Freestyle Shoulder Recovery Arm

It makes sense when swimming freestyle to lift the recovery arm high out of the water-the thought being "the arm is in the water and it needs to come out". But this lifting out leads to a contraction of the scapula as the shoulder draws back to get that lifting which adds some unnecessary tension to the back, neck and shoulders. This shoulder action could also cause twisting in the lower back if the hips are flat.
Instead, use a side lateral raise motion to recovery the arm forward. Keep the recovery arm elbow pointed toward the ceiling as the fingertips skim the water creating a "triangle shape". If the hand is not clearing the water, take the hand wider to make a wider based triangle. Wider not higher.
Another in water view of the triangle recovery arm:

This is without question the best demonstration of the correct way to recover the arm. I tried it and it works (and pain free!). Thanks Coach Celeste

Brilliant. Forget all the rest! Just watch and listen to this lady's very insightful demonstration of freestyle recovery - which is more technically important than mastering the catch.

Most videos fail to instruct the cause and only explain the effect, this is the first video which describes the cause and the effect. Thank you 🙏

What an incredible explanation. I'm not going to train today because I have a tennis class, but tomorrow I'm going to do a light workout in the pool and I'm going to add this movement. Thank you very much, coach Celeste. Alexandre from Brasil.

OH. MY. GOD. People have been trying to teach me this in soooo many ways, and not until just now watching your video do I finally understand. I cannot wait to get into the pool tomorrow to feel this! Thank you so so much!

OMG indeed!!! I've heard things like: high elbow, you are over rotating, etc. I did not know how to fix my recovery... No-one has managed to explain that to me better than Celeste! Thank you very much!!! Next step would be incorporating breathing 😅

Thank you. For a longtime and after seeing so many you tube video's I could for first time see the explanation put into training action both outside and inside the pool. I am in the recovery phase of my right shoulder Rotator Cuff inflammation after I experienced excruciating right shoulder Rotator pain, about 15 days from today, while practicing swimming. And I will follow your instructions in pool practice as soon as my shoulder pain has recided.👍👌

Holyshit this is by far the best video I’ve seen on the timing and recovery of a freestyle stroke I’ve seen. Especially for a beginner like my self. Thank you so much coach

To me this is the best demonstration for recover arm in freestyle swimming. Particularly the arm movement on the floor, it trained the brain when I was in the water.

Coach, how about a demo on rotating both shoulders in synchronicity for the arm stroke recovery -- that should be a less complicated explanation to follow.

For anyone still wondering if this advice is legit, let me say that the number of folks over here testifying to it speaks for itself. Like many, I've been pouring through videos after videos to understand what those content creators were saying but never fully grasping what they were saying. A simple line with action to "put on deodorant" tells all there is to tell. Thank you.

Could you please tell me after weight shift, do we kick downard.
@TriathlonSkills-SimpleSwims
the downward kick helps the weight shift, and helps to drive the length of the stroke. The downward kick is not after the weight shift.
@rajansharma2279
@rajansharma2279 Год назад
@@TriathlonSkills-SimpleSwims Then do you mean to say that downward kick inititiates rotation.

@krisacosta

But if you develop the movement pattern in the pool it is easier to transfer it to open water when it is choppy. The principle is the same, the arm normally bends less
