This is an excellent starter video. I downloaded the Freemind software and just stared and thought... where do I start? This tutorial answers that question.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was getting very frustrated trying to figure this out, but your instructions were so simple!! I watched a different tutorial b4 yours and was even more confused. If you are not a teacher, you should be - you have such a soothing voice :)
Thank you, I'm pleased its helping you. I love that people have created free software that can help others unleash more of their potential more efficiently. Making this tutorial to help people use it is the least I can do as a token of my appreciation to the software developers who've created it.
Was intimidated by the length of the video(Was first looking for some quick videos to watch but any I did find didnt give me enough info on how to do much apart from making nodes), but he was rather calming and even with Freemind seeming rather complicated, he made it rather easy to understand!
I started "mind mapping" a document for diagnosing an engine idle issue. Using the Linux version of Freemind. I found the note attachments very slow. BUT, I think documenting ideas using a graphical editor like this is interesting both in paper form and especially for online documents. Decades ago I was a Technical Writer at AT&T where we used a form of documenting called "Information Mapping". Wished we had access to a tool like Freemind back then.
Thanks I've been using it since 2006 . This helped give me some useful functionality that I havent used. Really good. You mention the more advanced features could you enlighten me as to what capability it has? I'm a big advocate for this program. Your video was good. Thanks again.
Thanks. Very helpful. Can you explain why some branches I can independently move freely (as at 3:20 in the vid), whilst others make other branches all move at the same time?
thanks its a good tutorial. onlu feedback id give is it would have been nice to have some real world examples of why you would use some of the functions. for example the flasher at the moment i cannot see why i would use. especially when it only flashes when selected.
Does anyone know of the mind-mapping (not sure if software) where it lets you zoom into the "nodes" and you click or press space and it takes you to the next one and then the next one and so forth? my teacher showed us this a long time ago but I cant seem to find it
Great video. In this video you created what I call a map. I would like a separate just like it on the same page so I can connect some of their ends together. How can I do that?
Thanks so much. Can you tell me one thing? How do I create an internal page when a node becomes so complex it can carry an entire mindmap of its own? I know its a function but cannot work out how to do this...
+MCr33py also, you can just click a node and then click an icon from the selection on the far left-hand side of the screen instead of searching through the menu system.
Very lucid and easy to follow. Can you re-arrange the branches from the main bubble so they are equidistant instead of being in 2 bunches? Can you add clip-art or photos for decoration (not in a node)? Can you 'highlight' a branch with a coloured zone-cloud round it? Thanks in advance.
+Genie Kate Thanks, Sorry I cant be of help with these questions as its a long time now since I've used Freemind. I use Freeplane instead which is an offshoot piece of software. You could ask on the Freemind forums, the link is below the video.
hob976 Hi, I use Freeplane now which is an offshoot of freemind so I don't remember the exact settings anymore. If you use the 'Automatic Layout' option shown in the video it should do this for you. Alternatively if you right click on a node you should have options to change the branch thickness etc.
Is there anyway that you can move nodes around once you have the map finished? the mind map puts the noes up left then right, but I want to start at the top and move aruond in a circle so that I can show a flow from one step to the next???
+Deirdre Campion You move a node by selecting it then holding down the CTRL key and clicking the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the node up or down. You can also drag a node to the opposite side of your mind map by holding the left mouse button down over the selected node and dragging it.
***** I just had a quick look at a tutorial for Freeplane, it looks pretty similar to this (I only glanced at it), why did you start using that over freemind?
