Hiding the original un-processed tracks in the mixer is a brilliant idea. I never thought of that before. Keep everything in your workflow clean!

Yep, fabulous explanation, which has changed my workflow completely as up to now I have always saved a new version of the project and then rendered all the MIDI tracks and then deleted them. Disabling and hiding them is SO MUCH better and enables me to easily go back a stage if necessary, instead of messing about importing from previous projects etc. Thanks for that .... every day is a school day! x

I got the crossgrade to Nuendo 12 and I feel so happy that I decided to make the (progressive) transition to it, cuz Steinberg really puts in the effort. To be perfect, all they need to do is to address the sloppy Clip Gain automation (make it like in Studio One). After that, I would have nothing else to ask for. And Thanks, Dom, you are the GOAT in teaching Cubase 💙

RENDER IS SUPERB!!! Makes my job smoother as an Engineer And keeps the vocals sounding clean with only 2.3 ms of latency in and out! When working with VST instruments is the main reason for using this feature as well as getting your mix ready to send stems to a mastering studio if needed! All At 96k! Wowzer! Thanx Dom!

It would be interesting and practical to have in the rendering options on the spot, the choice to integrate or not the auxiliaries independently in each situation. In dry or through the groups or also through the master bus. in each situation the choice to put them or not.

Great video Dom!! I tried the Render in Place option, but didn't work that good for me. I use a lot of VST instruments with Multi Tracks. So to render all the channels of a single instrument I have to do them one by one, or select all the events involved, which sometimes is not that easy in a complex project. Besides it doesn't unload the VST instrument, so I still prefer freezing the VST instruments instead, but I might give it another chace the way you do it. Thanls!!

THANKS! I didn't know about any of these things... and for me render in place is going to be in constant use. I used to route what I wanted to an audio track and record it that way. Doing that works just like render in place but obviously it takes more time and thought to get it right.

Hey Dom. Thanks for the video. Funny how I literally experimiented with these functions this past week. Great tip on keeping a duplicate version before bouncing. Two questions not related: 1. Regarding A/B referencing in Control Room: Is there a way to route or connect the reference track (cue mix) to the master meter? I always have to use the Supervision level meter to A/B compare the peak and RMS of my mix with the reference mix. The master meter only reflects the readings for the mix, even when you switch to the cue. 2. Have you ever considered doing a course for Cubase? I think your knowledge is invaluable, particularly when it comes to electronic music production. Many ppl still think Cubase is this dinosaur that's outdated. Of course that's only because it's not easy to crack so it's not everyone who has it like some other DAWs that will remain namelesss - let's just say I like all kinds of "fruit" but I mainly use Cubase from start to finish in my production. I'd buy your course in a second!

Hello Dom, as always thank you so much for the video. Could you please do a video about dither and why is it so important when mastering? And could you also talk about the diference between mastering with 44100 sample rate and 48000 and also the bit depth 16 or 24? And the diference between mastering for streaming services and CD? It would be so cool if you could make a video about this because there’s not much about this on RU-vid. Thank you so much! Love all of your videos!

I'm happy I found this video, my older laptop is having a hard time with CPU. I currently have a mix I'm working on and I can't export because it just crashes. So I went to use render in place outboard gear tracks to try and save some CPU and unfortunately I'm having the same issue. Now I don't know what to do 🤔☹️. I guess for now on I'll commit to R.I.P faster.

Hey Dom, great video as always. To separate the mixing process from creation I tend to bounce my midi to audio, delete the midi channels and save it as a separate project. Saves a lot on loading times, especially if you have tonnes of sample based instruments. Each to their own workflow though ;)
@apislapis
@apislapis 2 года назад
Hi Adrian, good shout. I do the same too. I may have C11 running on a Core i7 but it still struggles at times to play all my tracks. That way you can always go back and retrieve tracks if you're later unhappy with them and need to tweak and import them as a stem. I also export and import stems from older versions of 32 bit Cubase and it was never much fun when the CPU on those older machines started to stutter. Perhaps it's the experience of using older tech and old versions of Cubase that has led to my cautious approach/workflow?
@madmac66

Yeah Adrian my process too. I have a 4 file project template, tracking, arranging, mixing and mastering. Helps me focus on the job at hand and reminds me not to get hung up on mixing when I’m arranging etc. I’ve always exported audio I didn’t know about render in place. That will be a massive time saver, so thanks Dom
@AdrianEarnshawMusic
@AdrianEarnshawMusic Год назад
@@madmac66 it’s also a good process for archiving material. What happens if the vst you used to create the track is no longer available or doesn’t work with a version of Cubase. I learnt the hard way a long time ago.

The other advantage of freeze is that you can select *multiple* tracks and leave them all to render in place while you make a fresh coffee! That was a really good addition in later Cubase iterations (although I never select unload instrument as every now and again it crashes Cubase - particularly with VPS Avenger for some reason...)
@edwardstaszko

One thing I’ve noticed is that freeze does NOT work for post-fader inserts. If you have high-resource inserts, move them to pre-fader to save CPU when frozen. Great video, I have come back to it several times!

I love how Cubase now has Render In Place (or RIP Export/Import tracks). I have Cubase 11 but also have PCs running 32 bit plugins on Cubase SX3, 4 & 5 which won't work on 64 bit C11, so I know how time consuming Exporting and Importing tracks can be when using those versions and when I want to pull tracks together into C11. TBH I still don't like either the colour or the look of the new screens on C11 (and probably won't like C12 if I upgrade) but you can't argue with the features that C11 has in comparison to the earlier versions of Cubase. As always Dom, another great tutorial, thank you.

Hey Dom, very interesting topic. In my own practice, I freeze instruments tracks when I need to save some RAM, knowing that I'll modify them later. I'm doing Render in place when I know my MIDI content is definitive, and to save some time while freezing the tracks - as more the track is long, the more MIDI message it got, the longer it takes to freeze ! But anyway, you'll know better. I'll watch !
@MrTomservo85

Great comment. The video did an excellent job of describing what each feature does, but it was not completely clear on when one is better than the other. But rendering tracks in place before freezing them seems like it would save RAM as well as make freezing faster. It had not occurred to me that these tools were meant to be, or could be, used in conjuction.

Could you make videos for what makes each genre just that type of genre? Sounds, instruments, scales, chords, beat, maybe voice, etc. What they are that stands out with just that kind of genre from others. I think many would have liked to see it and then maybe get better at the kind of music they like.

Well done my friend. Can we presume then that rendering in place the complete path through to the master effects of our events selection would be the ideal way of exporting stems as well? I’m saying this because we all know of the pitfalls of exporting stems that they nearly always end up not summing up to the original level of the original track but much higher? Shouldn’t “render in place” with rendering all the path completely solve this problem? Would love your opinion on this.

Bounce selection also comes in handy when you use multiple copies of a file in the track, and you only want to manipulate one of them with ARA modules, direct processing etc. If you don't bounce a unique version, you are in for a world of pain understanding what's going on.

Awesome. A slightly deeper question about how Cubase handles the whole signal path option in render in place.... Let's say there complicated processing on the master bus, where the channel(s) or events that you're rendering are interacting in some way with the entire mix.... Like with some sort of dynamic EQ plugin or similar processing.... Does it take all of the other channels into account while rendering your selection, or does it just render the path on its own, excluding any other signals from the other channels/buses that might also be contributing in the mix to the master bus processing? Thanks

Hi, This is very useful. I think I will have to use the Render and disable functons so that CPU does not suffer . I have a Mac Pro 'Trashcan'. With Cubase 12 installed. I have extra software from NI and have discovered Spitfire Audio and bought a couple of things , including Core Orchestra which is wonderful. What is concerning me is the Technical side which I am poor at. I have 32 gb memory, 500gb storage on the hard drive. I have 2 external 3TB SATA Disk drives which I do not seem to be able to use to store new software on. Everything defaults to the HD. The HD storage is now down to 300 GB and it seems that I will not have much left for new software as I would need to keep some headroom. Any advice would be very helpful.Especially from Dom who has given me so much enlightenment so far. Thanks Andrew

Hey Dom, I found another way to render in place a hole track and disabled it without doing it manually, just by selecting the track without selecting any midi event or audio event going to render settings you'll find that you can render the track, disable the source track and there's a checkbox to hide it. After doing that it will automatically render the track disable it and hide it at ounce and this is a time saver! Really cubase is the #1 daw Thank you for you video Dom❤️
