I've owned a number 8 in carbon steel for about 20 years, they are epic as far as camp knives are concerned imho. I keep mine under the hydration bladder in my town back pack because of the laws here in the U.K, I know its there but it is not being flashed about :)

The different sizes are best suited for different carry styles, imo. I keep a no6 in my front pocket for the most part. It’s a good medium ground between “nonexistent in your pocket” and “I can get a grip on this”. I sometimes pocket carry a no7 but that’s one click up. I can feel it in my pocket but grip it a bit better. I ALWAYS have a stainless no8 in my bag. It’s too big for your pocket (in my opinion) but it feels great to work with. So if I’m gonna be breaking down a bunch of cardboard or something like that, out comes the no8. The 8 is a killer knife to carve with, too. I keep a carbon no8 in the knife bag at my shop. You can get it *stupid* sharp and for certain jobs, it’ll hack off waste material much quicker than a sloyd knife, etc.

my understanding is opinel was one of the first, if not the first production folder to have a locking mechanism (the collar lock). simple, classic, cool knives!

That nr 6 is the best in carbon. Super inexpensive, great steel, small enough for pocket cary, big enough to do your simple chores. If you ever lose it, you will feel bad for missing your knife and replace it with the same.

I've got 2 Opinel, n°7 Carbone, n°8 Inox. I'm born in Switzerland so I started at 8 years old with Victorinox, but for security I think Opinel it's better.

one advantage to the Opinel is that in places like Los Angeles where I live is that most people don't know how the locks work so that if you open and close them with one hand like I do most people won't realize that they lock

The "EFF" is a "filet" knife. The shape and stainless steel blade is "Francais traditionnel." Carbone is carbon. Oh, and thanks for postin'. Beau!

Nice video, sick intro mate ! Especially loved when your logo animation popped up with the music in the background. Opinel (it's pronounced oh-pea-nel, you got it right =p) knives are quite versatile. Here in France, we mainly used them as wood carving tools - for those of us who are not familiar with bushcraft and therefore, with Mora, which scandi grind is superior in this regard (but well, Mora knives are slightly more expansive, they're fixed blades, heavier and bigger) - but they're more or less folding kitchen knives, actually. Hence the one to open oysters, and the "effilé" one (it means long an sharp, maybe tappered is the correct word?) is a folding cheese/fillet knife ;D ugh, they make special knives with a crooked blade just for mushroom picking; a folding sickles for gardening, another knife with a screwdriver compartment which blade has been designed to strip and cut wires... they tried making a survival/bushcraft-dedicated knife: plastic handle, a shackle wrench in the blade, which is partially serrated... but it's not so great. They are making a 12in folding saw too, but I heard it's barely better than your regular multitool saw. They're both below 25$ though. Opinel knives last very long for some reason (can't explain it, the blades are super thin and they're made of carbon) even though they're so cheap. Hope that was useful, anyway thanks for making this video, it was really good - and screw that screaming guy in the background lol

Cringe Fagget Lord Its a high carbon steel. Any Opinel that says "Carbone" is the high carbon steel while "INOX" is inoxidable (non-oxidizable), i.e. stainless. The high carbon blades can hold a sharper edge longer than a stainless blade but the tradeoff is that it is highly susceptible to rust. The most common methods of protecting a high carbon blade from rust is either keeping the blade coated in a thin coat of oil or force a patina on the blade (which will happen naturally over time anyway, but one can apply a patina by a number of methods).
