It's not WW2, it's not the colonizers, its not the corrupt politicians... It's the Filipino value. Long gone with the glory that is Philippines... We have to realize that Pinoy "Pride" is crushing our society. As a young professional, I realized Philippines is the worst place for an intellectual to be born in because Filipinos do not reward excellence, they denounce it because on their innate stubbornness.. Brain Drain is not an issue, in fact, it was never an issue. It was their superiority complex. They seek recognition, and yet they don't work for it. They live a lifestyle they can't afford. They demand change and yet they defy it. And its always gonna' be someone else's fault. Not theirs.

1930s was the Golden Era of the Philippines. Manila along with Shanghai managed to evade the ravages of the Depression and thrived. With the rising nationalism and the promise of independence came pride and Filipinos wanted to compete and show it to the world. Men and women dressed to the nines. Filipino high end society flourished. Manila had a distinguished cafe culture. Commonwealth infrastructure projects were grand and elegant. It was the height of Philippine society. Then WWII came....

Generally, they still are very formal and polite in speech. They'll cut you off in traffic, step in front of you when you're in line, and be rude in many other ways, but they're quite polite in speech!
@TheSteveMol
@TheSteveMol 5 лет назад
@Lt. Pyukumuku No, not at all. I speak from a YEARS of personal experience. Filipinos don't INTEND to be rude, but their actions usually are in these areas. 1) Try to place an order at Jollibee. If you give more than two inches of space between yourself and the persons in front of you, someone will cut in line. 2) Ask PLDT to repair their service. If they take more than a month to restore your service, try to skip paying your bill citing the idea that they should provide service before you pay even more. They'll insist that you pay every month until they fix the service - then they'll give you a credit for the MONTHS of time without service. These are just two recurrent examples of how their ACTIONS are rude. All the while, they will be extremely polite and apologetic.

My wife is a Filipina so I have visited there 3 times over the last ten years. Though her family lives a couple of hours outside Metro Manila we have spent a fair amount of time there . It is humongous and a little overwhelming but there is a certain vibrant energy there,wealth,poverty,new and old everything existing side by side.So many restaurants! Obviously you have to be street smart and use common sense esp. when you are a foreigner but hat goes for any big city. In my opinion the Philippines is on the way up-there is a lot of industry and a lot of wealth moving in . Obviously there are still significant problems with corruption(like every country) and infastructure,brain drain- but these can be overcome. The Philippines has a MASSIVE advantage over other SE Asian countries in that most people are pretty well educated and speak and understand English. Maybe I'm wrong about this but it seems to me like even poorer people manage to send their kids to school.

Paul M. Your wrong, kids may go to school but most do not even have a pencil. Further many schools do not even have books. Teachers go to seminars to learn how to be creative in their teaching. English is taught as at one time the Philippines was an American territory, the Filipinos are still today fiercely loyal to Americans. It is one of the few educational values they receive however. Its a shame people who have wives from the area are so ignorant as to what it is actually like. This is not an insult, just an observation from many Foreigners in your shoes.

Manila can regain its grandeur but with political will: limit the businesses setup there like factories, set it up like school and government zone only with museums around.the rest stay out of Manila.i can say this well because I am not from Manila and many people go to find work there and that brings us back to the politicians who allow it so businesses set up there will attract provincial folks and endure cramped accommodation,traffic,pollution for the taxes these businesses pay and politicians want to play with. If Manila will have fewer people how much is the budget proposal for politicians to play in that area? Even the former president ran for Manila city mayor. The port of manila is a big customs area and juicy place for salivating politicians.

Never too late to rebuild, redevelop and restore. We shouldn't blame World War II nor the Spaniards, Japanese or the Americans. If Warsaw was able to reconstruct, why not Manila? Nobody to blame but ourselves. Reparations (money/materials/manpower) poured into the Philippines right after the war with the Burnham Plan intact for us to follow but we Filipinos chose the selfish path. But never lose hope. I still think Manila will someday become "the Queen of the Pacific"...again :)

Warsaw was able to restore it’s old buildings because they were given money as reparations for damages while we were left to wallow in ruins made by the Americans and the Japanese. Intramuros wasn’t restored properly and Imelda made a terribly botched job of restoring it.
