Use FreeCAD to build a basic lidded enclosure, screw down lid and threaded holes using a FreeCAD Part Design workflow using a shape binder across multiple files keeping the lid and box separate. We finish by creating a assembly with the lid and the box without using an assembly workbench but using the link feature.
This course is aimed to teach the fundamentals of free CAD understanding the basics but delivering via teaching you different workflows.
We aim to teach you freeCAD in a practical way.

I have been away from FreeCAD a while. This video is packed full of techniques that everyone must master. I have re-watched this a few times and keep picking up fine details of your workflow. Links between documents….interesting but what do I gain/lose from that. I think the video intent was to show that functionality as it applies to other project but not a requirement to actually make the lid. As always I appreciate your wonderful teaching skills and passing that to us!❤

Ahhh.. linking the bodies worked first time. Then I had more hair tearing out when practising. I found I could not move the lid. Then I found my error. Dont select the model to link from the graphic. Pick it from the design tree. Highlight the BODY of what you want from there. 👍

I thought u need to create a datum plane on the face you are sketching on. But apparently that is not necessary anymore. I think it had something to do with the topological error. Thanks for the video mate. Linking bodies i have not done so far!

Insanely good tutorial. Thanks. One thing bothers me so much in FreeCAD compared to other software that feature tree is so confusing to me. Other than that it's getting quite ok to use these days.
@billstoner5559
@billstoner5559 Год назад
I found the toolbar confusing, too. To help, I moved the bars over to the left vertical side, leaving only the “iso view” tools on the main toolbar. It provides a little more height to the work window and, for me, an easier feature point and click on the left. Of course you could put the toolbars pretty much anywhere in the window to suit your working style.

Hi All, Like many others making good progress. A tip for what it's worth @ 28:56 when initiating the Hole Subtract I got a recompute error and no model when the Hole Side Menu appears. I back tracked and discovered an error I thought I had corrected earlier (Selecting the circles & imported geometry then making them equal). It seems even though I had deleted the incorrect part of the sketch a circle element remained in the elements side bar to the left of screen causing the recompute error. I'm working very slowly through theses Tuts & starting to realise that you need to be very precise and aware of not only the sketch but also the Elements as you edit them. I take this to be some kind of programming feature. No complaints and perhaps I'm starting to appreciate the various relationships of the GUI.
@leroycasterline1122
@leroycasterline1122 Год назад
It would be helpful if you named your sketches, pockets, pads etc. Not only would it make the videos easier to follow as we backtrack to correct our mistakes, but it's a very good practice to boot.

I agree it's one thing that I don't do as I thought it would be better to keep the video short as possible. But I do think this would help especially with the bigger build and I will start doing this in the future. Thank you for this, really helps make the videos more easier to follow.

I made a larger box using this video also cut a hole for a display through the top, one thing is the recessed holes in the lid for the screws failed a bit due to the print of those is inverted, so I printed without the recess all okay, maybe if I used counter sunk screw holes it would be fine in future 🙂

Thank you, I am past this level, but watch all your videos because your workflow is often smarter/more efficient - and I can learn a trick or two. But what is the advantage of separate files? Why not have both bodies in the same file?
@MangoJellySolutions
@MangoJellySolutions Год назад
Thanks, and thank you for the feedback. The seperate file is there just for choice. The main file might get cluttered with lots of bodies so this is just a way of given the designer more options to work in their preferred way. Shape binders can be used in any workbench not just part design. Which opens up many possibilities (I will be going into that soon)

@@MangoJellySolutions Thanks for your reply. Looking forward for those tutorials of yours. I do prefer machines projects, but recently I put in my mind to represent in a 3D model a kind of warehouse/workshop that was built, with 50x20x20 concrete blocks, by a local bricklayer and where I "stuffed in" my tools and machines to perform some light repairs on my vehicles and agriculture farm equipment touch ups. It's a simple 10 X 6 m rectangle (top viewed) construction with an inner L shaped wall at of the corners for a separated compartment. The roof is made of sandwich type panels with expanded PU in the middle. The 6 roof panels are sitting over a set of 5 Omega shaped galvanized beams 10 meters long, 1.5m apart from each other approx. The 6 roof panels are 6 x 1m each. There is a 12.1º inclination on the roof and of course the same 12.1º cut at the top edges of 2 opposite walls. The other 2 walls (10 m long - rectangular faces) have around 2.4 and 4-meters height. I've done the model in Part design workbench but in Arch workbench I can't figure out the way to get the 12.1º cut on the top edge of the 2 walls (non-rectangular faces) to accommodate the beams and the roof panels. This is a challenge indeed. I would appreciate anyone's solution on this......🙉. Regards
@MangoJellySolutions
@MangoJellySolutions Год назад
So wall in arc workbench can be made from a base shape. This can be a line or a solid. If you have the right shaped wall in part or part design you can add them into a wall in arc workbench. Does that help at all?

Another great tutorial, MJ...thanks. Question: What is the motivation for breaking the box parts out into two separate files, versus keeping them in one, multi-body file?
@MangoJellySolutions
@MangoJellySolutions Год назад
Thank you glad you enjoyed. The motivation is just to show, well just that you can 😁. It's down to your preference at the end of the day. If you have multiple parts and the file starts to get 'busy' then you have this option. Also I wanted to demonstrate the flexibility of the shape binder across multiple files so to expand the designers options.

Very helpful for someone new to FreeCad you are coaching good technique. I have one concern: I think the symetry operation has turned the new threads to left handed. If so maybe add threads to all holes after symmetry?
@MangoJellySolutions
@MangoJellySolutions Год назад
Thank you thanks for the kind words. I didn't spot that re the symmetry, I am going to have to check that as I 3d printed it for a friend who's using it at the moment. If it is the case yes you can add it as the last feature. Great spot. Thanks for highlighting that.

@@MangoJellySolutions Ive just recreated what you did and can see that the thread is left handed on the symetry plane copy. Having a great time learning from your tutorial! Just a note, I'm at about 10:55 and when I create the new file for the lid, it doesn't show up in the tree view unless I bring that tab into focus. After a little digging I found a setting under View -> TreeView actions -> Multi document that shows both documents in the tree view like in the video. This is a very useful video for me.Thanks a lot. I replicated the steps shown in your video (just adapted the box dimensions for my project). In my model I created two sizes of screw posts viz. for M3 and M2. The. complete model (box + lid) including the M2 and M3 threads came out very well. I exported the ".stl " file for box to "Ultimaker Cura, V5.2.2" and printed the sliced file using the "Ultimaker 2+ Connect", 3D printer. The box came out perfect but the M2 and M3 hole diameters are by far not large enough to accomodate the M2 and/or M3 screws. :-((. I have double checked the M2/M3 stuff in the model, they are corect! Any idea or suggestion what could possibly have gone wrong? B.t.w. I am using FreeCad version 0.20.2 Thanks for your help in advance.

Very good! You'll get a coffee on me. Question - when I am in Sketcher, I cannot rotate the view unless I press on the curvy arrows or faces on the upper right hand corner of the view screen. But in your video, I see you were rotating the sketch view smoothly as will with the cursor. How did you do that?
@MangoJellySolutions
@MangoJellySolutions 11 месяцев назад
Thank you 😊, so I rotate the view using a key on the keyboard and moving the mouse. If you look down to the bottom right of freecad you will see a button with a mouse on it, this changes the navigation method you are using. If you click on that you can choose the different types such as CAD, Blender etc. If you roll the mouse over the icon a pop up will appear. That will show what keys and mouse combinations to use to control the movement. The pop up will look similar to the diagrams in the freecad wiki wiki.freecad.org/Mouse_navigation#:~:text=CAD%20navigation,-This%20is%20the&text=Alternate%20method-,Press%20the%20left%20mouse%20button%20over%20an%20object%20you%20want,to%20zoom%20in%20and%20out.

Sir, what happens to the cross body link of the shape binder if the files are separated for use in different models later? i.e. will an update to BoxBody still have an affect on the BoxLid if they are used in different parts in different models? I hope you can follow my question. I wouldn't want unexpected changes showing up else where. Thank you for all the awesome teaching. 🍎 This question was left to mark my thought process. I see the shape binder is being used as a reference to new geometry and should not affect later models. But I'm seeing the binder might still be changed.

At about 8:30, you mention that we're putting off the holes in the posts to avoid topological issues. Would you explain this?
@MangoJellySolutions
@MangoJellySolutions Год назад
When you build parts on PartDesign they are automatically fused. So the next feature is built upon the previous. When you change something further up the tree everything after will reconfigure and recompute. When this havens sometimes a edge will be named different than it was before. Anything referencing that edge will move to the new edge. This will be better managed in the future release of freecad.

for an absolute beginner, this stuff is overly complex. I've done a lot of 3d design, and am pretty good at it, but this UX is aweful. I really do appreciate your tutorial, but one small tip: explain as you go. because something as simple as hiding a body is probably evident for you, but after googling for a few minutes I realized you hit space bar instead of double clicking it. and that goes for a lot of actions anyone familiar with this software takes on youtube... I'm also clicking the exact same things as you and getting errors, even after rewinding and trying again several times
