Jane and Mike, I love when you show us your shopping hauls! Obviously many items available are different for different geographic areas. (Don’t know why folks would not understand that. ). And I love that you take the time to show us the total cost breakdown for each country. It is so interesting! Thank you for sharing your hauls!
Me too love Jane and Mikes hauls and seeing all the French brands . That pack of lamb is great value .and yes Jane id love to see a Lancashire hotpot video.😊
Well done for prioritising healthy meals through frugal know how. I've always read your blogs when you were on the UK & now I thoroughly enjoy your youtube videos in Brittany. You both have worked so extremely hard over many years to build this wonderful life you now have. May you both always thrive & continue to have such a wonderful relationship. Frugality is about prioritisation, decisions & executing those decisions - you both excel in this field. We are also extremely frugal so thoroughly enjoy watching others who live as we do. Enjoy the fruits of your labour 😉
We spent a month in the EU,shopping and making our meals. Between Italy, Austria, Germany, France and Spain. In each of there were bargains to be had, and there were some things that were higher in price than the country before, or after that country. In France we had a fabulous vegetable, and fruit stand just outside our Airbnb at great prices, so we ate loads of fresh fruits and vegetables. In Austria we found a small local Turkish grocery store and the prices were great and we tried lots of new to us items. Shop the specials not matter where you shop, plan your menu around deals that you find, don't insist on a menu before finding the sale priced items 😋. Jane you are correct that you can see prices pretty much have gone up everywhere, just learn to shop wisely. Shop sales, special offers, and seasonally to get the best value for your money.
What you were trying to say is the cost of living is higher in other countries. Sort of like Tucker going to Russia and saying that food is cheaper. 134.00 isn't much for some people in a certain country, but, it may be their whole paycheck in another country. I'm in the U.S. and my income this week is 176.00, I have 400.00 worth of bills to pay this month, groceries are to expensive I get my 400.00 put together with a little set aside for savings. Although times are hard right now I refuse to get into my emergency fund, how do I know they won't get worse. I believe people want to think there is sun shine and roses somewhere else, and they we aren't all suffering. They see their neighbors with nice houses and fancy cars and think they are doing good not knowing that they are eating ramen every night and have maxed out their cards. They want to blame the leader's of their countries for high prices, and not see that it's every country going through the same thing. Thanks for the video.
Agreed. If you ever listen to Dave Ramsey or the oodles of financial advisors on RU-vid, you'll find lots of people 'living hand-to-mouth." I like living without debt and sleeping at night.
You got some great deals. You explained the difference in prices very well. The average person does not understand that just because what you pay for something is less than what they would in their country it isn't any cheaper for you. I feel ones food costs are very much subject to what one eats and if you buy at full price or wait for a sale. In todays world we really need to be watching for sales and watching for rebates and money back on store cards and credit cards (if you use)
Being American, please excuse me if you already know this. The cauliflower leave are edible and are great in soups and smoothies. Here in the USA people would throw it away or put it in a compost bin.
Hi from Nova Scotia today. That lamb was an amazing buy. Congrats on that! I’m certain you will enjoy every last morsel. Here in my house we are enjoying the literal “ fruits of our labour” in the form of frozen strawberries, has caps and blueberries from last summer. I feel so blessed each morning when I dip into my yogurt and defrosted berries.
I feel the same way about my lemon tree! Every day I pick 1-2 juicy, sweet lemon s. I got avocados from a neighbor last week. I just pinch myself every time. Feels blessed.
Great haul. Interesting to see the price differences for france and uk. From 2022 to 2023 our food bill was £19 higher, not the £880 more than i saw they were claiming it was .that was because like you we were going after the deals. I like to play the supermarkets at their own game your proving it can be done.
Thank you for clarifying that grocery prices can be different even in the same country/ a for areas of that country.I agree you really do need to shop around.I might have to check out the apps and put on my phone so I don’t miss extra bargains. Thanks for another few ideas.
Hello, I'm from Minnesota USA. We also are experiencing a hike In food prices, along with products across the board. My husband and I are retired. We live fairly frugal on our ss. We've been practicing putting up foods and supplies for several years now. I can say that we sleep much better for it. We worked hard to rid ourselves of debt. However, the rise in prices like electric and gas make for a competitive game. I personally like a challenge. It makes rely on my ingenuity. I love your RU-vid. You both are a relaxing couple to watch and listen to. Thank you for taking the time to reach out to those just learning how to maneuver through these trying times.
I am experiencing a seriously green-with-envy jealous pang about your bio crepe factory right down the road. "Too Good to Go" is not yet available where I live, but I'm hoping we'll get an app like this soon. Thank you for yet another inspiring video. Now I must go make crepes.
Jane, it is fascinating to see what you purchase. We also get food from various sources. Food is not cheap anywhere. Every country has varying incomes/cost of living/required expenses. It’s comparing apples to cotton to say someone else has inexpensive food. You are an expert household manager, and it is such a blessing to learn from you. 🌻
Great shopping haul. I just got 5 pounds (2.27kg) of potatoes for $1.49 CAD, 1.02 Euro, $1.11 USD.. also tins of "sockeye" salmon for $1.49 Canadian and I got points put on my grocery reward card as well. Side note of comparison: tins of "pink" salmon this weekend are on sale for $3.69... more than twice the price. I love stocking up this way.
I buy the leg of lamb roast and cut it up for a stew and save money. I add lots of potatoes and carrots. Have some leftover string beans that I'll cut up and add towards end of cooking.
Started to buy at local farmershops and a lot of time the prizes are really good and the quality is mostly better then in the shops. You really have to prepare yourself with a good list and a good menuplan to keep within budget.
Hello, food is getting more expensive by the day . I struggle with menu planning so need to look through your videos again for some advice . Have a lovely weekend and I’ll look forward to your next one xxx
How well you did for the money Jane. 😃 Especially such large amounts of meat that will no doubt go a long way. Meat here in the UK is so expensive now. Also olive oil has gone ridiculous. I'm like you these days and often swap what I would usually have bought before, for a cheaper alternative. Always nice to see you Jane. You're such a breath of fresh air. Thanks to you both for this video and for taking the time to price it all🤗
@@FrugalQueeninFranceWow, so no cheaper there then. Here it's around £5/£6 depending where you shop. I'm the same as you and just see what I can get for less. Currently I have a Liddl one, which is a combination of olive oil and vegetable oil combined at £2.25. Yes, you do what it takes to keep costs down.
It is true what you said, "Prices vary from country to country." I have to look at sale prices and other discount stores to find bargains just like you and Mike. Thanks for sharing and big hug to you.
I enjoyed watching this. The crepes made by local people are interesting -- well, the crepes themselves are interesting but the people who make them sound interesting with their cottage industry.
I appreciate your caveat about food prices relative to income at the beginning of the video. I run into that quite often in the U.S. where people might think prices are really inexpensive in certain states without taking into account the average salary in that state. The prices might seem low but they're not low for the people who live there. Thanks for sharing your content! I enjoy your videos!
I love watching you . I used to be a chef and run my own kitchen. So costing things out is second nature! My mother taught me to keep a budget book for home even though I’m retired I still do. I think budgeting should be taught in schools. Also if you’re on holiday and looking for gifts to take home make the supermarket your first stop you can get some really nice gifts.
Just love your French shopping hauls. This was very comprehensive and a really interesting selection of products. And your sausages made me envious as it brought back memories of driving throgh France in years gone by and eating them coked by roadside sellers who served them up piping hot in chunks of baguette. Oh the smell of sausage/herbs and garlic..... Mmmmm!! Nice one Jane and Mike!
I love your videos, Jane. I spent a lot of time in France when I was younger and I miss it SO much. I feel like I'm there when you show us every day life things like shopping and exploring the surrounding villages. I am especially fond of Bretagne. I remember having fresh crepes Bretonne folded around a fried egg with ham and cheese when I was there. Delish! I believe "ble noir" is "buckwheat" in English.
That lamb looks lovely. Difficult to find here in the US and so expensive. I am always envious of your lardons. Nothing like that exists here. Makes so much sense for cooking!
Yes please for the Lancashire hotpot or/ and lamb recipes. Have you heard of the water scandal that involved brands like Perrier, Vittel, Contrex, Hépar and Cristaline? Is that solved now?
What a great deal on the lamb! I’m in California and it tends to be pretty expensive too but I sometimes get it on sale as well. People always complain about the cost of meat, but I find there is usually something on sale if we’re not too picky. We have 6 people in our house so it’s very helpful to pick things up on sale and work our menu around that.
On the frugal vlogs from the UK I watch, I'm amazed by how much cheaper some of the food is there. The cauliflowers are really good at the moment aren't they? Our little local Carrefour contact, not usually a source of bargains, has had some dear little ones for €1.20 - I find it a struggle to get through a big one - with plenty of good leaves on too! Baked beans (those U ones aren't bad at all) freeze well, I've discovered. Still got lamb chops in the freezer from a trip up to the Bay of Mont St Michel last year, pré-salé ones from a little butchers in Cherrueix, a coastal village there. Only lamb we buy and eat here these days, a bit pricey but we eke them out and savour every mouthful. Roll on Easter! Blé noir, often called sarrasin these days, is buckwheat. Always enjoy your shopping hauls!
Hi jane and Mike ; great video as usual; even though lamb should be less exspensive here in New Zealand its not ; ridiculous prices, however my hisband and I love lamb so a real treat for us😊
Great buys!! We don't really have the cash back going on a store card here in the US. But a lot of credit cards have some type of cash back program. No where near 20-30% though. That's fantastic!!
I was using the " flashfood " app here in Canada but you had to pick up the food that day, so I was going several times a week and realized the cost of bus fare and time was not worth it in the end. I now try to stock up on sale items and cook meals cheaply as possible. Today I made 4 mince and onion pies in small tins to have 2 meals out of them, made a huge salad and we eat that for lunch every day. I have noticed that my recipes do cost more now with inflation, eg butter and eggs, I was paying $2.99 for butter it's now $5.00 when on sale, if not $6.50. Some of my dessert recipes call for a pound of butter { 2 cups ) so I'm not making them as often.
Good buy on the pork shank. I haven’t found lardons at the grocery store- I may just need to look harder. I find it quite interesting to see food ( etc.) prices in other areas. Thanks for sharing.
Love hearing how you get bargains, I feed 4 grown men so find it cheaper to buy whole chickens, leg of lamb, pork shoulders. I stocked up on massive leg of lambs as was super cheap at $8.99/kg in Australia. I get two meals and lunches out of the size I bought. Will definitely remember to look at the same time next year. I would love to see your Lancashire hot pot. Thanks Jane and Mike for all your hard work :) we are 5-7 years away from retirement so your videos are super helpful. Hope the girls are doing well❤
@@FrugalQueeninFrance Yes I do, I love her channel :) I found Recipe Tin Eats through her channel if you want to check that out, her meals are so easy and so delicious, my men love them :)
that's a good haul!! Ble Noir is Buckwheat...which is Gluten Free, I actually add it into my bread and cookies, gives a nuttier flavour. Unfortunately we don't have a SuperU close by or a L'Eclerc so I'd need to do a monthly shop or a big stock up to justify the Diesel.....if we are out an about tho I would combine a food shop with whatever we are doing.
Please, do the lamb hotpot and the leftovers make a lovely potato 🥔 topped pie ✔️ Very good haul of groceries and fresh produce. Those crepes will be very versatile for breakfast and desserts And the doggies are not forgotten😊
I do love a shopping haul! I was in Aldi today, planning on lamb shoulder for the w/end, but they were so tiny and almost £10! The aubergines were also v v small, priced at 95p, so left those as well. We love pork/ham hocks, but don't see them often, rarely at our butchers. I did find some stewing lamb, circles of lamb neck, will be lovely in the slow cooker. I always think the fresh fruit and veg you buy looks such a good size and really fresh.
You guys are SO inspirational and I just love watching your videos. Isn't is amazing what can be saved over a month, We are doing the same here in NZ. Keep up the good work🙂🙂🙂
Love that you say groceries aren't cheap for those that live in that particular country. Living in Spain my UK friends think it's cheap but we earn a third of Thier income so it's all about perspective
Thank you Jane and Mike so much for inspiring me everytime you put out a video. I do need it to stay on track. A question Jane, do you keep bones to make gelatine for the dogs? I do, our GSD has HD and he's still young (3 years) and I'll use my slowcooker(s) to make the gelatine and I'll freeze it and use it in his food to give him some extra gelatine so his body can use it where it's needed. Your dogs are small and I don't think they have issues but alas it's my couriosity ;-) Take care and stay safe, greetings from the Netherlands, Vleer xo
The lamb we’re able to get occasionally costs about 10.00 per pound. (Is that over 20.00 per kilo?) I don’t remember where it comes from but i think it’s imported, too. My husband loves the chops or i wouldn’t buy them. (I’m vegetarian) Fabulous haul! That will last quite awhile.
Very interesting. We always want to see you make dishes. I’ve never heard of the one you said if we wanted you to make it leave it in the comments. Yes please show us how to make it.
Great deal on the lamb. We only get the Australian lamb here in the USA but I don’t like the flavor of it-it’s too strong for me. I’m always excited when I see USA lamb and tend to buy it at any price.
Lamb is way to expensive here in New Zealand we have to pay export prices so it’s a meat we can’t afford , a leg of lamb is $50 or more depending on size
You have mentioned that watching the ads helps your income. Does it matter to your income if your viewers let the ads role before the video, after the video, or during the video? In other words, do you make more or less depending on when the ad roles?
