I try to imagine the faces of french tourists in London, coming to Buckingham palace to watch the changing of the guard and seeing French republican guards at the gate 🤣🤣🤣
@StephaneCalabrese they're not either! They're the five regiments of foot. Coldstream, Grenadier, Scots, Irish and Welsh. They're only ever the 'King's Guards' when they're performing that particular ceremonial duty outside a royal palace!
I think it's great that French troops are happy to guard our Royal Family. I bet all of the lads from both countries are having a whale of a time together.
In his memoirs Wellington admitted that without the timely arrival of Blücher and his 50,000 Prussians he would have been defeated. Well, finally there is rugby to compete
Britain was even at it's peak, primarily a naval force, and empire of trade, not a land power. We never had a vast standing army like France, Germany and the like.. because we've largely never needed one. In every fight worth fighting, we've/we'll never have to fight alone.
Translation ; A little of the entente cordiale between the Brits & French LOL! translation - When a British officer challenged Surcouf's nobility with these words: "You, French, you fight for money. While we English fight for honor! » Surcouf replied: “Everyone fights for what they lack. '😁 WE love each other really ;)
Bzee ...... How old would I now be to have been at Dunkirk ? The "British point of view" .......you mean the very countries that liberation by Brits, Americans and Canadians in order to free Europe was launched from ? The men of my Grandfather's generation risked their lives and fought not in Great Britain, but in Europe and North Africa ! If on the other hand your forebears had said they were happy for a dictator to tell them what to do, it would have saved a lot of lives and considerable treasure. Still you have the EU to capitulate to and collaborate with now so you should be happy 😘✌
The French are participating because of the 120th Anniversary of the Entente Cordiale between, the UK and France. The Republican Guard (Garde républicaine) is part of the French National Gendarmerie. It is responsible for special security duties in the Paris area and for providing guards of honour at official ceremonies of the French Republic. One can expect to see them wearing their typical ceremonial uninforms when performing the Change of the Guard. I personally think it's a great move. Not surprised of the large amount of antagonism reflected in many of the comments. Speaks for itself.
The french created the entente, 1904 with Russia, solely to benefit france. Remember that Britain joined last 1907. We were bribed and coerced because of promising Belgium their neutrality. Pointless war.
What a beautiful thing! It sends a lovely message. This history between us and France is through Royalty, the people were not at war. We are Anglo Saxons ourselves and were once the migrants. I think it's one in four Brits who can trace their Ancestry directly back to the Huguenots who fled France due to religious persecution in the 1600's. Anything that celebrates our commonalities rather than our differences is a beautiful thing, we're all distant cousins at the end of the day. After all the "historic" things I have lived through in my lifetime, (pandemic anyone?) and what we are on the brink of experiencing potentially from one European lunatic, I'm making a conscious decision to embrace anything and everything that joins us in friendship, rather than separates us. 🇬🇧 🇫🇷
Good to see these two countries despite many years of conflict in the past they still have each other. Remember, the French imperial Guards considered to be the best during 18th century, but later on defeated by the Duke of Wellington with his Red Coat army together with the Great Prussian Army. Nevertheless British and French now considered brothers.
I agree. That would even be fun. Their ceremonial units are high quality. Just trying to imagine the Danish Guards marching to and from Buckingham Palace. Would confuse quite a few tourists and them telling their folks at home that they could bear witness that thew "English Guards" hat new uniforms and blue instead of red.
@@xusmico187 France and the UK were the top 2 powers for centuries. Where did YOU study history? These two countries alone shaped the world and cultures as we know them all across the globe, it's quite obvious and easy to recognize if you have a tiny bit of honesty.
Still dreaming? The days of British empire and French gloire are over. Other nations took over. Our duty now is to stop RuZZia, not daydreaming of a past long gone. Both France and Britain are medium sized European nations. Not the US, not China, not India. Size matters more than quality. Otherwise Switzerland would be a world power.
@@xusmico187 Maybe in books and not american ones... France was the 1st european superpower many times in History, during almost all the reign of the capetians which, let me remind you, lasted for 800 years, making it the longest reigning dynasty even to this day despite the 1789 Revolution. Just some examples : France started the crusades with the preach of Clermont in 1095. Alone at Bouvines, in 1214, Philippe Auguste defeated the coalition of flemish cities allied to the king of England John Lackland and the Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV, forcing upon the king of England the Magna Carta, which gave all the power to the parliament up until this day. The same country ended the Spanish Empire at Rocroi, with the prince of Condé under the reign of the Sun King and ended the Holy Roman Empire at Iéna in 1806, under Napoléon.
I think this is a great touch. Ok yes, one thousand years of rivalry culminating at Waterloo, but even in between bouts of war there were periods of peace and friendship. The two countries fought so often because they shared similar strategic interests. The softening in relations started before the Entente, with British and French forces fighting together in Crimea against Russia (and the Ottomans?) If we two could recover our collective balls and imitate our ancestors (in some respects) we'd both be much better for it.
Imagine just as little as 120 years ago, this wouldnt have been possible let alone thinkable. Us Europeans really came a long way, glad we stopped war as a hobby.
“The more blood they [the English in France] shed, the crueller and more ruthless they become. They are fiery and furious, they quickly grow angry and take a long time to calm down.” - Jean Froissart, Chronicles. Book I. 1420.
Perhaps if the Sun broadcaster knew his history he would know that Napoleon was defeated by and allied army. Plus the final defeat was a direct result of the input of the Prussian army led by Blucher
Britannia and Marianne living together as neighbors. Not so unusual, as Napolean III came to Britain to live in exile after being deposed and his son died serving with the British Army in Africa in the 1870's.
Correction: British grenadiers had been around for at least a century before the battle of Waterloo. Each regiment of the British army contained a company of grenadiers - the tallest and strongest men in the regiment whose original job was to throw grenades and evolved in the elite, assault troops of the regiment. The "regimental" grenadiers wore bearskin hats in the American Revolution at least 40 years before the battle of Waterloo. P.S. It was the 52nd foot (the Oxs and Bucks) that defeated the French guards at Waterloo. Another example of the slap-dash superficial research that characterizes today's media. Makes you wonder what else they didn't get right.
Why should they stop them, leaving their shores? I don't believe that France ist in need of immigrants, especially migrants that don'r want to live in France!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Can the British Police stop anyone from leaving the shores of Briton? Is smuggling alive and well on the island of Brittain? Since when is France or the French Police responsible for Brittain's immigration problem?
@@hobgoblinhollow4966 I've only heard one other person refer to Switzerland as "Swissy Land" and talk about the Pharaohs and that is Dr. Sean Hross. I assume you watch him too?? Fascinating man!
He's so right that every day I dedicate time to verify and confirm Homie is legitimately not on some BS. Strangely, it was William Blake that made me understand illusory
Mon dieu! More daftness. Maybe we could ask for a reciprocal arrangement and deploy Royal Marines on their beaches to stop the uninvited and unwelcome guests the French seem only too willing to help on their way to Blighty?
@@TheCatBilbo Rishi Sunak's parents and all his grandparents are from India, so he is not British and will never be British. If he were born in China, would he be Chinese?
I think it's a wonderful message of friendship between the UK and France . It's a wonderful message of partnership and alliance between the 2 countries . 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Every European country is working with the World Economic Forum+United Nations to isolate its citizens in 15 minute ghettos with absolute control via central bank digital currencies and social scoring systems. The whole of the hitherto free world, not just Europe.
It's funny that the British Army also beheaded a King. That's why it's Royal Navy, Royal Air Force but British Army, They never forgot and they should never forget who has the power in Britain.
The Gendamerie are part of the army not the police force. If you are in the police and get pulled over by the gendarmes (or vice versa) they will do everything in the power to give you a fine etc.
All the Guards regiments wore bearskins before Waterloo, but this was limited to the Grenadier Company of each regiment. After Waterloo the eight centre and the light companies wore the bearskin.
A wonderful spectacle, but the commentary is deeply flawed. The 1st Foot Guards, that under Peregrine Maitland, rose from reclining positions and fired on the Garde Imperiale, were mistakenly thought to have defeated the bearskin-hat wearing Grenadiers of the Old Guard. They beat the Chasseurs of the Middle Guard, that did not wear the grenadier bearskins. The Old Guard remained in reserve in the vicinity of Napoleon, and was killed piecemeal in a dogged retreat, defending every inch of their retreat, but to no avail, as the rest of the French Army simply dissolved in defeat and vanished. The 1st Foot Guards, under this mistaken impression, re-styled themselves the Grenadier Guards, thus becoming the first British Grenadier regiment 56 years after another Commonwealth unit had been formed into a Grenadier regiment (the distinction is that of an entire regiment being designated a Grenadier Regiment, while right from the beginning of the concept of grenadiers, there had been grenadier companies within Fusilier or other line infantry regiments). The grenadier company of the Grenadier Guards were the first to wear the bearskin hats, but soon, the entire regiment began wearing it, and were followed by the Coldstream Guards and the Scots Guards respectively; when the Irish Guards and the Welsh Guards were formed, they followed suit, and began wearing the bearskin hats. None of the Household Guards other than the 1st Foot Guards fought any unit of the Garde Imperiale, the 1st Foot Guards never fought the bearskin hat wearing grenadiers of the Old Guard, but it does make for a ripping good story.
It's to celebrate the anniversary of the Entente cordiale. Jesus Christ, just use your brain for like five seconds, this comment section really is full of morons
The French have been our pals since the 1820s. They’re a bit more reliable - and punctual that the ‘Murcans. Good soldiers from a terrific country. Why not?
I think the French will take it as serious as any VIP guards. More so due to the massive history and rivalry between them and Britain. Bet they will not allow anyone inside Buckingham due to the fact they don’t want to go home in shame for losing to Britain
We bailed them out two times in 120 years. America bailed them out in Vietnam and they get to guard the king. What the hell is going on with the military.
