"Quand est-ce qu'on doit utiliser le verbe 'renifler' au lieu de 'sentir'?" "Renifler" is when it's you who's smelling something, for example "Je renifle la fleur" (I smell the flower - it's you who's smelling it) "Sentir" is when you have no other choice but to feel it (let's put this way), you're not smelling anything, it's the smell that comes to you. For example "Tu sens bon" (You smell good - you didn't choose to smell it, it's in the air) I'm not a good teacher, but hope I could help :)

Actively is when you do it which in english is expressed by the verb try/taste. Passively when you unavoidably feel the smell or taste of sth. For example, when you are sick (tu es malad et tu as de la fièvre, tu ne sens pas le goût de rien. When you are making some food and taste it to check if it is good, ready, salty, etc, in french you say this with the verb goûter: tu goûtes de la nourriture pour verifier si c'est bonne.
