I think some Americans may know the proper pronunciation, but don’t want to seem pretentious pronouncing them the correct French way when they don’t actually speak French. Probably silly, but I would feel so weird ordering a croissant the correct way when you’re right that every American pronounces it “criss-aunt” 😂 anyway, loved this video.
this was such a cute video! I'm learning French now so thank you for your reassurance. I taught dance for a few years including ballet terms so it was nice to know I pronounced the terminology correctly :)
What I find difficult after learning some French, is pronouncing French surnames of fellow Americans. I’m tempted to always use proper French pronunciation, but many Americans with French ancestry pronounce their last name in an Americanized way. Example: Dubois. I want to say Dubwa instead of Duboyse
This was a fun video! As a French language learner, my accent is my biggest obstacle. I appreciate your lighthearted approach. Another mispronunciation is French place names that have been given to cities in the US. (for example- Versailles, Kentucky)
I blame American Commercial companies. If they would learn to say it right then we would know. The french that I know I got from Miss Piggy, The episode of the Nanny with the French Tudor (Je t'adore = Shut the door; I know it doesn't, but it was funny), and Beauty and the Beast. And that one moment in the Little mermaid with the Chef and Sebastien. Your Spanish is pretty good. I was born in Spain the transplanted into the States and then I learned Spanish with an American Accent ( in middle school), so now I'm trying to relearn with a Spain accent. lol
Love your channel, Lucie. I pronounce all those just correctly living in bilingual Brussels, but still found it funny and entertaining. I am curious about French Christmas/new year's eve celebration, habits and traditions. It would be great to learn more about your habits. Travel to Paris is my fave fun activity on weekends, but it does not provide as much insight on French habits as you do. So many thanks for this channel. Best wishes from Belgium.
This helps me understand French pronunciation a bit more. Thanks. I like hearing natives of whatever language Im learning pronounce English words with their accent because it teaches me what sounds they have to our alphabet. I also use my background in Spanish to help me understand French words sometimes. My first language is English but I understand Spanish a little bit. French was more intimidating to me than studying Chinese or Korean but after taking a year break from it, I missed it and am enjoying it more.
I was pronouncing La Croix (some Americans try to pronounce it French and it sounds awful, “la craw”) correctly but people would tell me, no, the soda is not named after French but is a town in Minnesota, where the brand is from- and THEY pronounce it like “la croy”. I have mixed feelings because obviously a proper noun is pronounced however the person or place bearing that name claims it, but it’s still wrong! 🤦♀️
I can speak to La Croix. It was made in La Crosse Wisconsin which is off the St. Croix river (pronounced like Crow-I) so they combined it to La Croix and that’s why we say it like that vs the French pronunciation, but we sometimes like to say the French pronunciation too for fun. I’m not sure if they still do but they used to have the flavors in French on the cans too like grapefruit and pamplemousse 😊
Holaa!! I just found your channel and love it!! Y muy buen español!! Soy de Puerto Rico and I’ve just started learning French so this video was so entertaining to meee🔥🔥🧡🧡
I’m an Armenian American and I’m always mindful of how I pronounce French words since learning some French in school. I find it easier to pronounce French since I speak Armenian.
Merci Lucie, une vidéo parfaite pour les vacances haha ! Le pire est quand les Américains disent 'Parry' au lieu de Paris, mes oreilles pleurent haha ! Faut faire une vidéo des erreurs que les Français font en Anglais maintenant ! Bon weekend Lucie !
I am American and my daughter knows the proper way to say "croissant" but I never pronounce it properly unless I am in a French cafe. Which is when she decides to say it in the most ridiculous Americanized cartoon French accent ever. She's little, so it's cute...for now.
You guys are so cute!!!🤗🤗 I was really trying to learn the French pronunciation to sound correct, which is important, and to boast a bit 😉😁😆😂at how I can pronounce French words/names correctly. By the way, could you do this kind of video again but do the pronunciation about three times. You guys did the pronunciation only once and it was hard to catch. Do it slowly by breaking up the word, otherwise it’s really difficult for us to understand and get the correct way of pronouncing. Appreciate this video and once again you guys are awesome 👏👍
Des bisous and thanks for watching!
@@Edukalebylucie ahah lucie comme cette blague ici : what do u call a person who speaks 2 languages ? bilingual what do u call a person who speaks 3 languages ? trilingual what do u call a person who speaks 1 language ? AMERICAN
For Spanish speaking people its a bit easier to pronounce some french words because many sound almost the same as well as similar....Nike the way you thought it was pronounced was the same as many East Coast americans especially in the 80s.... I still say NIKE not NIKEY ☺ as for Croix....We hear the words: Island of St. Croix (Croy) pronounced this way for decades with nobody correcting our mispronounciation... It just gets repeated and taught the wrong way.
