Happy new year, Andy! I'll be working on the F-14 setup demo today. There's a lot of mixing in that one but I won't recommend all of my settings as I haven't flown it yet - though I suspect it'll fly just fine with how I've got it programmed.

Very informative which give me plenty of knowledge in setting up my Freewing Mig 29 with a thrust vectoring unit which is on it's way to me. I currently use a Dx9 Gen1, will be using the same receiver as this video. Will have to watch the video again as a lot to take in. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Stuart! I try to be helpful - there's at least 50 other channels out there where you can watch someone fly in circles. Going over setups, I feel, helps provide something of value to you. I also went to the dark side a purchased a spektrum ix12 to be able to emulate your set up. So far I only got the gear and door sequenced and what a pain in the ass that was. Now on to the mixing and set up.
Ordered the 8 channel Spektrum. (Think it was something like “AR80630T”. I’ll be watching this video a few times next week. As always, thanks for posting this and all the helpful babble. I owe you a beer or 12 if we run into each other.
Nice video! lots of useful info. I just got one and would like to do the same with separating ail/flaps/ele/rudders. Do you recall the length of the servo extension required to get rid of the ribbon cable and split ail flap and gear direct to receiver? I'm going to try a different technique with speedbrakes that worked well with F-16 (flaperons up and elevators full down). All on one momentary switch: Full ail and Flaps up, full tailerons down and rudders inwards (like F18)...for landing rollout use only. What do you think?
I don't specifically recall the length, but you can't go wrong with at least 0.5 to 0.75m worth of servo leads. It just takes some effort to run them through using a string. With landing rollouts, any surfaces hitting the air stream will work. The more deflection you get and the more surface area you can present to the air, the faster it'll slow down. Go for it!
Yep, snow sure is beautiful and fun to play with...then you have to shovel it. Using a shovel or a snow blower or even a plow, snow becomes a four letter word.
Wow, great video! Where to start? I like where you are going with this. Being a jeti user, I m certain my gear has the capabilities to duplicate but my lack of exploring all of its features over the past 8 years is going to force me to learn the radio better before ending up with the same result. That is a good thing as I’ve put up with this nuance by cheating and timing when the gear retract based on the known delay. Hard to get that right every time and duplicate scale operation. My Raptor has 15 channels available with a 10 channel rx + 5 via a 5 channel expander. I like your method of eliminating the delay of gear cycling via using sequence programming. Again, something I have not tried to date.
When you're on the quest to get maximum performance, removing dead weight like the blue box is super important. I'm sure you'll get a similar setup using your own radio equipment.
Jon, enjoy your videos. You’ve got som great stuff! I just received my Freewing F-22 and I’m using your sett up. I’ve removed the Freewing control box and I’m installing a Spektrum AR10360T. I was hoping you could give me a tip on how to program the gear sequence. I can’t figure out how to tell the doors to remain open after gear extension? I’m using an NX 10 and was hoping you might be familiar. Thanks, Frank M.
Sequencing isn't something we're able to explain easily via text. The best way to practice it would be to connect a receiver to a pair of servos on a table or desk, then adjust settings until one of them closes before the other. 90mm-class Freewing retracts generally take two to four seconds to close, so time the second servo (which would function as the door servo) to sequence based on that information.
Was just wondering what you have your flaps/elevator setting. Just for normal wing configuration. Still trying to figure out how to mix speed brakes for when I land. Lol. Using a ix20.
We don't use a normal flap setting on the jet - it's always with full span flaps. You'd have to test them out and see for yourself as we never actually fly with standard flaps on the F-22.
Very nice, but i am just curious how many times you used these mixes during your flights? In my opinion for some fields you can use some flaps, taileron, flaperon in order to help when you take off, the second some mix to make the landing easier, low speed, keep the attitude of the plane ant at least when you are on the ground and you want to stop quicker, air brake or crow..If i well understood you don t use the blue box, can you tell me how did your front light to be on, i suppose in the plane is off? and how many ch have on the receiver?
Check any of our F-22 content we've posted - we use everything demonstrated here. That's why we made a setup guide for it. ;) The landing light uses the Freewing LED Controller V3 in lieu of the blue box. It's using a 10 channel receiver.
question for you about 150% or max throws- when you are setting your planes up for max throw potential, are you doing the 150% only in the Radio? or are you also maxing out the mechanical set up in addition to the radio? or just mechanical max throw? ie- furthest out hole on the servo and closest in on the surface?
Usually maxing out the mechanical and electrical throw unless there's no need. Ailerons on this jet work better with 150% rates and a hole or two in on the control arm.
Just a comment. You may want to look into FrSky and OpenTX. I've been doing taileron and flaperon mixing for 8yrs now. Watched a bit of your video, and the way you go from turning on and off seems "difficult" or as you say unconventional. I've always used either flight modes to turn those functions on/off, or just simply tie them to their own switch. Both are pretty similar. With OpenTX you can mix any channel and/or switch to each other. There really are no limits. Good work either way.
It's not difficult or even unconventional - I just don't want to use flight modes because I want the ability to switch in and out of specific configurations as I please, rather than being rigidly locked into a FM system that might not let me get the most performance out of this model. Appreciate the feedback however!
Thanks for the setup video got my f22 on order. I’ve got a dx8 and 8chanel as3x so I guess I would have to choose either flapperons or tailerons. Which would you go for?
Hey Jon I’ve been getting really comfortable with my Raptor. I have my tailerons set up and I can do low and slow high alpha really well now. I learned how to flat spin my 2.1m Carbon cub and my TT evolution but I can not get my raptor to flat spin. It just doesn’t want to rotate. I have everything set up by the book in terms of throw. I think the obvious answer to this would be more rudder throw but what about elevator or aileron? Any thoughts? My CG is 165mm back as you recommended and it flies and lands so much better than 150mm
I have got the exact same set up as you now. I did switch ch1 (throttle)and ch 2 (R. Ail), due to the fact that I am using a 5280 rc led burner. I am wondering if that is why i can not get one of the flaps to go in the same direction of the aileron after i did your mix.Will that affect the mixing set up by swapping the channels and I am having trouble trying to figure out how to set up standard tail configuration and stabilators on a switch. Any information would be greatly appreciated when you have time.
Switching the channel positions should make no difference. Try assigning the mix to left flap instead of right, or vice versa. One of them will be the counter-rotating channel. Setting up differential stabs on a switch is done by mixing AIL -> LEL and disabling it on your preferred switch position.
I had a couple of questions, first the 5280 rc led after burner for the f22 you got for the viper motor ,since you said you put that power system in the f22, is that correct? Also do you have you full span ailerons and tailerons on full time when flying or do you have on switch and go back and from conventional set up to full span ailerons and tailerons?
Yes, the 5280RC system is correct. We do fly with ailerons, flaperons, and differential stabilators. We used to have a switch to disable them but we keep them on all the time now.
I got some those bicycle hangers that have for your planes from lowes. Did you spread yours open to fit the fuselage of the f22, cause mine looks like yours, but they are not wide enough. Just wanted to make sure I got the correct ones.

I have the same reciever. Setting up the gyro in forward programing I can't get the right elevator to be recognized. The transmitter controls everything just fine, but the right elevator, on channel 7 isn't recognized by the gyro. The channels are listed in forward programming correctly but dang if this right elevator will initialize.

so i have done high alpha with the f22 with the little custom bottom strakes and the bad news is that above like 30 degrees the roll control reverses hard on this so having the gyro correct roll on the stabs makes it rock even more because the stabs stall faster at higher aoa so they just become airbrakes what i do is manually input roll opposite to the direction i want to roll which messes with your brain so hard trying to fly like that but it works
I am trying to do this with my free wing F-16 but every time I change the aircraft type back to dual elevators, safe and AS3X no longer works. I am ripping my hair out trying to get stabilization on the stabilators

Investing in some AR8360T instead of the usual Ar631. Bloody pricey upgrade! Happy with my tailerons and flaperons I put on my little Xfly Su27.
The latter. Gear up = 150% rates, 70 to 85% expo depending on the model. Gear down = 47% rates (47% of 150% = 70%) with 50% expo. Setting this up does two things: A) It prevents the stabs from reaching the ground on bumpy landings and takeoffs. B) It prevents overcontrol during critical phases of flight.
I just got the 90mm fan efla9012df viper fan. But the motor is on back order. The question I have did you also have to shave the back of the fuselage where the fan sits to get the fan to go back enough the get mount tabs of the fan to be over the wood mount plate?
You can pick up the motor and fan unit via bit.ly/FMS1950kv - the entire motor and fan unit is in stock currently. We had to modify the case that sits over the fan by shaving it down heavily with sandpaper and water. You can shove the motor further back inside its housing in the jet and it'll seat into position.
So the motor from horizon hobby shipped and I ordered fan/ motor combo through fms like you said. So I will get the motor first and already have the horizon hobby fan. My question is the eflite motor and fan are the same as the fms? You had sent me the info on power system through eflite and then you let me know that fms had them in stock. Just wanted to make sure if one was better than the other. Thanks for all of your insight.

So you did get the F14! I'm planning to get the ARF F14, and put 2 Xfly 80mm inrunners in it. A thought about the flaperon and the taileron setup. I've heard a lot of people say they don't get a linear response with the F14 when its wings swept back. The reason is when the wing is swept back, and moving trailing edge up, the ailerons are generating turbulence which affects the taileron. Could the flaperon does the same thing to the taileron on the F22 as they are pretty much right next to each other?
I did get it! The stock jet, no ARF. It seems pretty powerful to me taxiing it up my 16 degree incline driveway and 8 degree street. I've got mine set up to disable ailerons in general, so I shouldn't get any issues with them... Hopefully.
Hi Jon. I will be picking up this plane soon. I have a Spektrum NX8 transmitter so I will not be able to have all the functions you have on your plane. I will most likely set it up simple at first and then maybe add crow or the full span flaps. What features do you think are most important and do you think I should buy an 8-channel receiver for future expansion?
Hey Jon and Tony. I just placed my order for an F-22! I was wondering if you have any thoughts on the blue box. I’m seeing a lot of videos of Freewing jets getting brownouts and nosediving. I don’t quite understand the purpose of the blue box and why this issue still happens. I’m scared of toasting an $800 plane
What is significant about setting up wing and tail configurations? For example: Swept wing/Delta wing/ V-tail? Do these configurations alter the behavior of your aircraft controls to a degree or what is so special about setting it up?
Wing and tail config determine predefined mixes for that specific type of aircraft. E.g. elevon wing types will automatically handle the mixing to make it handle pitch/roll as aerodynamically required. It will also instruct the receiver to stabilize it accordingly. If you don't use the correct type of wing or tail for your specific aircraft, the gyro won't stabilize it properly.
@@TwoBrosRC I have a Freewing Su-35 that can be taileron/elevon mixed. Is it critical that I program the radio to use that specific wing and tail configuration?
@@TwoBrosRC My maiden was a failure because of it. My buddy blames the thrust vectoring but I blame the wind and no stabilator mix. Do the wing configurations make a difference though? What would you configure a su-35 to for wing and tail mix?
@@larsulrich3356 I'd rig up a Su-35 as a flaperon wing type with dual elevators, one rudder. Wing configuration absolutely makes a difference. How AS3X stabilizes a model is directly linked to how it was set up as a wing and tail type. My F/A-18C uses an elevon wing setup so the stabilators correct for pitch and roll. The ailerons have no AS3X effectiveness at all. This means that I need higher gains to get roll disruptions stabilized because the stabilators aren't as effective on roll as they are in pitch.
Hi Jon been stuck on this for 2 nights now. I'm setting up the tailerons and iv tried all plane tail set ups. I can get the to work but like you at 30mins in.. In Safe mode the tailerns are working opposite to the ailerons and I don't think u managed to fix that issue here. Yes they work for stability when rocking the plane but when using the sticks they aren't working the correct direction. In AS3X mode the tailerons do work correctly. Also you mentioned about switching tailerons off. How did you do this? With mixes AIL to LEL to iron the tailerons out? I'm busy mixing them out on D for no tailerons, low rate and high rate input. Is this the correct way to get tailerons on and off? Hope you can help. Esp the Safe issue with reversed tailerons problem. Cheers.
Make sure you have a differential stabilator mix active when SAFE is turned on, otherwise it'll work backwards. E.g. don't turn them off when SAFE is engaged. Make sure you're using the Taileron A or B type (whichever is required to make directions work correctly) and program the receiver using that tail type before moving it back to dual elevators.
@@TwoBrosRC hi Jon I'm not sure what the differential is but I'll look into it. I thought I had it fixed this morning. Mixes that made no tailerons at D 0. Low rate tailerons at D 1. High rate tailerons at D 2. It worked but soon as I enabled Safe on the RX the rates do drop as ud expect since safe reduces throws but at D 0.(no tailerons) Safe is reversing my tailerons like it was in this video. That's the biggest problem I'm facing. I don't mind less throws dual ELV/tailerons set up. It's the reverse tailerons in safe I can't fix. When moving the plane around, Safe is working in the correct manner for all surfaces. Just in flight its gona be a pig in the air in Safe if my tailerons are working against the AIL.
@@TwoBrosRC oh understood! I was messing with Differential on the TX wondering what the hell I was doing! That's the thing tho in Safe the tailerons move against the Ailerons when I'm going left and right on the aileron stick. Out of Safe the mix works fine. Honestly it's just how it is in your video at 30mins. I don't know what it is u done to fix it
I assume you have traded off having full landing flap in order for the flap surface to move up. ie you have manually set nil flap with linkage in mid servo position. Do you feel it is a disadvantage not being able to deploy max possible flap for landing?
@@TwoBrosRC I'm wondering how you are managing that. I set/linked my flaps when they were in zero flap position to servo arm when at rearmost setting. Half flap set to approx 20 deg and full flap is at servo full forward position. If I was to set/link flaps with the surface up and servo arm in rear position, when it moves to fully opp position the flap surface is not going to be as deflected as with previous setting. So I'm feeling you must surely be sacrificing some landing flap?? I struggled with the curve mixing and gave up in the end. My NX10 is rather different portrayal and I couldn't get the curves you had. I tried a variety of settings then gave up send wentvto bed! - it was getting late.
I'm really sorry I'm not getting my head round flap operation and flap operating in unison with ailerons. I'm probably being a complete retard! I watched your video yet again. For me, it's a shame the video doesn't seem to cover linkage and servo changes - if any. I found it really quick and easy to deal with the cable threading - a bit of twine pulled through and back again tied to cable. I've now set it up with flaps being flaps and ailerons drooping in line with flaps for take-off and then going to a few degrees up when full flaps are selected. I need to be led through step by step - I'm afraid I found your video rather muddling because you seemed to keep wandering off on some explanation unconnected with the direct setup. In my view that sort of video should be purely instructional to help educate those of us who need it in the intricacies of setup. Many thanks for all your efforts.
I took off the control arms and reattached them to the servos at their mid point to get full up and down travel. I'm also using 150% rates which gives more than enough travel in both directions.

Sup Two Brothers. Futaba flier giving Spektrum a chance. So far seems easier as Spetrum IX20Se explains things…. Question is are you doing 2 different flight modes, or are your mixes for flaperons and elavons always on? Using all surfaces all the time makes complete sense but it would seem taming things back down , for landing, makes me think modes make sense. Your mixes resemble a bird in flight and I’m guessing that’s how they got the F-22 to shine. My concern is flaps and elevator moving opposite during landing. Got a F-22 Raptor 8s on the way and I want full maneuverability, so I’m interested that you went there with removing the included blue-box. Next question, how’d you get dark mode blue instead of black on the IX20Se? It’s cool😉
No flight modes here - the control surfaces all moving, all the time. We use lower rates for landing and takeoff, and full rates for flying. This is covered in the gear based rates chapter. The gear switch governs the rates used. Dark mode is an option in the Airware app as of a few updates ago.

So.hard.to.follow. Seems I'm not able to keep up and you're far too advance for me. It's like we've skipped to the last three chapters of the book vs. reading the whole thing. :). I'd love to see you start with your simple AR1036T receiver set up (channel assign, etc) to set the stage for all the advanced stuff. Might be easier to learn this way. I'm on an iX14 and fly predominantly SMART / Spektrum products. Perhaps I'm in over my head here with this Jet. I'd like to get the AR1036T installed, the , allow me to fly it in SAFE as needed, AS3X all the time and somehow eventually learn how to get the initial mixes set up to enhance the flight abilities. Sadly, I'm so afraid now regarding getting this setup right that I'll likely never take this thing to the field. I'll put this on repeat until I get it. Thanks Jon.
This is definitely not an intro into setup - this is one of the most advanced F-22 setup vids you'll get. You'd be following this guide if you're interested in getting the most out of the model, ideally. Fortunately, you can always rewatch anything until you've gotten it down. @@kawasakizx14jomamamoto57 You can, but it's going to require a lot more effort than using an equivalent Spektrum radio - and we unfortunately cannot assist with non-Spektrum programming questions.
Why not do a video for a simple setup for taileron by just disconnecting the 2 elevator leads from the bluebox and plugging those leads directly into 2 separate channels on the receiver. This allows mixing with most transmitters so the stabulators follow the ailerons but ailerons do not follow the up down action of the stabulators. The only negative I can identify is If you use a gyro you loose.elevator stabilization capability.
We're not sure what you're referring to here. The way our jet is set up in this vid bypasses the blue box entirely. It doesn't even exist in our setup.
