Freesia Flowers - How to Grow and Multiply!

Freesias are one of my favorite flower scents! If I plant them in the fall - they will bloom in February. Plant them in good quality soil and they will reward you with thick stalks of gorgeous flowers & create little bulbs that will turn into future flowers. Wait for the flowers to go to seed - and in the spring - plant those seedlings and you will get more flowers. :)
They come in a variety of colors too - purple, pinks, whites, orange & yellow. When I was a youngster my mother had heirloom freesia bulbs growing in our front yard. When I bought my first house - I took some of her bulbs and planted them in my yard. Unfortunately, those bulbs did not survive the move to my latest house. The old fashion freesia bulbs are amazing but very hard to find. None the less, the bulbs you find in the nurseries are still great and I encourage you to have some of these in your garden. You will not be sorry! :)

I never even knew that freesias do set seed. But I did see swollen bases of the flowers suggesting fruit is setting seed. Your video clarified this. Thankyou for your efforts.

Yes I should have mentioned I'm in New Zealand:-) :-) Cool one, Thank you ever so much! I've never seen seeds on a bulbed plant before, I can't help from picking them normally, but finding seeds in those funny nut looking things was amazing!! There are in a paper bag waiting for spring! :-) Your video and comments are very helpful;-) Cheers very, Lala :-)

Hello New Zealand!!! That's so cool!!! I like that I can save the seeds - especially from the pink ones because those are hard to find in the stores. I also grow Amarylis bulbs and this past season, I cross pollinated them - saved their seeds and planted them. They take about 3-4 years before they will grow a flower - but that's another REALLY expensive bulb for the US it's about $5-7.

One of my fave flowers, beautiful scent. I'm new to gardening, is it advisable to mix some well rotted manure in with the compost when planting the corms/bulbs in a container and what do you feed them, if anything? Thanks :-)
@LifeAfter40IsGood
@LifeAfter40IsGood 8 лет назад
I don't use fertilizer. Just use good potting soil - most of the potting soils on the market these days have stuff like worm castings (I think that's the best fertilizer). I am in the process of gopher proofing my cinder block plot in @ the community garden because gophers discovered the freesia bulbs - Eeeek! So I have to dig out the soil in the each hole and insert a metal grate at the bottom. The upside - there are TONS of bulbs in these holes and earthworms!! YAY! I think I might just do a video on this...another way to get more freesias.

Bhavita Toliya - They can flop over, especially when they bloom. I tend to plant in planters.
@Gargamel19

Do you ever put these in your own soil and allow them to naturalize? I currently just planted some (im in san diego CA) and i usually start things in pots and once they take off i like to transplant them into my front/back yard. I have a sandy, almost combination clayish sort of soil and dont know if they like that? I typically mist all my plants. Once in the morning, and again at night on a schedule but i dont know how finicky these little guys are about water once they take off? Nothing came on the instructions for mature watering and care. Im in a "trial and error" sort of phase right now. TIA for any advice, or tips!
@LifeAfter40IsGood
@LifeAfter40IsGood 6 лет назад
Dara Lushine - they aren’t too picky and will bloom for you with not too much effort. I don’t think you need to mist them. I water daily if it’s hot and dry and it’s in a container. Otherwise I just water as needed. They will multiply well though if you plant in richly nutrient soil. Like potting mix or good composted soil. 😊 I gave my friend some bulbs and he planted them in his plot at the Community Garden, he doesn’t do much tending to them and they are now a nice mass of freesias!
@LifeAfter40IsGood
@LifeAfter40IsGood 6 лет назад
I tend to plant these now in pots because they don’t flop over due to the weight of the buds and my gardeners don’t accidentally toss out the bulbs when they clean up the dying off leaves. They will naturalized very well.

Where do you get that bubble? It is necessary to buy it or you can get it directly from the fresia plant?
@LifeAfter40IsGood
@LifeAfter40IsGood Год назад
By ‘bubble’ are you referring to the little growth on the bottom of the bulb? If so, it’ll just form sometimes on the bulb when you are growing them. If you plant in rich nutrient soil & water + sun you’ll get a healthy freesia. If that’s not the bubble you’re referring to please tell me what the video timestamp is and I’ll relook at the video and answer your question 😊

@@LifeAfter40IsGood Thank you so much for have answered me 🥰 My question was about the bulb itself that you showed at minute 0:36 (sorry, didn´t know how to call it). It comes from the plant or I have to buy it? The thing is that I planted the flowers, but as far as I can see it`s not that way how it works 😅 I should have planted the seeds or that bulb 😬
@LifeAfter40IsGood
@LifeAfter40IsGood Год назад
@@vamosApasear - give it time. Do not dig up the bulb until all the leaves and stems are brown & dried out. Once the flowers die, the energy of the plant starts going to the bulb portion and that’s how the ‘babies’ are formed. You should still water them until they start to brown a lot. Then just let them dry completely when you can easily tug on the brown part and it comes off then you can remove the bulb if you wish. I don’t disturb my bulbs unless I’m relocating or gopher & squirrel proofing them. 😂
@jwijn
@jwijn 8 месяцев назад
After flowering let the plant stay for abouth six weeks without water.In that period the bulb retracts essential elements from the leaves so it can give power to the new baby plant when planted again.But after harvesting the old bulb,The old bulb needs a a period 3 or 4 months between 25 to 30 celcius before planting again.

Do not let your freesia produce seeds. Seeds take a long time to grow. And it takes a lot if energy from the bulb.
@shedotoads
@shedotoads 2 года назад
Don’t believe it. My freesias sown as seed in September flower the following April( most of them) As for the old myth that the seed pods take a lot of strength from the corms, lots of gardeners dismiss this. Plants with ripening see pods keep their foliage much longer, simply to build up the seeds.

Neo Bill - I plant them in the Spring. I like to plant them in little planter boxes with nice potting soil - this way they get the best chance of germinating and I can isolate them. Hi Lala - wow, your season is later than mine. You must be in another country. I wait until Spring to plant my seeds. I am a lazy gardener so I just collect them and then dry them out (you don't want to store them w/ moisture or they will mold). Then scatter them when your spring season arrives.
