I am a TV aerial & satellite dish installer and I have a large customer base spanning 13yrs. Not a single customer has asked me about Freely as of this comment. Yes, i will probably be installing less aerials & dishes moving forward, but I am sure that there will be a natural shift toward increased numbers of TV set ups, in-home WiFi coverage and data cabling to get this service up and running in people's homes. TV aerials will still be required to keep TV's loaded with the most cannels possible. With that in mind, will people ensure that the next TV that they buy has to have Freely? Most probably not. They will buy a set that is the best that they can afford. Picture quality and the "badge" of a TV seems to be what people go for, and I can't see people moving away from brand loyalty. A lot of homes have multiple TV's. This is going to be a slow burner...

Not a chance I would fork out for replacement equipment even if they turned off the transmitters today. We need to be moving away from the disposable market. TV's used to last at least 4 - 5 years, and many a lot longer. Now the idea seems to be moving towards the mobile phone model where you are expected to buy the latest thing at least once a year. I will never purchase a TV based on "smart" functions, when they rapidly become obsolete within a few years.

Within 5years there will be no more satellite dishes or TV aerials. Best bet would be to start retraining now. Don't be "Blockbuster"
@AshfordMTB
@AshfordMTB 2 месяца назад
@@harwoods11 They will still have a place going forward. I have even had customers have a sky dish reinstalled as they can't use sky glass properly with their broadband connection. When it comes to area broadband outages, people would be left with no TV whatsoever. I had a job where a BT pole had been knocked down after a truck ploughed into it. Again a streaming only customer had nothing for a week until I installed an aerial for them. Foreign satellite TV will not be affected whatsoever. I think the fear of nothing will keep aerials and dishes running for way longer than 5 years. Like I say, there will be a gradual shift in job type for me. It won't be going dark in 5 years like someone hitting a switch. The reduction of TV aerials & dishes will go hand in hand with the increase of broadband resilience. I do also have plenty of other services that will carry me to retirement, and others that I can introduce if need be.

The TV of a neighbour was getting poor signal and missing channels. The dropping of standard BBC channels for HD on satellite meant retuning but these came and went. It took some effort to get them to call out an aerial installer to check the dish and position. He suggested that instead of replacing the LNB to install a Freeview aerial. He used part of the satellite dish cable and chopped off the connectors and retuned to Freeview. So only 7 HD channels, not ITV2,3,4. I don't know why this was chosen and not simply fixing the existing dish. My neighbour did not understand the difference or distinction and was already stressed out by the changes the BBC made and not being able to find her regional programmes. I thought it pointless complaining or making more fuss if Freely removes all channels from Freeview and Freesat in a few months. Most people do not know that Freesat is an option. They know Sky (pay for the service), Cable/Virgin and TV aerial (Freeview).. Even with the press and notices they will have no idea about Freely. If Freely is only available on 2024 released TVs with smart interface and the Freely app or yet another desktop box they are not going to know about it until they are told there are no channels on Freeview when it is shut down.
@geraldmcmullon2465
@geraldmcmullon2465 2 месяца назад
@@michaelmcdonald2348 In 2024 we are seeing BBC closing standard TV regional programmes needing to retune to get them on the HD version but you need a TV that can receive the HD signals. My 1080p 49" screen does not and has no smart feature interface with apps. I have been using a computer to get iPlayer and an HD PCI card to get live broadcasts to record for later viewing of channels not on free streaming services of their own. Many devices now come with a mobile phone app. One less remote needed but some require a current, recent and still under service updates of the Android or iOS. This means a phone under 4 years old. Not everyone is on a contract with a new phone every three years. Forced to get a new phone to continue to use the device is not a free update. When the device is no longer getting updates soon you can't use it as the newer phone can't install the old app, if that is, you can still find the older app to install. It used to be that an old computer (tablet device) would continue to do what it did just with no bug fixes or new features. Now perfectly good equipment needs interest based services and the app, program and internal software all have to have updates. Portable, battery powered devices have sealed in batteries. So after 500 to 1000 recharges you can not replace the battery and have to buy a new device. That means razors, toothbrush, mobile phone, tablet, laptop, watches and even torches. Being rechargeable the cost of these devices has also risen. The electronic waste problems becomes even worse. Microsoft is pushing Windows 11 and Windows 12 isn't far off launch. Whilst 10 years seems a reasonable time to change the operating system they are now forcing people to also buy new hardware for "security" feature. Not only is Windows 11 and 12 only able to run on certain newer processors and motherboards they are updating Windows 10 to fail to run on computers with "unsupported" processors. Computers, laptops, tables, mobiles phones have been more than good enough for most people's use for many years which is too long for the manufacturers who now look to software to brick older equipment not just that updates don't work older apps can not be loaded onto a new phone/computer and you have to buy everything new.

Freely is the first step to delivering a high quality viewing experience. Broadcasting over the air or satellite is expensive and the airwaves are limited or better used for 6G so this offers an easier way to get better quality TV channels without disruption to the millions of existing TVs “No more retunes” Once DVB-I gets out of trials and gets adopted there will be a shift in the industry. Meta Data may still be sent OTA for satellite services as it’s a great way to secure subscriptions until Ci+ USB is adopted. The ISP’s won’t lose out as Targeted advertising will be adopted and revenue shares will be available and ISPs will launch services to the giant panel that used to be called a TV. Freely is an Operator Ap its truly Leading edge technology it can be updated seamlessly, so lots of possibilities. You can also “uninstall it” if you want to use satellite no problem and just relaunch the App in a few seconds. But for most people being able to have a Tv that doesn’t need a Co-Axial cable in the UK has taken 91 years…

S4C is the channel/programme number four licence. 'channel 4' has always been on programme number 8 [or 7] originally on analogue TV 'channel 4' was not available in Wales, all masts carried S4C. This changed when Freeview launched in the early 2000s & as it's not a Wales' public service broadcaster, it's further down the list. 'Channel 4' was launched for Northern Ireland, Scotland, England.

so are they expecting that in the near future: The internet will become totally reliable with no downtime, or that a back up service will be available. And that a basic internet service adequate to provide TV services will be offered completely free to everyone? If not, then this is not an upgrade or anything positive! Why are people being conditioned to pay for everything that they used to get either free or a one off payment? People readily accepting paying over and over again for music or films they will never own a copy of? This isn't a positive in any way, it will further shut out people who dont have the means to pay. Public service TV should be for everyone.

I expect one reason there isn't an app at the present time is due to Freely using the TV aerial to pull in additional channels to the Freely TV Guide. This probably requires specific support from the TV manufacturer to allow Freely to access the TV's aerial and tuner. Thus you will only see Freely being bundled with new TVs for early adopter brands, like Hisense, in the first year or two. With such a limited number of channels at launch there probably isn't much point having a Freely app at this stage in the role out. All the Freely channels available at launch are all available via their own existing catch-up apps and provide the ability to catch up or watch live TV (BBC and ITV). As more channels migrate to Freely in the future and Freely's ability to use a TV's aerial is removed, you may well see a Freely App introduced for each major TV OS. But I suspect an app will be a few years away.

The reason it's not an app is that you can switch off location features and make it harder for the license to gether evidence of what you watch. This new system is funded by the BBC to check up on you. If you don't have a license and you watch ANYTHING on FREELY you will be made to buy a license.

Freely is an idiotic idea. They want to replace a system which is completely self sufficient to one that requires a separate system to function. They are adding more possible failure points such as if the internet goes down you lose your service. Also if you have multiple people using the internet you could end up with dropouts as multiple devices compete for the available bandwidth. There is also the fact that internet is a paid service so it will make it so that those without an internet connection would no longer have access to free TV services. They are trying to push too quickly. In order for this to work you need to first make sure that the infrastructure required is actually capable across everywhere with good redundancy.

Freely is not an idiotic idea. I have no means to connect an aerial or dish. I would love Freely so I can get that normal TV like experience. This video is not very well informed. This service is to work alongside Freeview not replace it. It's to encourage young people who maybe only watch internet TV to watch more free to air tv. Freeview play and Freeview are not the same thing. Freeview play is an app that collates on demand video for core channels, makes no sense to have it alongside freely. There is no plan to switch off Freeview signals, will they propose this eventually? Maybe but I doubt it will happen for decades, too many people regularly use it.

But any internet device (desktop, laptop, tablet) should be able to pick up the services like BBC iPlayer and ITV X. Is Freely a replacement for standalone per-channel streaming apps? Or is it just something you can use if you want to?
@L1RW
@L1RW 2 месяца назад
It works by signing in to the streaming services. Eg, you sign into BBC iPlayer and ITV X, so the channels appear in the EPG. So BBC 1 will be number 1, BBC Two number 2 and ITV at number 3 etc. However, if you have a smart tv/stick etc, you can already stream the channels. Freely streamlines this, by placing the channels on the streaming services, into an EPG. So you don't have to keep switching streaming services, to change channel.

I mean my LG TV does over the air updates so I'm not sure why they wouldn't just let most smart TV manufacturers who have firmware update options upgrade the software to Freely. I'm sure from a hardware standpoint it's nothing different or new and it is simply a software change/thing. The lack of a software update for modern smart TV's is a bit silly and shows this is a money grabbing initative in some ways too.
@geraldmcmullon2465

There have been some hardware updates to televisions. The screen technology has also changed. For most people those differences come when eventually they get a new TV but are not enough for them to need or want a new TV. One way around is to move some of the electronics into a separate unit. Modular TVs existed in the 80s - split speakers and audio from screen and receiver box. A hub, slot in card (like PC cards) could extend the life of the media devices so you are not forced to make a complete change every 5 years like we have to do with mobile phones as support lasts for only a couple of years and new need a new phone (new operating system) just to run the app to switch on your app enabled smart device.

I have Sky Stream and it's buggy as hell but getting everything over internet is a big thing for me because I'm in a bad Freeview reception area and my flat's rooftop communal satellite dish gives pretty flaky Freesat reception so getting free of those delivery methods is the key attraction but if Sky doesn't improve the software then I'm definitely looking to switch once my 18 month lock-in is over. I was with Virgin once and I won't go back there so unless Freely releases a stand-alone box EE TV will be my only (legal) option (I think?) but it does look a decent one if I am willing to change broadband supplier as well - or if EE drops the requirement to also get broadband from them in order to sign up to the TV service.

I'm guessing that as a Free service Freely might not want to introduce a Freely billing infrastructure just for that but maybe if it had slots in the EPG to integrate extra channels and the ability to interface with NowTV backend to stream them of course it could get some extra revenue via referral/reseller kickbacks for people who signed up directly with NowTV and then accessed the channels via a Freely system. I assume that there is some precedent for this already with companies like like EE (TV) and Virgin Media getting some revenue (kick backs) from NowTV although in their cases the kickback would probably be bigger because EE and Virgin are handling the billing but some sort of more modest referral fee paid by Now TV to Freely would seem appropriate to expand Now TVs footprint and it would give Freely customers who are willing to pay the option to add a few Sky channels to their line-up. I would probably take that option if it was reasonably priced.

Where is the Android app for all of us that use the likes of Firesticks or Nvidia Shields or Android capable TVs? lets just force everyone to buy a new TV eh? Probably a good idea for Freely to maybe get on releasing an APP sooner rather than later because some clever person will probably find a way to pull the app off those TVs that ship with it so it can be modified to be used on other devices.

I don't have a television receiver. I use a Freesat and Freeview PCI card in a media PC. I now only access BBC programmes from iPlayer and BBC Sounds. Having all the other channels available from one program interface would be idea. Why buy a TV where you have to have old technology that is going to be useless in just a few years? Will Freely aim to replace ITV X and iPlayer? Costly to run two internet based systems.

It's one of those things that because it requires a new TV and a specific one at that most people won't be using it for a very long time. It really needs freeview boxes that will be coming out to also support it so those who have TVs that don't natively have access to it can get it. I'm all for a freeview service that is streamed due to more channels being HD by default and removing the picture breaks up to to poor weather or even being too sunny but if I have to spend hundreds on a brand new TV for that then I will skip it until one of the ones I recently brought stops working.

Freely has missed a massive opportunity at launch. Live and on-demand ‘apps’ that can be installed on existing tv’s and streaming boxes (Fire, Apple TV etc) from BBC, itv, Channel 4 and 5 already exist. Bringing those existing, separate apps into a single Freely app would make far more sense. Allowing people with existing equipment to use the new service. I don’t think most people will ditch their existing tv’s, unless they are on the market for a new one, just to get Freely, especially as it has very limited streaming and still requires an arial (so essentially much the same as Freeview / Freeview Play).

As part of the conditions laid out I took down my aerial and detuned my sets, removing the epg just in case. I also consciously avoid I player, in order to play a straight game. Now with future sets with freely, does this mean that with the WiFi on, which I.use for itvx, you tube and Netflix, I will get forced access to live TV (thus making me illegal by default? Thus, I will be robbed of you tube and other catchup apps without getting live TV chucked in as well and having to pay? I shall not be happy if that's the case.

I think your incorrect when you say they want to get everyone off freeview as quick as possible - this is a long term, natural transition that needs to happen at a sensible pace. Just as when freeview launched, and to a degree Youview, people are not going to just bin everything and buy freely stuff. They will naturally move over to it when the life cycle of their existing equipment expires. First step is to get as much equipment out there with it in as possible (which is probably why the launch hasn't been a massive event as retailers don't have much of the kit yet), then over time people will naturally migrate. As for switching off transmitters, that wont be for at least another 8 to 10 years I would think, the advantage between moving from Freeview to Freely is no where near as compelling as the move was from analoge to digital. Also the UK's full fibre network needs to be virtually completed before any real transmitter switch off can occur - I have 5 TV's in my house, Imagine if all of those are streaming live TV at a time, the experiance is gonna be pretty crap without a decent full fibre connection.

The BBC removed regional programmes from standard definition BBC One and then closed down all standard definition versions of all their channels. To see BBC on Freesat you must have a receiver that can get HD channels. Many people have 1080p screen that only have standard 720x576 receivers. After 20 years Freeview is still limited to 7 HD channels. Freesat has 20. Freesat has lost from the install and viewing guide channels like GREAT TV. The cost of Freeview and Freesat have risen and to deliver over the internet costs have fallen. Other channels will move from these services but ought to be available via Freely through the single interface and also enabling all the channels to be at least 1920x1080. Some of the channels with 504x576 enlarged to 4K is so outdated. .

Why haven't they had the sense to have it in an app that can be added by anyone, on Fire Stick, PS4, PS5, Xbox, Android boxes, Android phones, IPhones/IPads etc, not having to buy specific TVs a la Sky Glass, also helping to keep it as closed off as possible so you have no prospects of recording etc, this approach deserves to fail! It doesn't even offer anything beyond what is available already!

BT wants to me to unplug my old copper line phone for VOIP, so if the broadband goes down, or I get a power cut, won't be able to call the emergency services (unless I pay extra for a mobile phone contract I may not want because of the cost of living crisis making me tighten my belt)

So everyone will have to pay for internet access, great or rather grate. Will this be available on phones? Some people might not be able to afford broadband so their phone is their only option. The landline phones are now internet based, so no longer to be relied on in case of various environmental issues, it shifts the cost for the infrastructure onto the state so one can understand why the privatised companies pushed for this. Apparently we 'have to move on and go forward' but there seems to be a lack of planning or even forethought regarding the direction. Fortunately radio remains available and the content is generally rather better than the TV. I am sceptical, I remember reading E M Fortser's 'The Machine Stops' at school and it has coloured my view of technology ever since.

@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews If you use Freely to watch any scheduled channel at the exact moment that it is actually being broadcast then you will need a licence. If you use Freely to access any BBCiplayer content on-demand then you will need a licence. In theory if you only use Freely to watch soley on-demand programming from exclusively non-BBC broadcasters then as the law stands you do not need a licence. The difficulty will be that if the licence enforcement people visit you and you make the mistake of letting them in, then currently the onus will be on you to prove that just because you have a set capable of receiving live television and iPlayer content it doesn't mean you actually ever watch such (and it's not clear if Freely TV's will be storing your viewing history as they go like a PC or mobile would), but then again the same issue now exists with all internet-connected devices able to display video content, which didn't exist when that part of the tv licence law was written so very long ago, so parliament will almost certainly have to debate whether to change this latter point in some way if they decide to continue with the tv licence after the next licence cycle.

The big difference is that Freely will take at lest 20 or 30 years to replace Freeview because of the cost of high quality broadband internet, the availability of said internet in certain parts of the UK, and the fact that many poor and lower working class individuals don’t have access to high quality broadband internet and will only get it when the government helps cover the cost of said internet. The United States had such a programme until it expired earlier this year and it hasn’t been renewed as of yet. So it’s going to take a very long time before Freeview ends.
