FREEDOM FOR THE PHILIPPINES is a black and white, war documentary showing actual footage of World War II. It shows how the Japanese occupied the Philippines, and how the U.S. set it free. This documentary was produced after 1946 because it ends with the Philippines independence. The World showing the Philippine Islands introduces the documentary (0:05-0:24). A visit to Manila. A seaplane flies high over the city then lands on the water (0:25-0:40). A prewar view of Jones Bridge (0:41-0:42). Views of Pre-war Manila are shown as the narrator talks of Finley Peter Dunne’s (a writer for newspapers at that time) Mr. Dooley, a fictional character he created in 1893 to include in his stories (0:43-0:55). People walk down the street and work at the stock exchange (0:56-1:12). Billboards of Camel cigarettes, Chesterfield cigarettes, Texaco’s flying horse (1:13-1:17), and a baseball stadium with young people playing the game, America’s influence (1:13-1:25). The Filipinos wanted, and the United States pledged them, independence by 1946 (1:26-1:55). They worked on a government and elected Manuel L. Quezon, President in November, 1935 (1:56-2:03). Pictures of Douglas MacArthur and Dwight D. Eisenhower in a Philippines office (1:56-2:25). Filipinos being trained by American soldiers (2:26-2:41). American destroyers in the harbor (2:42-2:48). Clark Field, December 8, 1941. Views of bi plane taking off, fighter planes in combat (2:49-3:20). The Japanese bomb Manila (3:21-3:45). A map of the Philippine Islands showing the pattern by which the Japanese took over the Philippines (3:46-4:15). MacArthur leaves on a PT boat but swears he will return (4:16-4:49). Battle scenes with ground fire, tank fire and gun nests (4:50-5:03). American and Filipino soldiers marched in a Bataan Death March, 1942 (4:50-5:33). An Imperial Japanese aircraft takes off (actual film) and bombs it (5:34-5:56). Japanese Bombs being put together, loaded into guns, and fired; then their devastating effects (5:57-7:11). Americans hid in tunnels for protection and medical treatment (7:12-7:22). May 6, 1942, Corregidor fell (7:23-7:47). Japanese General Homma and General Wainwright at surrender (7:48-8:33). Japanese rule in Manila (8:37-10:04). Japanese hand out propaganda (10:22-11:19) and show solidarity with the people through parades (11:20-12:28). Views of prison camps (12:29-13:09). President Roosevelt and General MacArthur at the Honolulu Conference, 1944. Next strike Philippines (13:17-13:40). Map of Philippines shows the takeover plan (13:41-13:58). Battle ship war scenes with MacArthur, and amphibious landing craft (13:59-14:57). MacArthur and his troops walk ashore at Corregidor (14:58-15:20). American air attacks on the Japanese (15:21-16:12). Welcoming of American troops landing in the Philippines (16:13-16:35). Jungle fighting (16:36-16:54). War scenes with anti-aircraft guns (17:13-17:25). January 30, 1945, the American Prisoners are liberated. Views of the prisoners (17:26-18:03). Manila is liberated. War scenes as that happened (18:04-19:49). The burning city and the returning people (19:50-20:54). MacArthur returns to Corregidor and speaks to the people (21:05-21:30). The American flag is raised, but on July 4, 1946, the Philippines are declared a free nation and the Filipino flag is raised (21:31-22:40).

This was worth watching as I had been doing research on my paternal grandfather who was born in the town of San Roque (now part of Cavite City) near Manila. It's no surprise that the Filipinos loved the United States especially given that my great-grandfather fought in the Philippine Revolution and liked the U.S. This influenced my grandpa to join the U.S. Navy in 1920 and become a U.S. Citizen in 1938. Though my grandpa enjoyed being a musician in the Navy, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor the day it was attacked on December 7, 1941. Even though he survived because he was at mass that day, things gotten worse for grandpa because it would only be a short time until his parents were killed in the bombing by the Japanese. Watching this really shows just the agony and pain my grandpa had to deal with because of the deaths of my great-grandparents. Even to this day it is really hard to do genealogical research on his part of my family probably due to how much records must have been destroyed during World War II and how hard it must have been for the Philippines, especially in both Manila and Cavite City to recover from Japanese occupation. 🇵🇭🇺🇲

Thank you for posting this. Imperialism is OPPRESSIVE. The Filipinos have suffered so much under the tyranny of these foreign powers. The Americans because of their Christian beliefs were a breath of freedom to the natives. Macarthur and thousands of Americans and Filipino soldiers have died for this freedom. DO NOT LET CHINA REPEAT WHAT THE JAPANESE DID TO THE PHILIPPINES IN 1941! FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO LIVE AND PROTECT YOUR TERRITORIAL DOMAIN. Let there be not a repeat of history - - PRAY that God would always be on your side and that the United States will make the right move and decisions in the South China Sea Conflict!

The B17s and many of the P40s went airborn immediately after news of the Pearl Harbor attack. Several hours later McArthur received permission to conduct bombing of the airfields on Formosa (Taiwan). The planes landed and the B17s were being refueled and loaded with bombs while the air crews received their briefings during breakfast. This is when the Japanese attacked. They should have attacked several hours earlier, but after the war researchers dug through the Japanese log books and discovered there had been bad fog over Formosa that morning. The attack had to be delayed several hours.

My school, a Catholic school managed by the American Christian Brothers, is located behind the baseball stadium, separated only by a creek. I used to pass by this stadium on foot as a kid for many years on my way to school not knowing that many Japanese soldiers and some Americans were killed inside that stadium. Today, across the stadium is the Century Park Sheraton hotel and a new shopping mall is currently being constructed. The stadium was renovated and is still being used to this day.

@Christopher Parco Why do Filipinos always proclaim Marcos as the best president ever? He wasn't. He was corrupt and evil. He and his wife are the reason why the Philippines got left behind by your now rich Asian neighbors. Also the Philippines still sucked after colonial rule, only, during colonial rule, the suckiness was hidden behind a facade of nice buildings. Many years after independence, there was still a lot of bombed out buildings that lingered about and many of the nice buildings before the war were either never rebuilt or were inferior to their original designs. Oh and even back then, there was also a lot of poverty and corruption. This is based on a story of some old Filipino lady I read.
@cashewnuttel9054
@cashewnuttel9054 3 года назад
@Christopher Parco Also the sad reality is that Filipinos cannot rule themselves. The best course of action for the country is to be run by China. For as long as Filipinos rule themselves, their suffering will never end.

I wish these lost parts of history, such as this one, will be included in the education curriculum of kids of this era so that they learn from them and do everything they can to avoid such atrocities from ever happening again. I'm afraid to see that the tensions of the year 2022 between Taiwan and China, Ukraine and Russia, China and the US, are hinting at another World War that no one will benefit from. Not sure, if the current generation will have the same fortitude to survive a similar war as WWII their mindsets are far from that of the Greatest Generation, priorities are mostly misaligned. Sad, truly.

@@PandaMusic1674 No, the reason why FDR invaded the Philippines rather than Formosa was because it was more strategic, America could cut off Japan's oil supply as well as be able to establish complete air superiority and domination of Southeast Asia, and because the Japanese presence in the Philippines was too strong, if they decided the invade Formosa, the Japanese forces in the Philippines could easily harass the American invasion of either the Japanese home islands or any other land north of the Philippines. And also, because FDR wanted to liberate the Philippines as quickly as possible because the deadline for the Tydings-Mcduffie Act was approaching quickly, thats why he needed to liberate the Philippines as soon as possible.

Long before the Philippines, we the people of Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, Sulu & Sabah have enjoyed FREEDOM and liberty long before the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan in March 1521, British in 1735, Americans in 1898 and Japanese in 1941. We have long been trading jewelry made of gold, silver & precious stones; agriculture produce; pots & plates; textiles & clothes; and, exchanging cultural practices with various Asian countries which similarly enjoyed freedom & liberty. Long before the 400 years of colonizations by foreign powers and adoption of Philippines as the name of the country, we have been independent, spoke more than100 languages, written in our own alphabeth ---- Baybayin and had its own currencies for trading. We as a people by any name of the country fought and regained its freedom twice in 1898 and 1946. Read history books.

It’s ironic that in WW2 Americans and Filipinos were fighting together to defeat a common enemy but just 50 years prior the US bought and colonized the country after defeating Spain and treated the Filipinos unfairly. The Philippine American War is rarely taught in depth in American public schools (for obvious reasons). The history is pretty similar to Japanese colonialism of Korea. Many Americans forget about this or are simply unaware and uneducated. I’m curious how the American Philippine relation is taught in the Philippines. I would like to hear your opinions on this if any Filipinos are reading this.

I've been to China a few times and love the country. They were very friendly towards me, even the police. Just a shame not many can speak English. I hold no grudge against any country. That was then, this is now. I've never been to Europe even I have Spanish, Italian and Irish ancestors. I speak Spanish but only understand a little Italian. I could never learn Tagalog.
