"If you don't have facts, you can't have truth. Without truth, you can't have trust. Without these three, we have no shared reality. We cannot attempt to solve any problems." Maria Ressa in the Beatty lecture at McGill University in 2022. Respect.
The problem is democracy is being used as a blanket term to preserve the very systems that have lead to things being so bad. Democracy is not fragile. What is fragile is the systems the elite have built.
As a Filipino and grew up in the Philippines, I watched and knew Maria Ressa years ago when she was CNN Asia field reporter! She’s a very strong and credible reporter. I was a kid when the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. was our president, I was in high school when Filipino people revolted against the dictator, it was a very scary especially we used to live near the military Airbase, I saw tanks roaming around on the streets, my mom told us to hide for safety. I have first hand experienced living in a country under a regime of a dictator, our voices were being suppressed! My uncle who were political activists were silenced, they have to hide/secret place when they have meetings with his fellow activists!
@@brianhoffman8055 yeah! Even if I was not and can not vote in the Philippines I’m still very much concern about the democracy over there. I campaigned for Leni, and I’m not in good terms with my high school classmates and friends because 99% of them voted for Bongbong! They all know that we were scared during Marcos regime. I can’t understand some of my friends and relatives over there. I asked them if they already forget those scary moments in our life when we were young.
@@bonzrh68I understand completely Leni would have been a good choice. I lived in the Philippines for a couple years. Negros and Cebu. Love the happy down to earth usually smiling and joking faces. I couldn’t believe like you said how many people voted for him. Maybe the younger people didn’t grasp what happened with his father but the older people who voted for him was quite shocking. On another note I hope that annulment bill goes through this time. Fingers crossed.

I've been so proud that a Filipino win for the first time this prestigious Nobel peace prize, but so angry that our government never gave her the approriate recognition due to her, instead she was prosecuted more by made up charges.
Proud to be Filipino because of Maria Ressa. Most Credible. More than 3 decades of Integrity in Journalism. Consistent. Truly Prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.
Every American should know about Maria Ressa struggle because it is one and the same as our struggle for democracy. Thank you Maria for your strength and courage. 🎉 and
But we are not struggling to keep democracy. If anything the main party that is for censorship have been Democrats. It is what it is you just need to accept that. But many of you who watch shows like this will believe is the opposite party that is the power of propaganda.
How is the government created: * If it is by the people then you have a democracy * If it is by a limited group then it is an oligarchy * If it is self selected then it is a dictatorship
She gives a great speech. Powerful delivery and insightful content about the essence of democracy, and the crisis we face. Worth an hour of anyones time.
Also, people need to acknowledge that facts and CONTEXT go hand in hand to get the complete picture. This will give room for a broader perspective, reasoning and open-ended questions; sometimes the answer is not black and white.
@@joecancer6013 4/10 troll attempt. We both know (far) right news outlets like newsmax and fox news are far less reliable. A short glance at mediabiasfactcheck should give you a good idea when you don't want to engage with common sense.

Ben Franklin, America's first large publisher and most founding of founding fathers had long been in favor of a "credibility clause" for those who controlled information. He was the biggest. Essentially, it forced information sources to evaluate the credibility of each witness/article/story anyone made public. This made them highly vulnerable to spreading lies in many ways. I.e. they could say they "heard a rumor", or "it was claimed" by someone, then publish a story about it without ever checking if the claim or witness was credible. Pretty much the business model for Fox News today. The "Credibility Clause" would have forced media to check on various levels and make sure of credibility, otherwise suing them would be very, very easy. If high level credibility couldn't be established, they would be forced to declare that in the story. That the "source cannot be proven to be credible." This was very wise because today we are in fact stuck with the Fox News systems which is liar based.
@@feffygracie Trump could ruin Fox News if it didn't back his election lies. Tucker Carlson. You old timers are certainly lost in your own hypocrisy grandma. 🙄
She is making history that a lot of us can finally be proud of after all of us fall victim to the crappy disinformation we are all being fed thru these platforms.
ALI , I AM IMPRESSED WITH THE CLARITY OF YOUR INTRODUCTION OF , MARIA RESSA. . . . WISH YOU HAVE MORE INTERVIEW OF HER IN RELATIONS TO OUR DEMOCRACY. .
She sees what I see. One cannot make a free choice if one does not have a fair understanding of the reality in which high that decision is made, and the potential consequences to their reality of either “option”: to do, or not to do. That is the ONLY question. Because, if even when presented with 2 “options”, you can (mostly) do, or not do, either. It’s just the consequences of doing, or not doing one, may cost you the opportunity to do, or not do, another.
Carlin said a few shrewd things, he also spent an enormous amount of time being a goof, and further substantial periods of time being ridiculously perverse.

I don't trade in alternate facts, and as a historian, I'm also worried about the global trend towards autocracy. Those of us who are pro-democracy are in a war with autocratic forces, but the fact that they have won some battles doesn't mean that they're winning the war. I take solace in the fact that so much of the world is supporting Ukraine, for example. When, as it seems likely, Ukraine wins, that will weaken autocrats with ties to Putin. Additionally, the European migrant crisis needs to be resolved for humanitarian as well as political reasons, and it looks like the EU is starting to take that seriously. A meaningful, EU-wide, resolution would immediately undercut the populist pull of local autocrats. So the statistics of increased support for autocrats is important, and it's worrying, but it's not the whole story. Ultimately, pro-democracy forces are fighting to make things better, and we always will have to. There are no laurels to rest on, we are always going to have new problems and those are always going to require creative and equitable solutions to the problems that arise.
@@jordandthornburgIn large part because Russia vastly underprepared for the invasion, despite excellent logistical avenues. They then delayed their invasion for two weeks so as not to annoy China (which is not a great sign for the Russia military industrial complex's ability to go it alone in the war). As predicted, the spring thaw came, and during the slog they could have avoided sooner, they were met with a well-prepared and motivated Ukrainian force. Russia had a 10 to 1 advantage in forces, on paper, in numbers of servicemen at the start of the conflict, yet they have had several call ups for fresh conscripts, including from prisons. They also have the distinct disadvantage that, should their soldiers wish to go AWOL, in many cases, they are a reasonably short walk from home. Russia lost a significant portion of its mid-level officer corps in the first few months of the fighting, due to the fact that Russian soliders are often hard to command, and often will not carry out orders without an officer present to keep shouting at them. It's a dysfunctional, underfunded, undersupplied force. As for the navy Russia hasn't just lost it's flagships, it's basically lost anything more modern navies would consider ships. I could go on. Yes, it's a war of attrition, and Russia does have some advantages beyond it's supply of what Putin and his ilk think of as cannon fodder. They do have air dominance at the moment, and they do have the ability to destroy a significant chunk of global food supplies (a think which cuts both ways, diplomatically). Russia will lose because it already did. We're just watching its very unpleasant death throes. They started a fight they could not win. Even if Ukraine's allies abandon them, and they run out of the necessary supplies to stop the invasion, any Russian victory will be temporary and pyrrhic. They'll have lost everything they need to keep Ukraine, in their desire to take it.
Every 4 years democracy is at risk with Democrats, same ol song from the same ol playbook. Stay tunned for "Republicans are making voting hard" and "Russian interference" *yawn
You're telling baseless lies about MSNBC is not going to do anything to convince anyone that Fox's lies aren't lies. When MSNBC dishes out 800 million for repeating election lies, we'll have something legitimate to talk about.

One very encouraging sign is that young people in America are predicted to be a formidable voting block in and after 2024 , and it is encouraging because those young people are tuning in , and they are LISTENING !
Not if they dont start getting off their butts and vote in EVERY election. The best theyve been able to do was 38% once which is nothing as far as the GOP are concerned.

I didn’t understand at first how Filipinos think even though I’m Filipino, since I left Philippines when I was child back in 1985. But the Philippines has so much bad things going on that it doesn’t make sense to do justice the same way a developed society would. The drug problem there is so bad, that it has to be dealt with with extreme measures. You really had to get rid of it by warning the people by execution, then delivering on it. So if you think you’re guilty, you better run and hide because they’ll get you. No trial needed. Even my family agreed that this had to happen. And guess what? Philippines is now safe to go around. Before Duterte, you can not just walk around freely and especially travel around all the islands and feel safe. Ever since 2016 the Philippines has been flourishing in tourism and actually became popular with foreign RU-vidrs as the destination to go and also live. Before Duterte going to the south islands were non existent due to terrorism and being kidnapped. Thanks to Duterte, all that is next to gone. Most people in America will not understand how that works but Duterte has more than 85% support from the population. So who are you here in America to say Duterte was bad and didn’t know what he was doing? You know nothing!
