One of my enthusiastic, youtube users (Mr. Stavros from Greece), emailed me, because he had the curiosity on how to get a sewn square corner; furthermore, how to do the double stitches or french stitches on-top view.
I've realized this would be an interesting and useful topic. The video shows what my inquisitive user requested, besides two samples more on how to reach lightly rounded corners.
Above all, this basic video shows interesting tips that would help a lot while performing real size upholstery projects.
I hope you find this video useful!
Cesar

I prefer the use of 'binding feet' that come with a single leg on the small foot. It allows me a wider view of what I am sewing because I can see the needle at any moment: www.ebay.com/itm/for-Pfaff-Walking-Foot-Binding-Presser-Feet-Industrial-Sewing-Mach-145-335-1245-/282353862547 If it would be difficult to get it, just cut off one of the legs with a small grinder (mototool). You are welcome anytime!

Some time during the mid 80's, as a teenager on summer break, I worked in an apholstery shop for my friend's dad. To me, I was fascinated with this stuff and wanted to learn it all. But as the "hired help" we boys normally did pickup and delivery of couches and chairs (all the heavy lifting and busy work sanding refinishing wood) and I never got to really sit down and watch and learn the coverings like this (like I always wanted to) and for the last 30 years I thought that chance to learn it was gone because the shop is gone. But now I find these videos... I can't tell you how much I APPRECIATE you posting these. THANK YOU!

Again if you had a servo motor of proper size and quality you would not have to turn the wheel by hand for one or two stitches. And would not take off fast like in this video.

Another great tutorial. Now i have a question. I see you do everything with a 1 needle sewing machine. My machine is a double needled machine, wich is great for stuff like in this tutorial. However, when I sew with 1 needle, to do normal stitching it seems the fabric is curling a bit (the upper layer gets longer), is that normal for this kind of machine? The presser foot of yours is really different and makes more movement. So, is my machine good to use for normal stitching, or only for finishing with double stich??
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 8 лет назад
+brutus850 S The 'twin needle machine' you have was designed to sew with the 'two needles to do the 'french seams/double stitches'...its 'feed dog' is wider and when you take off one needle, one side is curled by the teeth of this wide feed dog.
@brunos3682
@brunos3682 8 лет назад
Thanks, Is it possible to make my machine a 1 needle machine (Pfaff 145), or is that difficult? I must say, when using staples, the 2 layers don't move that much and my sewing looks kinda great! Thanks to your tuts..
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 8 лет назад
+brutus850 S I think the most advisable would be to get a single needle sewing machine. Try to use 'thin staples' and not so many, only when necessary...by using a pliers 'flatten' the staples to get a uniform surface.

Wonderful door card, I want to do mine, but at what point, and how, do you put the holes in for window winders and door handles? Thanks for another excellent video
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 7 лет назад
Thanks so much for kind remarks! Actually, it is not a door panel. it's just a demonstration on how to approach a corner by using 'double stitches'. What kind of car do you have?, thereby I would see the door panels on internet and give an idea on how to tackle this task.
@jesshothersall
@jesshothersall 7 лет назад
It's an old classic mini, so a simple design, mine is just one piece of leather with horizontal stitch lines, and the fittings (manual) screwed on through holes in the panel. From your videos I realise that putting the foam on the back of the leather, then stitching straight across (not the pleat/tuck, that looked too fiddley to start with), should give me a pleasant slightly puffed appearence on the doors.

@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 9 лет назад
Greg's Garage Anybody can do it following the right method (it's not the machine). In some cases is necessary to turn off the motor of your machine and slowly move the big wheel to do the sewing. I'm going to post a video on how to reduce the speed of a sewing machine (just changing pulleys)...I've also heard about servo motors that keep a very nice control of motor speed.

Balbino de Jesus Hi Balbino, When the student masters the techniques, it will not be necessary the use of staples. Staples, sometimes, help a lot to keep in place the pieces to be sewn and the work is nicer and easier. I also know the ways of doing piping directly to the top plate...occasionally, is valid when we do fast upholstery jobs and we do not need so much precision...I am also going to teach these fast techniques I already did (38 years ago) when I worked in different upholstery shops.

i love your work,can you tell me is that a ball point pen you use to mark the lines for the stitching,also when you do tufting you use the cm instead of inches,hear in the u.s. where customed to use inches so dont have clue on cm measurements
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 8 лет назад
+gerald dombrowski An upholsterer should know both measure systems...I feel more comfortable with the metric system...I think, it depends on the country where we are located. That pen is called 'silver marking pen for leather'

@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 8 лет назад
@evolutionbags
@evolutionbags 8 лет назад
gracias César muy amable como siempre, efectivamente el ancho de la puntada es de 7mm aproximadamente

You're the best. I really like to watch your videos everytime you teach me a lot. I just started sewing from a half year ago and just learned it by my self watching your videos, i'm from Mongolia. Do you make that glue you are using your self? Is it possible to share how it does? Please. I want to show you my works because your are my teacher, they are on my fb page.

Hi cechaflo, I want to first say thank you for the informative videos on upholstery, they are very helpful. I wanted to know what sewing machine you use on upholstery? My sewing machine seems to get jammed while sewing vinyl materials. Also, what size of thread do you use in this video? Thanks again -Mack
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 8 лет назад
Hi Mack, I'm glad the videos are helpful! The machine on this video is an industrial Pfaff 1245-706/47(old version) I'm using a polyester thread number zero(here in Mexico)...think it corresponds to 207 in USA. What's really the problem of your machine? Perhaps I could give you an idea to solve the issue. You are welcome!
@mackharrison9906
@mackharrison9906 8 лет назад
+Cechaflo I believe that the thread is was using was too thick. I have brother sewing machine, model number LX3014. I don't think I can adjust speed of sewing foot. Any suggestions ? thanks again.
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 8 лет назад
I now understand, your sewing machine has been designed for light materials...the feed dog teeth are low and thin and do not drag enough the vinyl material which is thick. If possible try to get a machine for heavier materials.

Hello, please can you give the name of the type of glue that you are using in this and other of your videos - to paint over the main seams in both leather and also vinyl it's the same glue but is it vinyl cement or some other type? Thanks so much for your videos they are wonderful!
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 7 лет назад
It's a 'solvent based yellow glue' most of the upholsterers, shoemakers and leather artisans use. I'm located in Mexico and trade marks are different. So, to have an idea, please, check: angelusdirect.com/products/all-purpose-shoe-cement www.ebay.es/itm/Petronios-Master-All-Purpose-Cement-Glue-Shoe-Repair-Adhesive-Glue-4-oz-/112032405167 www.homedepot.com/p/DAP-Weldwood-32-fl-oz-Original-Contact-Cement-00272/100125525 www.dap.com/dap-products-ph/weldwood-landau-top-trim-high-heat-resistant-contact-cement/

Exclusive Customs Upholstery It's for a pfaff 1245-706. A lathe operator did it for me, here, in Mexico. But, you could get one in the aftermarket and cut the little legs off with a mototool. Check ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/PFAFF-INDUSTRIAL-WALKING-FOOT-MACHINE-BINDER-FOOT-SET-fits-PFAFF-1245-/300958087030
