Heavy makeup looks vulgar at any age and makes middleaged women look older

Also it is kind of ageist to judge women for wearing makeup in their 50’s. If it makes one feel happier to wear more makeup and to have fun with it, then why not!

Thank you, Marie-Anne. I spend more money on skincare products (especially moisturizers with SPF 50 or higher) than on makeup. Like you,I don’t use a lot of makeup, just a little mascara and some Vaseline tinted lip balm. I will try to brush my lips before putting on any lip product next time. Also, I needed to buy some shoes today and thought, “What would Marie-Anne do?” before purchasing a lovely pair of navy blue pumps. 🙂 You are such an inspiration!

True, I buy E.L.F. (eyes lips face). It's very inexpensive and I think it is surprisingly good for the cost. Most items can be about $3-4 dollars. They have their own website and are sold in some stores. I don't think I'll find a reason to ever spend more.

@@annoldham3018 I like the Rimmel blush. I think I was around 15 when I first used it and I'm quite a bit older than you lol. I always keep one as a handbag touch up along with a lipstick in a small make-up purse in whatever handbag I'm using that day. Sometimes those older brands are such good staples, and I don't think the price of rimmel has changed that much since I was a teenager lol

One nice thing about being older is that you don't need as much eye makeup. I think that may be because the eye socket is less plump and so it's already more defined. I focus on disguising blemishes and adding light to the skin, then liner, light lipstick and defining brows. When I was younger I had lovely full brows with a beautiful arch. Now they're disappearing!

GR CinqMars I agree. I am very fair as well. I was buying makeup recently to go to a wedding. Haven’t worn foundation for ages. I bought one from Clinique because the sales assistant was so helpful. @@MarieAnneLecoeur Yes, I do the no-makeup look. For many years I just did no makeup at all. My routine is similar to yours. Prime, mix moisturizer with BB cream, very lightly brush with tranluscent powder, hint of blush, a bit of eyebrow (powder not pencil), and mascara. Some occasions I may use a bit of eye shadow if I need some extra vavavoom. I love the no-makeup look. I feel more polished than when I used none at all. Yet I could never embrace the cosmetics mask so prevalent in the States (especially here in southern California). For a time I did enjoy drawing on the cat eye with liquid liner. Now that I'm in the second half of my thirties, that doesn't "glide on" easily, as you put it. So I let that go along with my long hair. After watching your video on the French chic hair philosophy, I've kept it above shoulder length and stopped highlighting.

Excellent video Marie-Anne! I love your beautiful pink, black and white backdrop and your new video format. Regarding makeup, I agree that too much is very aging. We have all seen "women of a certain age" (at least in Canada and the U.S.) wearing mask like foundation that ends at the jawline, powder that accentuates wrinkles and dark lipstick that bleeds into lip lines. I am 65 and suit bright lipstick, red or fuschia, but have toned this down to neutrals for during the day. I mix a high SPF moisturizer with my foundation and apply with a rounded sponge. I always wear powdered blush as I am very pale. My eyes are my best feature, so I use eyelid primer, a thin line of charcoal kohl pencil on the upper lid and mascara on the upper lashes. Sometimes I'll add a little gloss to my lips. I am definitely going for a more natural look as I age.

I am in my 30s, but I like such tips. The first wrinkles are already here and in the age of 30 I became rosacea 😔 Less makeup is difficult. In summer I dont wanna wear foundation, but my cheeks are very red, so I enjoy all the other seasons more. I prefer a light coverage, I like it natural and show my freckles, but I must cover my redness. The older I get and with rosacea I must be gentle to my skin and always wear sun protection. Sun protection and read the INCIS in your products is so important. And like you I dont wear much eyeshadow. I do not own palettes anymore, just single eyeshadows 😃

That Laura Mercier primer is really good - I worked on an LM counter very briefly, and clients in this age range were always very impressed with it. With foundation, how you apply it makes all the difference: with a beauty blender sponge, for example. This makes sure that the foundation is mainly where you need it. Definitely agree about Benefit eyebrow products - best I've tried. I tend to spend more on skincare now than I used to, but in some ways I am more adventurous. The trick for me is to do the whole look together: make up, outfit and how I feel that day, where I'm going etc. Thank you for doing a video for women over 50: I like all kinds of make up videos, but as you say, most are for women in their 20s, with looks that just aren't appropriate for someone older. Moreover, they use a lot of make up.

@@MarieAnneLecoeur I loved this video, Marie-Anne, because it was real and about your personal make-up style. As you've said there are some other wonderful ladies of our age group doing tutorials on YT. I think by listening to other women talk about their own style we also learn about ourselves anyway. It let's us know we are not alone and that, in itself, is so helpful. As for my make-up problems, dry skin is probably the biggest issue and finding the right level of foundation to wear. My skin is quite red & blotchy normally so I need a little more coverage. The other big issue for me is that my eyebrows are so thin now I have had to learn way of filling them in with trial and error to not look too artificial. A bit challenging sometimes but experimenting with application techniques has been the only way to learn what works best or me. Xx

You look beatiful, your makeup looks so fresh, I´m 64 and my routine is sunblock colored foundation, (French brand), eyebrown, mascara and lipstick, I should confess I love the red ones, I buy medium prices makeup, it works on me, and of course a good perfume, love perfumes. Good to hear about friendly vegan cosmetics.

I have to say I use way more makeup than you do because I love makeup and perfumes and because...that's how I roll in this life. I like the simplicity of your style, though. I have been following Hot and Flashy for some years and I like her channel very much. Another great channel and lady I love is Dominique Sachs. She is a beautiful woman and she is really great with all lifestyle and wellness stuff. Thank you for your video, I appreciate all your work and I wish you all the best. I also speak French and I love French culture (my writing is not very good, so I will continue commenting in English).

I am 63, American, and have never worn foundation and never will. I have never worn lipstick but may do a tinted balm or gloss. Doesn't lipstick just come off when you eat, drink, kiss, blow your nose, etc. ? I am mostly about concealer, mascara, blush and now brow color. I rarely wear sunscreen. I think I look a few years younger than my age and am pretty pleased.

I am a very pale redhead. I also live in the state of Georgia where it is hot/ warm most of the year. I use Clinique City Block instead of foundation. It’s a tinted sunblock with a high spf. The color is very sheer.

The pinks and navies around you are gorgeous, Marie-Anne. This video is right on time, you must’ve known I turn 50 at the end of this month! Your makeup is always perfect, so natural, but just right. This was a very useful video. I love a minimalistic makeup, especially very minimal eye, but a matte red lip always is so classic...my favorite. I do believe upper lash mascara is very necessary as we age. You shouldn’t see the makeup, just a better looking lady, is how I feel. I’m a huge fan of benefit eye bright! I’ve been using it for years. Silly thing, I’ve always been afraid curling my eyelashes, I don’t know why, it’s really silly. As I age, I think I’m afraid of losing any of those precious lashes. By the way, I could listen to you speak French forever! Thank you for another great video, Marie-Anne💖xx

Marie-Anne Lecoeur the flowers are really a beautiful addition! Yes, to keep my lashes supple, I sleep with an extremely light coat of Vaseline (truly the very tiniest amount) applied ever so lightly and gently with a Q-tip. Keeps them nicely moisturized. Thank you for adding in a little French for us, I only understand a few words, but honestly, I enjoy it so much. 💖xx

I noticed with my aging that my skin is more normal to dry. Now, I use more of a light texture foundation, but discovered By Terry CC cream. It feels light as serum and when it settles, it appears to blur the pores, but doesn't cover imperfections. It looks natural but a bit better. I like the CC serum also. Surprisingly, I started the "wing" look with my liquid eyeliner and I could skip on shadow, just add mascara. Beautiful video!

Bonjour! You are a joy to watch. I have reduced how much makeup I use and applying more the French philosophy way and didn't know it! I also buy more organic. I feel happier and more confident in my own skin doing that. Yes, the eyeslids are changing. Cheeks show bit more tiny veins and uneven color. Pores are more noticeable, so i need to find something to help minimize them. Joys of aging gracefully, ha. Currently using products from Bare Minerals, L'Bri, Burt's Bees, and Almay. Thank you for sharing! 💕

Great video! while I'm not quite at 50 yet,I'm more into natural-ish make-up looks, I take good care of my skin, and I use tinted moisturizer, nude lipstick day time, red or vamp lips evening, mascara, cream eye or neutral eyeshadows and blush on occasion.

I enjoy watching tutorials by Lisa Eldridge. She has a very light hand, which I appreciate. And she does makeup on all ages. I make RU-vid videos too, and I find that I have to wear so much more makeup for the camera, but it looks like almost nothing in my videos. Now that I am older, my eyebrows are my biggest problem area. Thanks for sharing your makeup story with us :)

My mothers generation (1930s born) she wouldn't be seen with no makeup ...even at home all day. Bare Minerals...is excellent for a no makeup look..I prefer IT for the face..CC cream as it has sunfactor 50 and very light..They do a great simple to use pressed mineral powder. ( from QVC ).. goes on well and looks natural. Wayne Goss has good advice for makeup on You Tube.

Bonsoir ✨ Thank you for this forum to share. I very much enjoy your humor, wisdom and knowledge for the art of feminine beautification 🥰 through personal style and claiming an authentic simple system to grace our lives through the stages of womanhood. I have always focused on inner beauty, knowing this part of me is eternal and to take care of my body which houses my spirit. My routine care focuses on eating well, exercising, nourishing both body and the face with oils with essential oils and facial masks, while apply minimal makeup because I believe I shine without it. Daily oil self body massages are essential ! For an occasion I may wear mascara, blush and a red lipstick - Chanel. Otherwise a clean face, face massage, and a lip emollient daily whether I’m home or out and about. 😘

My skin is definitely getting drier as I get older. I find I am buying less makeup and more moisturizers nowadays. A trick I’ve learned is to use very, very, light coats. If you use a brush, lightly stipple it rather than sweep it around to hide pores. I don’t use powders anymore, but if you do, put it lightly on the brush and gently roll it across your skin to keep it from settling in too much. Start as thin as possible and build on any places that need more. Ultra thin layers is how Leonardo painted. :-) I can also share some company information I have collected - All Cruelty Free: Hourglass (also has vegan and gluten free collections), Too Faced (also has vegan collection), CoverFX (vegan), Gabriel (vegan, gluten free), Marc Jacobs, Ilia, Anytonym, Juice Beauty, Mineral Fusion (most products are vegan), Tatcha, Bite Beauty, Urban Decay (has some vegan products), Dr. Hauschka (gluten free, most skin care, foundation, concealer, and eyeliner are vegan).

I stopped using foundation about two years ago. My skin is nice enough (I use Retin-A) and I think I look better without. I do use Burberry’s Radiance primer mixed in with my moisturizer. I put on about 50 coats of black mascara😉 because I wear thick glasses, loads of blush and RED lipstick everyday! I will look into the Bourjois lipstick as my YSL is hard to find now that I live in the US.

I am 58 and I am now only using Caviar sticks by Laura Mercier over the Tatcha The silk canvas primer on my eyes. It has made a big difference. No creasing and lasts all day. On my face I like Bobbi Brown moisturizing foundation and creamy blush. I have gotten away from powders accept for the bareminerals original as just a light dusting setting powder on my nose at the end.

Thank you! I just turned 60 and I quit wearing makeup a few years ago because it doesn't look good anymore. I had just given up until I saw your videos. Specifically, my skin has thinned and developed fine lines. The makeup sits in the wrinkles and makes me look worse. Also, I am a small framed woman, and my face now looks so bony now and the dark circles are terrible. Your look so beautiful and chic. That gives me hope. This is just what I need to be able to develop a new look.

I try to keep my skin moisturized and I notice my make up goes on much more smoother and the foundation won’t cake. I try to take care better care of my skin now that I am approaching my 50’s. I wished I had started younger but I think it’s never too late. Also like dressing we need to apply make up appropriate for our age. Nothing flashy, just keep it natural

Hi Marie-Ann, another great video - thank you. I swear that I'm French, even though I don't have French parents, wasn't born in France, don't speak French and don't have French citizenship. Not only does my approach to buying and wearing clothing and jewellery mirror the French way, my make up routine mirrors is the same as yours too (or nearly). I always use it to enhance my natural looks, not alter them. The only difference, I believe, between my approach and the more typical French approach that you have is that I don't wear red lippy (too harsh for my 'summer' colouring that suits pastels and paler shades) so I wear rosy pinks, and I do wear a bit of pale pink blush too, which I think warms up the face a little. I also brush my face with a little bronzer - again to add a touch of warmth. Other than that I go minimal. I never do what a lot of Brits do these days - wear a foundation mask, heaps of eyebrow pencil that makes the brows look drawn on (horrible trend of recent years) nor do I wear a lot of eye make up. Just a bit of mascara most of the time - not even shadow or liner. At 59 that approach works for me. Oh, just to add that I can't really be French - but only because I am rubbish at tying scarves (a natural talent with the French, I've found).

Bon jour!! I have noticed in my fifties I look better with slightly brighter lips shades and recently I have applied a small amount of soft peachy/pink blush and it has really brightened my face. It seems cheeks do not keep that youthful blush as we age. I have yet to try red lips but yours look fantastic!!
