I failed the lisianthus test last year, I started seeds and bought plugs but no flowers. Thanks for this video, it helped me understand where I went wrong.
I wanted to say thank you for your videos on Lisianthus. I have successfully harvested my 1st batch of champagne and I'm waiting to see my roseanne brown next! I think the trick for me was using less water than I thought it would want. Ex. As seedlings, I let them dry a bit between watering. I put them in raised beds and the soil drys out between watering so the top layer is dry. Also, I used biotone in the soil when they were transplanted. I think my Arena 3 Golds are duds but they were watered much more heavily than the other 2 varieties.
Fantastic! This video was exactly what I was looking for! You answered all my questions and some I didn't even realize I had! I'm off to check out what others you might have!
This is my first year growing Lisianthus. I’m very excited by the germination I’ve experienced so far. Oh my are they itty bitty tiny. I decided last year soil blocking is the only way I’ll do my seedlings and am addicted to making these little brownie bite mud pies 😅. I appreciate the tips and advise! I’m a Colorado native home gardener and haven’t found a lot of resources for our area / altitude. Im very new to gardening in general. Dabbled a bit in the past but have really enjoyed growing cut flowers and a few vegi’s This will be my third year, and I’m so excited! I received a greenhouse from Santa this year and was looking for ideas and came upon your channel. I love your content so far and will be watching all of them :). Looking forward to a wonderful 2023 season!
Sorry just seeing this, I had an amazing experience and way over bought this year. They have become my #1 favorite flower!!! I planted 2.5 full trays this year and was planning to plant out today only to discover 1 full tray (300 plants) and about 80 of my second tray got cooked in the greenhouse 😢 I’m devastated. The effort is well worth the reward, but heartbreaking when lost. Best of luck and hope you are giving them a go this year!
So glad I found you. Colorado native and starting a rural flower farm and nursery. I had great luck with my Lisianthus last year until my lambs and bunnies got the tray lol. I'm excited to use your videos as a resource as I grow. Colorado is tricky to grow in so any help is appreciated.
So glad I came across your video, best information I’ve seen about growing lisianthus. Had my first experience last season and it was rather dismal so after watching this I’m more confident about having more success in 2023!
Excellent video!!! You are a great teacher. I am in Michigan and this is my first "real" season with my cut flower business. I am just tiny compared to you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
What a great tutorial, especially since I'm just up the road from you all outside Boulder. Lisianthus are one of my favorites. I hope to start some next year rather than trying to buy just a few plugs. This year is for installing the new dahlia bed.
Great video! On my 3rd season growing Lisanthus from seed. I just purchased a soil blocker. Still getting the hang of the soil consistency. I was lucky enough To get 2 trays of plugs from Grow & Sell. I live just around the corner from them & stopped in with fingers crossed! I've been repotting plugs all week! I definitely picked up a couple tips from your video. Thank you!🌿
This video had SO many excellent tips. Some I’ve learned from experience 😢 and now I can have a good chance at a successful growing season. THANK YOU ❤❤
Thanks for the tips. I did use the 1" soil blocks last year and I had great success. But it's time to step it up. Going to try lisianthus in the smaller soil blocks and try all your tips (i.e. green sand, mycorrhizae, pitt moss).
So happy i found your channel love lisianthus flowers and have not been successful.. ..this video was sooo helpful.looking forward to some success next season❤
This is the most comprehensive lisianthus video I've watched. I've watched many. Thanks so much! 6b Saint Louis, Missouri I have about 80 blocks germinating as we speak, to grow in my suburban home cut flower garden. Thanks to your tip in this vid, I'm going to move a tray with only about 20% germed, back on to the heat mat. Again, thanks so much!
I live in Edwardsville IL about 30 minutes from St Louis. I was wondering how they do here and hoping to start them but wondering if our winters are too rough.
I want to thak you for one of the better video s ( your best is yet to come, keep at it ) on growing lizzies! I just found out that they do great in my zone with some shade, moisture, they actually tolerate heat and drought! Las Vegas heat and drought is not tolerated by anything but desert plants but I can give it some tlc and will try to make it work..first time beginning flower aspiring farmer, will let you know how it goes! thank you
My first year growing lisianthus. I’ve been waiting for them to get ‘big enough’ to plant out. Few details of how to grow them given by my well known supplier here in U.K. Thanks for putting me straight. Even if I fail this year, I’ll try again next year now I know how.
I really enjoyed this video. I already planted my lisianthus seeds in row cells, and they are germinating. I spray them every day, my main worry is fungus gnats. This video was very helpful. Next time, I’ll do soil blocks for sure.
I’m starting mine tonight. Super excited to have a armload in about 8 months. They actually do sell lisianthus at Home Depot and Lowe’s here in Hawaii. My first was from there.
Thank you! This will be my first year growing them from seed and I love that I will know the whole history of what my flowers will have received in terms of nutrients (and no pesticides). You’ve given me so many beneficial tips!
I had to rewind this a few time to see what she was saying…. I also freaked a little when I saw the price of a 1 lb bag is over $150. I certainly want the best outcome given the effort but curious of the formula and source. Maybe I’m looking up the wrong product or there are alternatives to consider
Thank you so much!! I’m zone 9, so have already started by seed. First set: 128 trays, yielded 99.9% germination. About to start 4th leaf stage. Earlier in the week, I sowed 2 trays of soil blocks. And now we wait. 😂
Thank you! I just purchased some plugs (less than 20). I’ve never grown them before. If they come in trays/cell’s should I transplant them to some type of soil block? (New to soil blocking too). I appreciate all the info! Stunning Flowers you have grown! 🌱🌸💗
Thank you so much for this info. I ordered plugs, and they will be here this weekend!! I'm so excited, and kinda scared. I don't want to kill them! I'm going to put them in raised beds. Some where, I think I heard that putting cinnamon in their soil will help deter fusarium. Do you know any thing about this? Thank you again. Your style of teaching is awesome. all of the videos of yours that I've listened to have been VERY informative and have PRACTICAL hints and tips. Thanks for keeping it real.
I LOVE lisianthus!! As in write poems and sing songs about them!! Haven’t had any success at all starting seeds. Now I’m armed and ready to try again! I don’t have any experience with soil blockers. Should I invest in one? LOVE ❤️ them I say!😊
Mine are coming up so I’m trying to keep them moist. The voyage series is my favourite but I’m trying a few arenas this year. I’ll have to think about the soil blocking . I’m a little hesitant as I have weak wrists.
I’ve never grown these, but they keep popping up on videos so I may have to try. They appear to be the same germination as petunias. They look like roses. I wonder if they would do well in winter sow jugs? That’s a lot of starts! Wow! I have to fence everything because deer and rabbits eat Everything here. I think I’m close to having enough 7’ high fence to do all the acreage😂. I’d probably have to go higher as they will jump if the other side isn’t packed with plants. Sure would be nice to see the plants without a fence. And you said it, plants are Expensive this year and so are some seeds! Thanks!
This is awesome learning. We’re challenging ourselves by growing Lisianthus for next year (and it’s our first year micro flower farming). Thank you very much for sharing!
I’m so glad I watched this! I bought some Lisianthus seeds from Johnny’s and now I know it’ll be too late to start and plant them for this season. I’m ready for next season, though!! 😃
you know what? they may not bloom but you may very well have a great learning curve by just doing everything and letting go of bloom time. then you’ll have made all the mistakes this season and next will be better!
Thanks for focusing on all of the steps and not rushing thru important details. Do you also grow eucalyptus from seed? I know they take a long time like lizzy, but are warm season. Also, 1st time soiling blocking and I’m wondering if while I’m waiting for the seed to germinate should I be bottom watering for misting the top of the blocks??
Thanks for all the awesome instruction. I’m in Maine and the same zone as you. Was wondering how you actually harden-off your Lisianthis. Beginner here. Thanks again.
i just bought seeds for my garden and now i am so discouraged. i will never do all this for a flower. i am going to throw them in the ground and see what happens and if they dont grow then i guess i wasted my money. i usually plant cosmos in this area and you put that on your i am not going to grow them this year video lol so i am not on the same page as you but i still subscribed to you and i did everything you said not to do,lol
Hi, I have learn so much from your videos. I never grow flowers because I overwater them 😮I leave in South California, I’m planting Lisiamthus from seeds, group 3, when should I plant the seed? For group 1 and 2 do I need the light? Also, how often I water them? And, when you mentioned in between water, is like once a day, every other day? I’m so sorry for all the questions. Like I said I’m new and I want flowers in my yard and house. Have a great day 😊
I’ve been gardening for 55 years. These are far too intimidating for me! I can see you have many years of experience. You must have started when you were a very little girl because you still look young and beautiful. Thank you for this informative video.
This is wonderful! I'm so glad to have found a flower grower who has the same frost date as me, it makes the information so much more relevant! Here's my question: You talked a lot about the netting, which makes sense, but how would I go about staking these flowers as I only have a few!
Can the seeds get to warm when before they germinate? I have them on heat mats and grow lights and I'm worried about them getting too warm. Thanks for the video
I started my 1st batch of roseanne brown and champagne Voyage and i had beautiful germination. Couldn't have done this well without ur video. Thank you! I started a 2nd batch of corelli and i think i got them too wet, and left both the dome and heat mat on too long 😅 😳 i had great germination within the 10-15 day window but the seedling stems are kind of long (a little above soil level) and the stems are skinny. the tiny leaves are sticking up. Did i mess up my 2nd batch? I promptly removed the heat, dome and put a fan on them to take the soil from soggy to moist.
I usually buy my lisianthus from a Mennonite garden center. 1.99 for a four pack. I always buy her out. They usually have like 50 cell packs of each color. The usual green, purple/blue, red, white, white with pink rim and blue rim. And i usually have 90 percent success with theirs. The 10 percent that dont make it, its usually my fault. This year i saved seeds and im going to give it a go.
I would love to grow Lisianthus in my area. I am in Cortez, CO at 6200 feet. I got a few seedlings started many years ago but lost them. But now I know how to properly start them. I would love to stop by your place.
Great video - thank you so much! Super informative. I'm going to try soil block with Lisianthus this year for first time. It seems most online tutorials say to use a lamp and that it needs at least 12 hours of sunlight to germinate. Do you use grow lights as well as heat mat and dome?
Thanks for the awesome knowledge sharing! I live in zone 8b Texas and just had my first year of growing my lizzys from seeds and had fairly good results. One thing I did notice is that they seem perennialized themselves in our zone, but they do look like a rosette growth because the new growth are all formed down at the base. I was wondering if this happened to you guys and if so, will them flower again since you mentioned that rosette will stop the flowers from happening? Thanks a lot!
Is there any progress from your lisianthus with that rosette growth? 😢 I’m thinking of growing them in my zone but hearing that they are prone to a few issues along with their slow growth makes me turned off instantly.
@@dolsemiyano For me, rosetting is not an issue, but actually a natural way for them to grow in size. They grow as a bigger, rosetting base, with multiple flower stems up when it's bloom time. But again, this is just for my zone of 8b, where lisianthus is a perennial.
