CycleCamp reviews the features of the French MAS Mle 49/56 battle rifle in caliber 7.5x54 French. A bit of history, operating features and specifics on my new acquisition. We also open up the action to show the simplicity of it's components.

First video I have found that taught me, "As we learned" that the hammer needs to be down to disassemble. I just bought one, working on getting the bore cleaned up, and have a modified firing pin with a spring to avoid slap fire. Thank you for your video.

Very cool bill! You got a real winner there. Love how it's in immaculate condition for the period it stemmed from. Thanks for sharing! 👍

I have one in 7.62x51/308 and it shoots like a dream but mine was converted in France for the French Police and somehow it was sold as mil-surp to Century Arms and i was lucky to get my hands on one of the 250 of the police conversions in 7.62x51/308

The early Russian sks, had a return spring on the firing pin and early bolt and bolt carrier. I have a early Russian sks, carbine with the return spring on the firing pin. The sks is dated 1950.patrick

I wanted one, but I wanted one of the .308 conversions just because they had them. Yeah I know the conversions ruined the rifle, but I wanted one anyways.

Put the bolt and Carrier together and drop it in the rear of the reciever thumb it forward gently very simple. Putting em in one piece at a time makes it much harder...

R. Bethesdah Thanks for the tip, it also makes lining up the slots on the firing pin with the 'fingers' on the bolt carrier much easier!

cyclecamp1 mines a .308 and I have it running perfect. Hasn't jammed and pulls a respectable group at 400 yards...

half a mil ... is not half a mm ... it is half a thousandths ... "A thousandth of an inch is a derived unit of length in an inch-based system of units. Equal to 1⁄1000 of an inch, it is normally referred to as a thou /ˈθaʊ/, a thousandth, or (particularly in the United States) a mil."

Except that this being a french gun, and France using metric units, I actually did mean 1/2 a millimeter. 1/2 a millimeter is larger than 1/2 of an inch based mil. 1/2 millimeter is 0.019685 inches, or 19.685 mils. I apologize if my use of the contraction 'mil' for millimeter was confusing.

except the french were using machining techniques that used standard measurements ... not metric ... at that time. i said said nothing about 1/2 inch.

The French went to the metric system after the French revolution, and it was fully adopted by the end of 1875, years before this firearm was produced. Also, if you carefully re-read my comment, I did not say "1/2 of an inch", I said "1/2 of an inch based mil", i.e. 1/2 of a thousandth of an inch. The bottom line is that I meant 1/2 of a millimeter, and have already apologized for that confusion. Thanks for your interesting comments.

"The French went to the metric system after the French revolution, and it was fully adopted by the end of 1875, years before this firearm was produced. " yes they did ... which is irrelevant ... machining was done in standard inch ... not metric.

"The French went to the metric system after the French revolution, and it was fully adopted by the end of 1875, years before this firearm was produced." yes ... the did ... but that is irrelevant ... all machining was done in standard inch at that time. chill ... just trying to square you away with your info.
