughed, when I say it now you retort with an argument.... you must be a bigot.

Well, if you get 9 minutes at TED you may want to use that time to it's fullest. Many of as already know the value of talking to eachother. Too many talks about talking and nothing else. It's the same in politics, that's why nothing gets done most of the time. I'd like to think that people subscribed to TED are a bit more open minded so that message is wasted on us. Even more in the US than in other countries without bipartisanship (FRance for example) a political view is not a divide of two types of principles like conservative and progressive or republican and democrats. It is an educational divide, a divide of wealth and culture. You can't say that in order to live in a better country you should get less educated, less cultured values and concepts. No, you should, through care, respect and education, make those "republican" become "democrats".

Progressives often talk about being tolerant, about accepting diversity, but then also prefer that government decides what's good and then uses force to make sure all do it just like they say (don't eat sugar, don't smoke tobacco, don't smoke marijuana, don't use plastic bags, don't drive your car, don't show bias against race/gender or whatever is a "good" class of the day). If you want to convince me of these with your discussion, that's awesome. But as soon as you turn to the powers that be to enforce it, you've stopped talking and just devolved to ancient tyranny.
