These Freikorps are critically evaluated today because they not only functioned as troops at the disposal of the democrats against left-wing extremist subversives, but also carried out independent actions as paramilitary units and participated in the reactionary Kapp Putsch. The performance of their songs with appropriate illustrations serves the military-historical presentation and historical reappraisal, but not propagandistic purposes.
In recent research, there is now agreement on the independent life of the paramilitary associations in the early Weimar period, the vast majority of which can clearly be assigned to the radical anti-republican camp of the German right, but because of their independence cannot be seamlessly qualified as precursors of National Socialism.
