If your wondering why this video has appeared on the front page of my channel when we are quite a way through the series it's because I couldn't get the video out of unlisted mode and it was only accessible via the playlist / direct link. I have finally managed to so it can be picked up by youtube. Sorry for the confusion :) And thank you to all for your kind comments and support.
I've been using desktop CAD programs for 37 years and have read all sorts of "how to" books, watched a staggering number of instructional tutorials, and just muddled through all sorts of instructional classes for various programs. None of them came close to giving me a basic idea of how to begin as did this video. The best aspect of all was the sense that "I can see how this works." As an architect, my two primary programs were DataCAD and SketchUp. As a budding 3D printer novice, you've made me certain that FreeCAD will be my primary modeling software. Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you for taking the time to produce these training videos. Your mastery of Freecad allows you to get straight to the point in a concise and precise way. In addition, your vocabulary and your pronunciation eliminate any possible ambiguity. Very good teacher. In addition, your British accent is very pleasant to listen to.
Thank you so much for the feedback and kind words, great to hear that your enjoying these videos. The community has been so kind and it's a pleasure to share this knowledge with such grateful watchers. Thank you once again. Every time I read a comment like this it puts a smile on my face.
1. I read the reviews bellow and agree with all of them. in two words Really GREAT. 2. I am a System engineer in the high tech and made (as hobby) some designs using SweetHome 3D, a friend told me about the FreeCAD and I read the onlines manuals, I have never been so confused as if it a rocket science. I surrender to watch video ( i watched one (not yours it was OK). 3. After I saw your first Video I understood, that the best and shortest way to get started with this is by watching your great (explanatory, simple, with examples etc..) videos. And never going back to the 'Documentation'. 4. About documentation- Developers engineers have a problem to understand what is the audience and their needs. It could be very useful to have a text file (PDF) that lists all you actions happening on the video: Like a table with two columns activity target: Method to achieve Setting Display preferred icon size Main Toollbar.Edit.Preference Left-Click General[Application].Size of toolbar Icon. Drop Down.Select Medium (24px)
Thanks, Mango. It is really a superb idea beguin "again" with a freeCad beguinners guide (v 0.20), because the web is full of thousands of videos without schedule/planning. Great idea and great job. Thanks a lot
Thanks for that, I was trying to figure out a way to bring together some of the concepts that I have touched on before in a structured way. It's been great to do these tutorials. I find you always need a real world example to really get the concepts across and that is one of the hardest things to come up with or find. The community have been great with the feedback, and I thank you all 😁😁
Very glad I found your channel ! Just divorced from Windows to embrace Linux, needed a program to draw the plans of my Tiny House and for some fun 3D printing modeling later on. Love your style : calm, concise and very British, as a longtime anglophile this couldn't have turned out better lol. ThanX
Thank you for the feedback and kind words so happy this series has helped people like yourself. And thank you for commenting on the teaching style, it's exactly what I have been trying to achieve.
WOW! I am impressed. Thank you SO much for this! I saw some other FreeCAD tutorials and was very frustrated. You have in just the first segment answered a lot of my questions.
Thank you so much for this course, I'm starting on 3D printing, and chosen FreeCAD as a part building platform. This course helped me a lot, I'm cuming from CGI (Caligari and Sculpt 4D Commodore Amiga, TrueSpace PC and finally Cinema 4D PC) so it's not like starting new. Cheers
Great to hear your enjoying the series. What did you use on the old Amiga (1200 or 4000?) I came from imagine3D then Lightwave on that platform, I loved that machine! Truespace finally made me change from Amiga to PC and then I want off to 3DSMax then Rhino. The Amiga was the most creative platform for it's day, I miss that machine (even have some emulation tutorials on my channel as that was what I originally made this channel for lol) The Amiga still has a huge following.
@@MangoJellySolutionsYes I'm 51 and my first computer was a Timex Sinclair 1000 (1982), than moved to ZX Spectrum 48K, back then I was already programing in Basic and did some graphical material on the ZX. When the Amiga computer was launched, it was a BIG leap in computer graphics, first I bought the Amiga 500 (still have it), and then the Amiga 3000 (sold it), it was a very expensive machine, but amazing too, used Caligari and Sculp 4D. My last Commodore machine was the Amiga 1200. Moved then to PC and used TrueSpace 4 and 7 for a long time, used 3DSMax for a while, but since Cinema 4D came out, never looked to another software. Now I just want to turn my ideas a reality thru 3D printing. Thank you for your answer. Merry Christmas.
Coming from VFX Background, having the maya gesture is godsent, I adapted to the viewport almost instantly. Edit: Tip for People who are used to maya: Under the navigation style menu, go to settings> orbit style > change it to Free TurnTable
Thanks so much for the work you put in to making this excellent series. Just an observation. On the mouse settings on windows 10 version not all the features are shown on the template popup when in CAD mode which is the default. In addition it seems impossible to do some of things like rotating the object. However if you set it to touchpad, then everything works as you describe with the mouse.
So glad your finding the tutorials usefully and your enjoying them. Yes it takes alot of work creating these tutorials, editing takes at least 3 times the amount of video running time and also making the written documents before which I release to patreon. So alot of work but it's well worth it to share h the knowledge. Thank you for highlighting the navigation issues, always greatful for comments as it enriches the channel. Hope you enjoy the rest of the videos. Many thanks.
TOP video, congratulations! I'm following the channel and really enjoying it. I'm from Brazil and I work with 3D modeling using the CREO software, I'm liking FreeCad more and I'm adapting to it. Thank you for taking the time to teach how to use this fantastic software.
Just getting started with this. Freecad is on version .21, so I hope that will not be too different to follow along with this series. Seems almost about the same. Some stuff in preferences was a little different though. I bought a 3d printer a few months back and looking forward to learning this. I took a cad course back in college using autodesk inventor... that was over 20 years ago lol.
There are a few differences but nothing to bad. The auto constraint option can be found from the sketcher constraints section from a small drop down. And the image workbench no longer exists but I have created a video telling you where the option to import and scale a image is now located. How you enjoy the series. Half way through I do change from 0.20 to 0.21
@@MangoJellySolutionsI've only done the first video so far. I figure I'll do a couple per week until I get my wings so to speak. This one was quite good. I got the software installed and just kinda got familiar with it. Next one should be more interesting.
thanks for providing the course of study. If I succeed, in cad, it'll be a milestone. So far, cad programming has not been functional for me, requiring real study, but now I have more time, more Sitzfleisch.
CAD has a steep learning curve and it takes time to get the most out of it. But with practice you will soon be making your own models. It's one of the reasons I put this together and glad it's helping so many people.
Just a note for future viewers of this video. As of today (2022-06-22) the download page shows 0.20 as the current stable version. I think it was updated a couple days ago. This should take away any potential anxiety about downloading a development version versus the publicly released "Current stable version".
WOW, that is a nice playlist, just downloaded the software. It will take me a while but I will later give you my feed back. I am an AP, Apppointed Person, I do liftplans for lorry mounted cranes and I need a new look on my presentation documents for better illustration, and I think you could help with your tutorials.
I love seeing what people are using these videos for, amazes me each time. This one has to be one of the unique ones. Thanks for sharing and hope they help you with your work.
Thank you for this first video in the series. I was able to get through it though had interruptions along the way. One thing I noticed that when I double click on the sketch model for some reason a new inner screen pops up that shows the recent files and examples. Which is a bit different from what you showed. I'm on a mac using freecad version 0.20.2-29603.
I got really lost, workbench's were all messed up, I did not know what to do,,, so, I uninstalled everything, re d/l it again, started at the beginning, NOW it is starting to make sense, . If I have to go over the particular lesson, ok by me, I'll keep repeating it till I understand... thanks again for this and other great vids(tuts)
Sorry to hear everything went chaotic when you started but sounds like your winning now. I know the feeling. I just had to reinstall blender 3d for the exact same reason. Slow and steady is the way to master any program. No need to rush 😊
@@MangoJellySolutions sure do agree with you on the slow and steady part, I have tried to learn blender, was very tough for me, would you mind sharing with me the way you are learning blender? thanks
@@royalmaster203 I have been using blender for a while but I found that it's best to seek out the menu items rather than use short cut keys. It means that tutorials take 10 times as long to complete but things begin to stick. I hate watching the videos that are a barrage of short cut keys, they end up teaching you way too much in to short time and you miss so much. Going through the menus you find out what's also there and get an idea of how the program hangs together.
@@MangoJellySolutions thanks MangoJelly, do you mean the tutorials on Blender itself, there are many.. no shortage to learning new stuff, right now, I want to stick with Free cad, THEN start back on Blender, thanks again for helping me
I'm very grateful for taking the time to make a tutorial. I would ask that for future videos, you could add a bit volume. It is nearly impossible for me to hear what you're saying on my laptop without 125% volume, which is really scary since I've blown speakers that way before. Also, you've been talking about workbenches for six minutes, but you haven't explained what a workbench is. :)
The volume is has been corrected in future videos and the quality is much better as I purchased a decent microphone. Ah yes I forget to add that. A workbench is a area with a set of tools to do specific jobs. Most workbench tools can be used in others. Workbenches such as sheet metal have tools specific for that purpose where as others can be mixed and match with others.
Your turorila is really good, My big problem with FreeCad are the drop down box dialogue are so small I can not read them. I use a 27" monitor and the text in my laptop in your tutorials is 5x large and easy to read. HOW do you get the text in FreeCad larger.
Do you have a tutorial on ;inside outside gears? its to step down a medical drill that rotates at RPM 180. Needs to rotate at 60. Thinking a small gear driving a bigger gear would do it. ie small gear inside a bigger gear with inward teeth?
Thank you for this. I am waiting on the delivery of my first 3D printer and I really want to be able to create my own parts, these tutorials are a Godsend. I'm getting myself an Ender 3 v2 and I hope to be able to create stuff to compliment my woodworking projects. Cheers for this. I will drop you a donation when pennies are available.
I might actually like this software than Fusion360. Especially after that last update where they no longer support old Windows software. I still use Windows 10.
Hey [Name], I'm learning HTML and CSS on RU-vid and thought it might be more enjoyable and productive to have a learning partner. Interested in joining me?
20:19 In version 0.21.1 I don't have an option to create a new sketch. In fact, I had to create a separate toolbar to even see the button. When I left the Sketcher workbench and went to Path and back, I got the regular toolbar that has the "Create sketch" option, but it was still greyed out. Hitting escape a few times to exit the editing mode of the sketch allowed me to create a new one next to the old one.
Thank you. And thank you for the heads up. The link should of been to an older video on my channel but the process is the same. I have updated the notes with the following link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RrPtLOVVKYA.html
Yes. If you open the sketch workbench and go top the top menu > edit > preferences and then select the sketcher from the left hand side (you may have to scroll down) you will see on the general tab within the sketcher settings 'esc will leave sketch edit mode' which can be unchecked.
Yes it can, no knowledge of CAD is needed, and no coding is needed at all but macros can be written if you want to get into playing with creating your own tools.
Why did you turn off error reporting? if you don't know the errors in your sketch how do you resolve them? this is an issue I am having in learning Freecad. thanks for you feedback.
So the error reporting can get quite annoying and will keep popping up even with warnings. Errors can be seen in the status bar or when you hover over problematic elements in the tree view. You will also get a visual and audio indication within your sketch when errors occur. Also with a number of issues when sketching the problem will be shown a the top of the left hand panel. Hope that helps.
Why are you bypassing setting up toolbars? I've got next to no toolbars no mater what workbench I go into. And I cannot find any info on what's going on.
Thank you for putting on the information. At 14.56 / 24.03 the means to turn around the subject is seen - two rounded arrows - like the pisces sign. I have not found this on my version which is Freecad 0 20 2. Can you tell me how to find the two arrows please?
Is there a setting to make my drawing lines for ...viewable? They're so thin it's hard to see on my laptop. I can't seem to find a setting to thicken the drawing lines.
I someone ago put together a blog post regarding settings to increase sizes / making things a bit more readable. This may help. mangojellysolutions.blogspot.com/2022/12/settings-and-resources-to-help-with.html
@@MangoJellySolutions Yeah, it helped with everything I already was able to change. I was able to finally get the dimensions to respond and I can read them now but the drawing lines...still VERY difficult to see. It wouldn't be such a problem if it wasn't so hard to click on edges and align things when you can barely see the line to select.

@@MangoJellySolutions You have a similar accent and voice is why I'm asking. I switched from watching him to you and started your tutorials. Thanks a lot.
Okay, I got as far as creating a circle..but I can’t let go of it…once I draw it out to size it keeps moving with the curser. What am I doing wrong? It’s set to touchpad so using a laptop. Thanks!
If you are editing a sketch or in the middle of the operation then it will be greyed until you finish the operation. Check the panel and the task tab on the left and hit OK / Cancel. You should be able to then enable the axis cross.
Greetings sir, Please I'm Anthony chating from Nigeria, I want to go into 3D design and printing but don't know how to go about it most especially knowing the best machine product to buy for it. Please can I get any help or guidance from here
current version is 0.21 the menu tab names have changed, cannot find units and error messaging is now under a tab Report View. Do you have an undated version of your video for us newbies? please.. thanks
Help ... I get to the point of when you click on the line and when I move my mouse I don't see any white rectangle lines. I only get rotate arrows, when I hold down left mouse button and drag then the cube rotates the screen. I have looked at all the drop down settings and poked at every thing till I got frustrated. Am I not doing something right or is my software not working. I downloaded the windows ( FreeCAD_weekly-builds-30492-2022-10-17-conda-Windows-x86_64-py38 ) I am running windows 10. I have attempted to get this program to work several times now with no luck. Thnx.
I just installed version 0.21.2 there is not Units on my toolbar and I am unable to located 'Units' anywhere. am curious, is this Units a need be thing or can I just get away without it? File | Edit | View | Tools | Macro | Windows | Help my view
Just found out that the hitboxes are completely off and all packed together, quite certain this is a bug, quite certain that I can't fix this as well ^^"
There is the freecad wiki which you could print to pdf from but I do have some of the series for sale as a download on my kofi shop at ko-fi.com/mang0 for a small fee. You get the bonus of them being yt add free.
@@MangoJellySolutions Thanx for getting back to me, I'm intersted in your videos for off line training, I'm off line most off the rest of summer and need to find a way to pay you, does visa work for you and how to pay in pounds from Canaidian
Linux is supported (the series is run from a ubuntu box). I believe people have run it from a pi. It be worth checking in with the forum to see how it behaves on the system
Perhaps you've had this happen. While using 1.19.3, I created an complex object, saved it and closed it, only to have FreeCAD unexpectedly close (CRASH). I re-opened the program and went to file open again, only to have it close (CRASH) again. This unexpected close happened repeatedly. Uninstalling FreeCAD and upgrading to 1.20 didn't resolve this issue. Removing any instances and clearing %AppData%, and the registry entries and reinstalling didn't fix it. Only a Reset This Computer Windows install, then reinstalling FreeCAD fixed this issue. Just a warning to other users. The FreeCAD forums didn't exactly cover this issue.
The problem returns every so often. I'm thinking my computer has underlying issues. I experience lock ups with Minecraft and Blender as well as the unexpected closing of FreeCAD. Hmmmm
This is the thing with softwares. 7 minutes into the one year old tutorial someone decided to remove the units tab so that the tutorial cannot be followed. (Yes, I did find it, but anyway- why changing around all the time)?
Thank you for your kind comments. I have a lot of plans to add more videos including some additional mini series regarding certain subject areas as they don't really fit with this series. These will be such things as projects, how to builds, certain design areas i.e 2D drafting and technical drawing so there is a lot to come and I have more and more ideas and requests every day 😁
