The original meaning of a freestyle is that the verse would just be all over, not exactly a battle rap but just has no specific subject (being free). Then the meaning transferred in the late 90s to meaning that it was off the top of your head, but now a days many rappers are using the original meaning and letting the listener decide what they want to think. Like backseat freestyle by Kendrick wasnt an actual freestyle
