Also, as far as shooting high. If you flip the sight ladder all the way forward and lay it flat pointing toward the muzzle, you'll reveal an additional U notch. That is the rifle's 250m battle sight position. That's why the handguard seems unnecessarily relieved, it is to allow for this function.

I'm impressed with PPU ammunition. It's amazing how diverse that company is in providing military surplus rifle calibers. I'm not sure of any company that makes as many old caliber cartridges as they do when it comes to these milsurp rifles. Best part is its brass and non corrosive. Beautiful rifle! I hope to get one someday. One reason it might be shooting high is that it might be "conscript sighted" meaning at 100-300 metres it will hit a target if you aim at the enemy's belt buckle (like shooting at the figure 8 mil target). This was done for fast training of conscript soldiers that didn't require you to teach them how to adjust for distance. The mosin was sighted the same way, which makes sense given the crossover production with the Russians at the time. Love your channel, long time viewer. Friend from the North.

A tip on the sights, a yard is shorter than a meter (36 inches should be 91.5cm) and the berthier is sighted in meters, so 300 yards is short of 300m by a fair margin so you need to aim low.

I Love IT!! My great great Uncle purchased one of these in Culver City long ago... I believe they were being sold off because a bunch were used in some film that was made on one of the studio lots. It was a Remington made 3 round Berthier and I remember it being so light for it's size it seemed almost like the metal shouldn't have been strong enough for the cartridge, given the fact that I also have a bunch of 91/30's that were much heavier, but with the same amount of metal. The rifle was in pristine condition however, looked like it was almost never shot, and it didn't have a serial number, meaning that Remington made it for France for WWI I guess... but it was never shipped!

Their is a cut out in the stock ahead of the rear sight. If you flip the sight all the way forward so the rear sight rests in the hole you have your battle sight. That will probably give you better accuracy out to 300 yards.
@antqav8r
@antqav8r 4 года назад
Eric, if you flip the sight to the forward position it will give you a 250 meter battle sight. The early French rifles were setup this way all the way back to the Chassepot. I have Chassepot, Gras, & Lebel rifles in my collection and they all print lower with the site flipped in the forward position then in the rear position.

Designation of the gun is Mle1907-15 Modifié 1916 or M16 which was a proper French used designation. The conversion was universal across all Berthiers, you can find Mle1890 and 92 carbines that have been updated as well. Only ridiculously small numbers of converted M16s saw service in WWI, they weren't about to pull rifles out of service to give them the update during the war.

The 8mm Lebel Rifle was the first to use this cartridge. It had a tube magazine and you will notice a special groove around the primer to prevent the rounds from going off in the tube. The 8mm Lebel cartridge also has the distinction of being the first to use a spitzer bullet. I have a Berthier M16 (1916 model). Neat old gun to shoot. The 3 round chargers were for the earlier guns which did not have the extended box magazine in 5 rounds.

@dennisandersson5552
@dennisandersson5552 4 года назад
The first rifle adopted chambered for the smokeless 8X50R Lebel cartridge was actually the Lebel mle/1886. The Berthier was adopted as a Mousqueton for the Gendarmerie in 1890 and then by the cavalry in 1892 if I remember correctly. However, the Lebel rifle was a rushed design and used a tube magazine similar to the Kropatschek, that was used by the French Navy, which made it obsolete rather quickly. This magazine system also made it long and cumbersome and the French thought that the Lebel would be unsuitable for their troops in Indochina and hence they adopted the Berthier as a long rifle for use by the indigenous troops there. When WWI started the Berhier was a lot easier to mass produce than the Lebel and so it became a very prevalent rifle in French service. A situation similar to the US Army using more P17's than Springfield 1903's in Europe during WWI..

I've not seen it mentioned in the video or in the comments so for the record the 8x50r lebel cartridge uses a .327 diameter bullet. Prvi makes a bullet in this diameter and this is what they load their ammo with. If you use a .323 diameter bullet you are likely not going to keyhole but accuracy will be subpar

Very cool piece of history! Good job. If you flip the rear site over all the way forward it will be the the 250m battle sight position instead of the 450m position you are shooting from - that should help with your shooting high. :-)

In 1915, the1907/15 gradually succeeds the Lebel rifle. Less complicated, less heavy, but of similar length, uses the 7,5mm or 8mm Lebel Type N smokeless cartridge. Its predecessor, the 1890/92 carbine was well known for being usefull in trenches due to its size. Also, the artillery type 1892 Berthier carbine has one of the biggest kick, was really appreciate by its users and was used until WW2. Even the Germans used them.

About the headspace issue, it's important to know that the partizan ammunition have a thinner base than original. This leads to excessive elongation of the case after shooting. Your rifle is a 07-15 with 1916 modification (extended magazine and upper handguard). The baïonnette you have is one modified in combat knife for the trench. In fact normaly the 1886-15 is longer, about twice as long.

Eric, this is not a 07/15, but a model 1916 with the modified 5 round magazine.

Gotta love these military rifles @Iraqveteran8888. Revolutionary if you think about how bottleneck cartridges were superior to their straight wall cousins! 200gr 8mm bullets at 2,300fps is still highly effective!!

I just got one of these today. Can you tell me where did you get the stripper clips from it?
@TheBigSomec
@TheBigSomec 4 года назад
pretty sure the Label 1886 was the first military rifle to use smokeless powder ammunition but the berthier is much improved over that gun
@lucus4485

You are correct. The Lebel 1886 model 93 used smokeless powder.

Yeah. Nagant (a frenchman) was one of the two inventors of the mosin nagant. Mosin had a gun Nagant had a gun Russia made a sort of combination of them. Hense Mosin-Nagant I'm a bit impressed with the accuracy of that gun, especially if it is as beat up as you say. Great gun. Thank you guys for these videos, you do a great job.

07/15 rifle but it's either been upgraded to an M16 pattern post WW1 because barely any m16 rifles were made during the war. Quite a few M16 carbines though.

Eric i think the dust cover is supposed to be closed manually. Thats how mine works anyway.

Mannlicher clip /charger system...bottom magazine door stays open. Empty charger falls free of rifle when 5th round is chambered. Or 3rd round chambered in the case of the 3 shot Berthier. That's a nice example there. Not bad looking arms.

What can you do to repair the headspace? Or is it a wall hanger now?

The French were known to make pretty accurate barrels. So once you figure out where your particular rifle is zeroed, you'll find it easy to make good groups.

What was the wound impact of that bayonet? Was it harder to treat than a spike or knife bayonet?

8mm lebel uses a .327" projectile, not a .323". Secondly, clip ejection port is not supposed to automatically close
@PhilReturns
@PhilReturns 2 года назад
What i know is that the door is for use as a dust cover for when the rifle is not in use and thats right for not closing automaticly.
