Thank you so much for watching this video, this is soo long because I tried to answer as many questions as I could and I still had to leave out some. It’s also my first ever talking video, please have some patience while I practice this! ^^"
In this video I’m answering questions you sent me on Instagram, in relation to being a freelance illustrator and art in general. Feel free to leave questions in the comments that I didn‘t answer, or if there are certain topics you would like to know more of.
A lot of topics like how to find clients and how to find your style could use their own video or blog post, I’ll think about that. Also please note that these are only my personal experiences, there’s no exact blueprint to follow in terms of becoming an illustrator, there are as many paths as there are illustrators.
Love, and thanks so much for your support! And I hope you and your loved ones are all well and healthy… Stay safe my friends!

Great information on many of the things we deal with as illustrators! I liked what you said about working on projects that aren't your dream projects. I get these, too! Sometimes it's really hard to get started on these types of projects and I have a little trick that helps. I just do something really really tiny on the project. Like maybe just look at a pdf they sent, or research something about the project. I only spend like 5 minutes doing this, then I stop and take off the rest of the day! The next morning it's easier to get moving and start really working on the project because it's like I've already "started" it the day before. Even though I hardly did anything, it gets my head thinking about moving it forward. Somehow this is a game changer for me.

Oh yes, for some reason it’s also easier for me to just spend the first day wrapping my head around the project and imagining the things that need to be done, but not start work. The next day it’ll all be clearer somehow. :)

@@SusannHoffmann On the other side, sometimes i get a project and might not even have all the info yet and I just can't wait to get started! CGI is like virtually building stuff and guess for me it's fun building shapes, even if they are just on the computer screen. Well, I did get some proofs off to a client today so that's positive. :)

When you talked about the style question I felt sooo connected to that. It’s something that I began to found after I stopped looking for it really. And lots of practice! But the frustration of not fitting into the image of illustrators and artists you admire is still there for me😅

Thank you for this video, I think your english is wonderful! You probably already know this, but Procreate will tell you how long it took you to work on a project and even how many brush strokes! You can find it under your 'canvas information' under 'statistics'. This might help you with your estimates of how long a drawing takes 😊

I had the same problem with chairs, I got too drawn by the aesthetics. But I got this year the LÅNGFJÄLL from Ikea and my back is much better, and you can choose between different color combinations.

I like patreon for who creators who are focus on educating and add valuable posts or tutorials as the rewards. Like how Slew has live paint sessions each week centered around oil painting. I also like getting limited edition patreon printers or stickers from artists I like. Ultimately I think you have to decide if it’s something you want to do, since you are in Germany shipping physical rewards to people is very costly from my understanding.
@SusannHoffmann

That's true, I would probably center on educational stuff or "peeks behind the scenes" and more personal content too. I personally like the "original" idea of Patreon (people supporting artists for what they were already doing instead of having them do other things ON TOP to make Patrons happy). Personally I just support artists because I want them to have more time to do what I like to see from them and just support them, and I've seen so many artists burning themselves out on Patreon and then stop doing it altogether. So I'd rather offer less super special content and accept that only very few people will support, than make it another job on top of everything else if you know what I mean. But I'd love to have it like a blog too where I can share things I've learnt in the past, things I can't or don't want to share with the whole world, stuff like this. :) Maybe I'll try and see if I can start building a bit of content there without actually going public first..to see how it goes.

Procreate will actually allow more layers if you create the canvas yourself..I just never use all I can use. I mean I have used up to 40. But sometimes it says I can do a hundred or hundreds. It depends on dpi and size. I also name my layers and people act like that is nuts but I hate getting confused. Sometimes the preview pic is not enough to tell what layer you are selecting!

So happy that I found you! I am also from Hamburg. Is it hard to find jobs as an illustrator in Germany? Cuz I Want to be an fulltime illustrator but at the same time staying in my love city :( btw. Your video was super informative! Thank you 🙏. And your English is better than mine xD

Oh no I seem to have missed your comment! 🙈 Nowadays it's possible to get jobs from all over the world so it basically doesn't matter where you live. 😊 You are usually working as a freelancer and get hired for projects (some go on for a few days, others can keep you occupied for months).

Thank you so much Susann for your advice! I follow your instagram account too. I think you are always so helpful especially when it comes to sharing your own experience and the tools you use. I just want to ask you what kink of work you showed to book publishers or potential clients before you even had your first official illustration job? Were they your student or personal projects? Is it even professional to show work that aren't really "work" - if you know what I mean. Thank you:):)

Ohh thank you so much!! Yes, in the beginning I was only showing student and personal work, that is completely normal!! 😊 Maybe I could make a video showing my first portfolios and what it now looks like (cause there's still a lot of personal work in there). 😊
