All 3 styles are great! Honestly, I'd love to see a competition style that - 1. 3 minute period folkstyle 2. 3 minute period freestyle 3. 3 minute period Greco. If we need an overtime, sudden death till an Ippon!

And if you know BOTH amateur wrestling(especially freestyle) and bjj you would be more prepared for catch wrestling(where you could win either by pin or submissions). I do know that Snake Pit Wigan have competitors from bjj at their contests(Some of whom MAY NOT have amateur wrestling training). While Snake Pit USA DOESN'T like bjj competitors WITH NO amateur wrestling experience at their contests. That why they banned Quentin Rosenzweig. Although Quentin did train in catch with Johnny Buck(a student of Billy Wicks). But yeah Snake Pit USA was PETTY. And the founder of Snake Pit USA have A NASTY TEMPER AND ABUSED A AIRPLANE EMPLOYEE.

But they did invite Jasmine Rocha to Snake Pit USA competition. Not a lot of people knows this but she also was a high school wrestler. But her father and POSSIBLY her brother have a BAD REPUTATION on insulting other bjj competitors.

Im Brazilian so wrestling is kinda hard to find in my country since everyone(including me lol) practiced BJJ for their grappling style but even then recently wrestling has been becoming popular and I’ve been trying to learn more wrestling explosion and control moves to complement my striking, the fact a sambo gym opened up in my city also has helped me with that. For striking I practice Muay Thai, karate and boxing btw.

@@josuerodriguez12b Judo is also something I like, it was my first martial art and I started it at age 4, it's relatively easy to find in my country as well, but I think wrestling is more fast-paced and explosive which is something I lack in my grappling and wish to work on that, judo and BJJ have submission techniques while wrestling is much more focused on positional control and superiority the exception being catch wrestling and Folk styles, I have focused much more in striking throughout my life so my grappling, in general, is a bit lacking in comparison.

Why did they create folkstyle and play amongst themselves? Wouldn’t focusing on freestyle/greco and competing internationally more prestigious?
@kallepikku4991
@kallepikku4991 2 года назад
They didn't. Both Freestyle and Folkstyle come directly from the same parent style: Catch wrestling. When Olympic movement banned submissions from (Catch) wrestling in 1920s, both sides of Atlantic started independently establishing formal rulesets for what was known at the time as "Amateur Catch wrestling". The goal was to make it more safe and youth friendly, in accordance to the Olympic ideal. Both sides created different governing bodies for their wrestling organizations, but ultimately it was the European hegemony which took over internationally. Notice: this was during 1920s where Europe was still the world leading power, and U.S was still engaging more or less in isolationism. By the time U.S became an active superpower in 1950s, Freestyle had already firmly established itself at the Olympics. In fact, the early iterations of Freestyle and Folkstyle were very similar to each other, as both tried to mimic the essense of their parent: Catch . However, that was 100 years ago. Since then, both wrestling styles have undergone multiple rounds of changes in rulesets for various reasons. These days they appear to be more far apart, so it's more difficult to see the common origin.
@tichtran664

@@kallepikku4991 Yeah as the US was MORE ISOLATED their "amateur catch wrestling" was more OLD FASHIONED. Old fashioned as in the sense of NO SUPLEX. After all suplex came originally from greco roman wrestling. But thank to the influence of Georg Hakensmidt(sp?) and Karl Gotch it later went into freestyle and pro wrestling. Unfornately while the suplex did go into pro wrestling it didn't went into what is now known as folkstyle wrestling. At least here in the US.

For,me as a former wrestler and coach folk style is more familiar and has the the thing that makes American wrestlers have the style of hard hand fight lots of snaps but not very good at partare in freestyle I am in favor of some kind of adoption if a push out or fleeing the mat penalty or scoring for high school its hard to define criteria in college,it becomes a judgement call and not allways a common sense call but I still favor it to high school just walk out when your underhooked or any other tie up your not comfortable with anyway thats my 2 ¢ I prefer folk style for the athleticism,and,strength endurance grind weight cuts makes the USA the hard nosed determaned bad ass humble bunch we have on our national team all stems from folk style
