French air-powered aroma oil nebuliser.

I bought this while I was working in France. It's an oil nebuliser that uses low volume compressed air from an aquarium style pump to atomise essential oils and turn them into an airborne vapour.
It uses a glass venturi arrangement to draw the oil up from the base of the unit and then atomise it with a fine jet of air blowing across the top of a glass tip. The majority of the oil is sprayed like an aerosol against the side of the glass vessel, where it drains back down into the reservoir. The smallest droplets get lifted up as a fine mist by the low airflow and exit the top of the unit as a white cloud of oil vapour. A bit like an ultrasonic atomiser, but with pure oil.
This device seemed to be sold as an air steriliser for medical establishments. It is designed to take natural essential oils, bot also atomises synthetic aroma oils and other liquids.

You should put some LED lights in the pump since its a cool blue clear plastic maybe the mist will illuminate 💡

Subigirl Forester It does look like there's enough room inside to add some LEDs. In fact, they could probably be put in series with the air pumps coil as a series current limiter.

That's such a thorough description of how it works that I might make my own now. I've recently read how nebulizers are the best way to use essential oils as an aroma, but they appear to be quite expensive. I just need to learn how to make holes in glass. Maybe I'll use plastic for a prototype.

I've never been much for air fresheners (air aromatizers?), but that's a pretty ingenious design, I must say.

Common one here uses a bowl of oil and water, with a paddle to agitate it and a fan to circulate air over the surface of the moving wave of fluid. They work quite well, and do release the odour.

I'm certain the shunt is made of aluminum. It doesn't have any real magnetic properties. My best guess is it's used to hold the coil in (as you said), but to also force the magnetic field away from the coil.

Screwing the inlet in or out changes the distance from magnet and thus the travel of the pump arm, changing the displacement as well. Screw it in and more air comes out. Screw it out, less air comes out.

Got recommended this old video by YT. I wonder if the plug at the top originally accepted an exit hose for use in other experiments, making the entire glass portion a piece of repurposed laboratory glassware of unknown age. Someone had the idea to put it on a particularly pretty aquarium pump to create a general ambient oil atomizer with an attractive and inspiring look.
@BigClive

I don't think so. They appear to be specifically designed for the oil atomisation with the diverter on the top to trap blobs of oil fired up by the venturi jet and return them to the base.

Looks like the electric version of the inhalator by Lucas Championnère (1860). But I think you must use oil diluted in water. I've got one but you can find documentation on the internet if you're interested. Anyway, thanks for all the vids. I learn a lot and and it's downright hilarious at times. By the way, a "pharmacie" is just a drugstore. Reglemented drugs can only be purchased there in France.

It would be nice if there were some colored led's lighting up the glass nebulizer and the base would look cool if it were glowing blue like previously mentioned.

You'd want to put a timer on that so you can't overwhelm the flat with the smell of grandma's lavender garden. On for 5 min, off for an hour or two. Neat though.

voltare2amstereo You probably won't get high as you'll need to dilute the thc-oil quite a bit for it to be able to properly atomize it. But it will most definitely make your whole house smell like a snoop concert.

Great, now I *really* want one! I kinda like some aromatherapy stuff, but this is also very cool fluid dynamics too! But I can't find anything like it, just hugely overpriced (and much larger) ones. Actizoo does make aquarium stuff, but I can't even find that round compressor. Forget finding the glass part! The wicked cool part! Any ideas?

I want one, not sure what use for me, but that glass devise looks wery cool, like those old insect killers with DDT. Yes, those oil concentrates hawe wery strong smells... Think this must be much better for the healt then inhalate wax fumes, fumes from molten wax are actually dangerous to inhalate (wax particles can cause serious lung problems over time without one noticing it before it´s to late), i don´t think this oil is.

The glass atomiser is an enlarged version of a design used in the Victorian era for atomising treatments for respiratory conditions, they called it a nebuliser.

cracking little thing, I've just had a search on eBay and found some "ultrasonic" versions of this.... wonder how they work, because obviously this is compressed air, i wonder if a ultrasonic one is just as good but quieter maybe? its annoying because you just can't seem to get a decent air freshener from tesco for example. Also, do these ozone generators actually remove bad smells? or are they just a gimmick?
@BigClive
@BigClive 9 лет назад
The ultrasonic ones crak water into fog with a piezoelectric disk. You add the oil tot he water and it does give out the aroma. But the cold air nebuliser gives out pure oil vapour for a faster and stronger smell. Ozone does work at eliminating some smells, because it oxidises airborne contaminants like a gaseous bleach.

They are a device that produces a very fine haze of oil in the air by blowing a stream of bubbles through a tank of fine mineral oil. When the bubbles burst on the surface they create lots of microscopic droplets of oil that act as lenses in the air.

This device seems like it could be dangerous to one's health. I don't like the idea of breathing atomised oils. Air compressors used to recharge SCUBA diving air cylinders take great pains to keep contaminants out of the air stream lest the diver inhale any oil and develop pulmonary edema, a generally fatal condition..

Ese Callum - Colloidal silver, ingested in sufficient quantities over time, will turn a person permanently gray. The condition is called "argyria", and it isn't reversible. There are safer ways of getting rid of chest infections.

Good video but do not use "Fragrance" oils in these, they might smell nice but they are synthetic and full of chemicals. Only use Aromatherapy oils.
