indeed, cocotte is a cute-childlike way to say hen/poule . Pouleused to mean mistress, sometimes a professional mistress. The hen field also has men versions : mon coco, mon poulet...

My ex used to call me femme, as in his woman. It was sweet. You should check the Blush collection from Westman Atelier... the names are based on French nicknames. There is a blush called Minette.

Hi Rosie ! Super vidéo !! Personally my favourites are mon cœur and mon amour ! (Also, I'm french and ma cocotte is an equivalent of ma poule/poulette. I don't know if it's the same in every French family but in my family and that of my friends my cocotte is used by grandparents for their grandchildren.)

"Cocotte" was a way to say "luxury prostitute" or "courtesan". The term was used like that at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.

I am from Trinidad, a country with a strong French history dating from the 1700. My great grandmother who didn't speak very much English would call her grandchildren "cocotte." She was born in 1882 to a half French mother so I am thinking "cocotte" must be a centuries old term.

Re: Ma cocotte Cocotte can also be in reference to a pinecone. Although, that might be only in French Canada as I am not sure if they use that term in France (They probably use “Pomme de Pin” which the more traditional term for it).

You should listen to Bénabar's song "Les mots d'amour", he makes a funny list of nicknames given to partners. My chérie calls me Doudou. And Chou refers to the pastry. You have variations with chouquette as well. But nicknames vary a lot depending on the couple's history and references, some of the examples you gave can sound a little macho, impolite or kinky depending on the context like cocotte or poulette.

When we met a pretty girl in the street, between comrades we said "she's a pretty kitten" and there was nothing vulgar? it's like "friends" between French does not mean the same thing in English. For us "a friend" is a close friend with whom we share our bread. the origin goes back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries Fortunately, there is an ocean that separates the French, chaste ears from English-speaking Canadians. just as there is a sea "the Channel" which separates France from the perfidious Albion En Français : vous êtes dans la province du Québec , c'est une province francophone ? a moins que vous préférez ces maudits anglais ? les maudits français sont si sympathiques !!!!

Hey Rosie! I love your channel and have been learning so much about French culture, work, and life! I am a teacher from the US and hoping to teach abroad in Paris about 1.5 years! I want to get a head start on my French lessons so when I get there I can feel somewhat comfortable - or as comfortable as I can at that point. I am at the place in the language (Same as you knowing 0 from the beginning) and looking for where to start. I have seen you suggest lingoda, I have seen "French Together" marketing you learn key French conversational language - that they say makes up 80% of conversations, and I also saw the videos of you with your teacher Aurélie. I am wondering if you have any suggestions for my next steps to begin and learn French? Thank you

Yeah, "cocotte" is a cute nickname for "hen". Actually, the casserole dish "cocotte" comes from the meals "poule au pot" and "coq au vin" that are traditionnaly cooked in them.

My partner and I do the "mon coeur" thing, and he calls me "ma princesse". It's cute when he translates it to English which is funny since I would never want a native English speaker to call me "princess" lol. I struggled with the "I like you" thing when we first started dating and he expressed it as "on est attiré l'un à l'autre". Luckily he speaks English too so when I was afraid of saying really the wrong thing in French I just said it in English. 😄

Pour moi "Cocotte" renvoi bien à la poule car elles fond "cot cot". Ca peut être une autre origine mais en tout cas, c'est plus dans cette idée qu'on utilise ce mot.

Cocotte= poule =prostituée (autrefois). C 'est pour ça qu'avant on disait pour une personne qui mettait trop de parfum qu'elle sentait comme une cocotte ou la cocotte.

We usually just use cherie. Baby is a total no no, he hates it, says its totally disrespectful. We do have our own though, mine, a shortened version of my name and his from his love of all things vampire.

2 different meanings possible: - "ça roule, ma poule" roughly means "it's ok" / "ça marche" - "ça roule, ma poule ?" means "comment ça va ?" casual and not totally unusual these days but old-fashioned as well 🙂 (and you have to be sure to be close enough to somebody to ask him "ça roule, ma poule ?" for it not to sound quite unappropriate -say it's only for close friends. But tbh it's not the most trendy locution, the way I say it, it'd be used by "old" people addressing younger people while trying to sound cool -but it eventually only sounds quite ridiculous 😝... and I don't think "ma poule" has any actual role here (that's why the locution can be used addressing a man or a woman), I guess it's more for the rhyme, as in "à plus dans le bus !" (which btw can sound quite ridiculous as well 😄)

"cocotte" can be the diminution of "cocotte-minute" who means pressure cooker. When it's use to talk about women that's mean hen. Hen is "poule" in french and "cocotte" is "poule" with a sort of cute way or at the opposite a sort of insulting way. At first it comes from the fact that women are compare to hen because they speak a lot together and stay together like "hen" so it can be an insult when men says it with a negative way. Actually "cocotte" is more use by old creepy men now because it looks a little dumb. it's very interesting to see how foreigners perceive the french terms because they don't necessarily understand the nuances.😊

I’m not sure about the origine of “chou” because you can sometimes hear people calling others “mon petit chou à la crème.” “Chou” also means cute. Just be careful about some nicknames that may have a double entendre, like “poule” (prostitute) and, sorry to say... “minette” (oral sex performed on a woman or the female genitalia)

Cocote est une autre façon de dire poulette... au masculin on dit aussi mon coco. On peut ajouter mon petit ou ma petite ... c'est une façon de marquer son affection pour quelqu'un avec gentillesse et un brin d'amusement. I'm french and I never heard "mon bibou" 😆. "Ma belle" is more for friends than lovers, actually women says that to other women when they meet each other to speak with a very friendly way. "Ma chatte" is very vulgar and insulting, that's just mean "my pussy" actually we just say "mon chaton" for men and women because "ma chatte" mean completely different thing and it's very inappropriate to say that, just pervert men say it ! no one can say it without the sexual connotation. "ma crevette" is more for tiny women, because they are little or short we call them "crevette" to refer to their height or their low strength with a cute way. "je t'adore'' is also less than "I love you'' in french, best friend says "je t'adore" but not really lovers.

Agreed, I find it quite vulgar, unless you use it with your own kids (or grand kids) ... but cocotte is worse unless when a close friend or sibbling tricks you somehow and you'll react with "Alors là mon coco/ma cocotte ..." meaning (playfully) that you'll get revenge on them

Ma belle is really not common in France. In my whole life I've never heard anyone saying it. And ma chatte, oh boy, there's definitely no one using that one because it's vulgar. I'm sure you meant to say "mon chaton". But yeah try saying ma chatte, and you'll get your face slapped.
