Check out these French word pairs that sound very similar but aren't quite the same. They aren't homonyms though. Listen closely, the vowel sounds are different.

Yes: in your region they're both pronounced "poigné", whereas in mine, those would make 3 different pronounciations.

Oh definitely! Collar and color would make a good pair. Tom has a lot of trouble hearing the difference.

I have better: verre/vair. Cinderella never ever had slippers made of "verre" but slippers made of "vair"! If only the translator had understood! Children all over the world would not falsely believe that Cinderella has slippers made of glass! They would know that Cinderella has slippers made of squirrel fur. And, yes, Cinderella is a French fairy tale.

Poignet and poignée are pronounced the same by 99% of the French population, I've never heard someone pronouncing it differently

Not 90% ! Most people “above the Loire” do so ! I’m from Brittany and move to Paris when I was 13 and I definitely say the 2 words very differently. My best friend is from Toulouse though and that’s another story 😅

I pronounce them differently. My mother was born in Nantes (though she's lived in several different parts of France, and we now live in the UK) and the family house is in Brittany, though I've never actually lived in France, only in the UK

No the vast majority pronounce it differently, some region doesn't, like in the south of France or around Calais but most of us do pronounce it differently.

Born and raised in Anjou (western France), I can assure you poingée and poignet are definitely pronounced differently.

But to, too, and two are homophones and are supposed to sound identical in English (just different spelling, and there are those in French too, like vert/verre). The examples in the video are actually pronounced differently. ;-)

Those are actually homonyms and have the same pronunciation. The words in the video have different vowel sounds!

@@OuiInFrance yes in the standard pronunciation, but in the south we tend to pronounce the the e at the end of verre, making it a 2 syllabus word
