I loved how each level affected another, destroying the fuel depots in one level would mean no helicopters in another it was pretty sweet and made it feel like a war
This game's worldbuilding and attention to detail was on some next level. I always liked how in every level, the character looks a bit different, in every chapter he changes his outfit that matches the scenario of that whole chapter. by the end, he would be fully armored in a stitched by stitched outfit, showing how much battles he has been in. seriously IO Interactive doesn't get enough praise for their attention to detail
Freedom Fighters was one of the hidden gems on the PlayStation 2. I remember picking it up on sale, most likely in a bundle. It turned out to be a really good game and a lot of fun.
No its not hidden gem. Stop using that term just because its just you who discover the game very late. Its pretty much a conventional aaa release back in the day, everybody knew about it, every big game media picked it up and gave it pretty much good reviews. Great game but not hidden gem nor underrated. It grate my nerves that those term is overused nowadays.
@@paperclip9558 everyone talks about half life 2 which came out around the same time, i have never seen anyone talking about freedom fighters at all except for a couple low view youtube videos. it doesn't matter how popular this game was when it came out it has been largely forgotten by most people, making it hard to find and at least a little bit hidden.
Haha i bought this game when it came out on an impulse after finishing a night shift not really knowing what it was or how great it would be and man…this game had some of the best gaming moments of my life lol I’m playing right now in 2024 and this is one game where the nostalgia matches reality 😂
As I know, the last chapter of the first Kane & Lynch game is made from the assets of the supposed Freedom Figters sequel that was never finished. So for those who want to have a glimpse of what Freedom Fighters 2 would be like, play that game.
@@countvronsky4025 second game is super fun in coop on the maximum difficulty, it's like you are fighting for every inch of a level and the whole world is against you. First one - not so much.
My dad used to play this in our basement when I was pretty young. I wasn't allowed to play alone but that was okay, cause than the two of us got to play it together and the whole experience was totally amazing. So much nostalgia here. Wish I could still spend time with my pops like that. He's not dead but buddy is getting pretty old and probably knows he'll get a well deserved payback for all the hell he put me through in pvp matches.
A remake of this game would be a God given gift. I had hype for Homefront but it just wasn’t as fun. As an addendum, the game uses Hitman 2’s engine, but they didn’t bother changing the shitty-on-purpose gunplay, so you have a shooter with stealth game gun mechanics. 10/10, tbh.
Seeing this game in work makes me realize Kane & Lynch: Dead Men basically reused the engine and gameplay wholesale with a broken cover mechanic and a next-gen facelift for the time, right down to the janky weapon spread and automatic reload system.
Loved this game back in the day, so hoped Io would make a sequel, but they got stuck making endless Hitman sequels. HomeFront got close, but it didn't have the manic fun of Freedom Fighters. But as for games "like" it, Have a look at Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy and The Suffering.
I would've liked to see a sequel instead of endless Hitman games. A new Freedom Fighters using the current day Hitman engine could be legendary. Homefront came close, but wasn't as good. Second Sight and Psi Ops deserve more love. Wish we'd get a modern successor to them.
Hello you. It’s always fun to see where you’ll pop up next. I never considered either of those two games similar. Not disagreeing with you, just didn’t think about that. I know I’ll have to check them out.
My aunty wanted to buy me a game back in maybe 2004? I saw Halo and without knowing anything about it I picked it right away but my cousin convinced me to get freedom fighters as it was much cheaper. I have some good childhood memories of that game, I got to play Halo years later anyways, if I had picked it that day I never would've gotten to play Freedom Fighters and wouldn't be watching this video right now :)
Damn dude. You consistently touch on games that it feels like I’m the ONLY who ever played. I’m sure many of us feel that way and thats a very cool and bonding thing to see in a channel. Instantly connect with the content because of this. Keep going and keep killing it 🔥
I do wish more games would go back to having some more "arcade-y" systems like inaccurate weapons or enemies surviving headshots, since if you're good enough at aiming (or in a cover shooter where the AI is very predictable), you can definitely get in loop of just headshotting enemies over and over. I got Freedom Fighters with the Steam Release and I appreciate the game being designed to make you not be able to just headshot everyone easily.
the inaccurate weapons made you have to use the environment to your advantage, find alternative pathways, get height advantages, things that you don't really need to do in other games because you can just sit outside the enemy's range and pick them off when they can't shoot you, or just plow right through the path of most resistance and instantly headshot any enemy on a machine gun, making them useless, and snipe snipers with pistols across the map.
One of my favorite details was how towards the end of the campaign, you could recruit Red Army deserters as squad mates. It was a cool detail, showing how not everyone was on board with the invasion anymore.
I love this game wholeheartedly. I hope IOI decide to touch this IP once again, remake, remaster, sequel, It doesn't matter. *We need more games of this kind.*
I remember this game like it was yesterday. I loved this game simply off the fact that you could literally build an army and complete missions with em. I didn’t have online capabilities back then, but being able to recruit and build an army made me feel like I had somebody to play with.
Spending all of December 29th-31st 2003 playing this game on my xbox, even skipping new years celebrations with family to finish it, so fun Also first game soundtrack I ever downloaded
You're one of the few reviewers still focusing on games you personally want to talk about, rather than chasing algorithms all the time. That's why I'm still watching your uploads after all these years. I remember renting freedom fighters from blockbusters and staying at a friends where we played it all night passing the controller back and forth. It always stuck with me how the game visually shows progress, just as you said with the player model, underground base etc. Good times.
that feeling when one of your teammates down so far away and you don't wanna go back that far to save them lmao. it's kinda incredible that this game can make you feel like a real leader, sometimes your choice can screw over all of your squad lol.
Thank you for making a video on this game! Freedom Fighters was the first videogame I ever got, and has remained my favorite all these years later. Also, the soundtrack BANGS. Still have it in regular rotation on Spotify.
I can't remember exactly, being this wudda been 19 ish years ago...but I think I remember playing this as a demo at Toys R Us... I remember it being gritty and bloody for the game it was back n the day. Also feel like this heavily influenced Mercenaries...
firmly in my top 5 games of all time. 4 player coop on game cube was a blast too. i remember me and my friends discovering a bug that let you control way more units than the game originally intended and it led to some really cool fights. And i always thought the female enemies who wore like all black... i think and had a smg you could pick up, were so cool. you didn't see many women in shooter games back then. such a gem :)
I don’t know what other game you were doing a review of, but you mentioned it being, “kind of like freedom fighters” and since then I’ve wanted you to do a video on it. I didn’t want to be annoying and just comment, “freedom fighters” on everything. But I’ve been waiting for you to cover this one for a while. Thank you so much for finally getting to it
Good I remember playing this with my friend and we played through and completed the game . He passed away just after that . Now I just found it on steam and purchased it . Can’t wait to play it tonight and hopefully relive some great memories with my best friend !!!!! RIP Greg!
It feels like at least once a year this game comes back to mind and I get extreme nostalgia and start looking up RU-vid videos. I don’t know what it was about this game that is so memorable, although I do know the soundtrack, especially ‘battle for freedom’ was stellar.
I got this game the year it came out and I've beaten it probably 15 times since. Every few years I'll pop it in and beat it around the transition between Fall and Winter. Such vibes every time.
I was just about to comment on the soundtrack 2/3rds through the video, but he put it so aptly. The music has stood the test of time so amazingly well. I like to use it as a workout playlist, since it has this driving force feeling; it screams "never give up".
To this day the reason I remember Freedom Fighters aside from it's fun, unique ( and still kind of to this day) gameplay is the fucking SOUNDTRACK. Jesper blew the music out of the water for this one and it's the reason I remember this game so vividly.
The “afterthought” of multiplayer/split screen was the most memorable part for me. My dad and I would play so many hours of just that together. Loved loved loved that so much! I even did that by myself from time to time.
Ah 2000's back when games are so diverse and complete, imagine this game having a remake, sequel, or somehow a spiritual successor, that would be hella fun co-op experience.
What a flashback. Many hours were spent on this game, the replay value was incredible as you could tackle each level in so many different ways with your squad. The simplicity was beautiful, and I wish games were this simple nowadays.
Great video mini. I grew up playing Freedom Fighters and it was one of the very first games I completed from start to finish back in the early 2000's. This deserves a remake.
So much nostalgia seeing the gameplay again. This was one of the games I replayed over and over again on my GameCube back then. Just a good introduction to 'tactical shooters'
Remember playing this a lot when I was around 9-10 years old. Never beat it though unfortunately but watching this video really makes me want to rectify that.
Holy shit I JUST reinstalled this game last night for the first time in years. Get out of my head! Also I picked this up from a garage sale way back in the day on a whim, and I'm glad I did cause I fell in love with it. Definitely one of my all time favorite PC games.
Jasper kyd is such a good composer holy shit multiplayer was so fun back then. The multiplayer is freaking fantastic. Me and my two bros and cousin use to spend hours on it. Its like a game of war with massive armies fighting against eachother. Almost as good as timesplitters
Freedom Fighters will always have a special place in my heart. I often think about this game and the gloomy winter days when I used to play this obsessively with my cousin.
I remember getting this game for the Game Cube one day in Hollywood Video, my mom said she didn't have enough for a new game so to get a used one, there weren't many Game Cube games and most were sport games so I picked this one up and didn't play it for months until I got bored of my other games. I ended up getting into the story and actually enjoyed the whole game, I still own it, too.
The Homefront series had somewhat similar themes like Freedom Fighters, though the invading enemy were the North Koreans. And unfortunately the last game (Homefront The Revolution) bombed hard, so I imagine that isn't reassuring for IO Interactive when it comes to making a sequel to this obscure game.
Homefront: The Revolution bombed hard because it was a buggy, unoptimized mess at launch that was just a more urban copy of Far Cry, while *also* being a sequel to a mostly forgotten subpar shooter from the early '10s that had a very uninspired and uninteresting campaign. Neither Homefront game failed because of the concept of an occupied America, they failed because they just weren't very worthwhile games. Freedom Fighters, however, is a cult classic that was expertly designed by a studio that still exists and still employs good designers today that could make the concept succeed again.
Does the 1st homefront have similar mechanics as freedom fighter? Recruit soldiers and take down bases or sum Played homefront revolution its ok you can only recruit 4 men to fight for you and there dumb asf you can't even command them like go here, stay there. Godfather 2 have better squad order
This was trully ahead of it's time with just enough tech to present it's ideas in a timeless way. I am happy to have played this in an era where walkthroughs and wiki pages weren't a thing. The plottwists it gave me when I thought I had beat the game was the most memorable one I've ever experienced.
Great seeing this game getting the recognition it deserves! I completed it back when it came out and I really feel you nailed it with this review. A hidden gem
I remember playing through freedom fighters when they recently rereleased it on steam. Played through on the harder difficulty iirc. I remember enjoying everything about the aesthetic (music, sound, world building/atmosphere), and thats about it. The gameplay is fine. Like the shooting isnt too bad, just nothing special. I definitely liked the openess with your objective clearing. Looking at the briefing before a level, mapping out what you might do, if you'll stop to get ammo or aomething, maybe avoiding a military checkpoint by going through an apartment building nearby, or entiring a base through the new york elevated train tracks. That was really cool. In the game, you get a bunch of rebel ai companions to follow you around and shoot bad guys, you can order them to go somewhere and hold it or follow you, and as it continues you can give stuff to people so your reputation increases and you can have like 10 dudes following at the last level. Now, this would be cool, if the rebels didn't have the tactical finesse of a goldfish. They're pretty useless other than serving as a way to not get shot sometimes, and even then the enemies ignore them and shoot you all the time. Its a fun game, recommend, but you have to be used to older stuff.
This game has such fond memories with me and my older brother. We'd play the multiplayer all the time and his annoying ass would camp the LMG spawn and just destroy me. Lol The game was left on the floor one day in the box and someone stepped on it, so I never got to play it again. :( I would instantly buy a remaster and wouldn't even think about it. To hear this game's amazing soundtrack again would be divine.
me and my cousins used to love the multiplayer so much back in the day, i bought it myself a couple years ago but still haven't dived into the single player. I might just have to now after watching this.
got this on Gamecube because I loved squad shooters and Hitman 2. Played it because I love Freedom Fighters. The soundtrack, together with that of Splinter Cell Chaos Theory have always been among my favourites, always been on my portable mp3 player, and even been my wake up tune for years.
Amo este juego, lo jugué porque mi computadora ya venia con el cuándo la compraron y realmente me encantó, la historia se me hace muy buena. Ocasionalmente aún lo juego 🔥
I’ve played this back in the day on my ps2, as well as on steam. It’s such an amazing and unique game that I wish had more popularity! I had such a fun time sending my team to sections of the map to guard, it made you feel tactical.
this was really one of my favorites as a child. the team building and the mechanics surrounding made it such a good game for me as a kid. The game has a lot of small changes throughout it is freaking insane. and yes,the soundtrack is great
5:53 Brothers in Arms Road To Hill 30 also had a similar system, where you cannot hit the broadside of a barn and have to use your squad to perform the 4 F's (Find, Fix, Flank and Finish).
