It’s good that you mentioned how you tied your skates because it makes a huge difference in skating. Here in the US (Texas), a lot of people wrap the laces around the back of their skates in order to make them tighter and I don’t think they realize how inhibiting it is. Great video! 🤘🏻

there is a simpler answer to everything... practice. People probably think they are going to learn all these tricks by watching the videos and going to their local busy rink once a week. No chance in frozen hell. 3 times a week x 2 hours is the bare minimum if you want to advance.

I wish I could download your skating knowledge into my brain! I’m 50 years old and for the first time in my life I’m learning how to skate and play hockey. Wish I had started when I was young. It’s tough being 6’4” and 260 pounds learning how to skate. Sprained my wrist and my back falling a few times. I’m looking to practice skating about twice a week in lessons and then during my learn to play hockey course. I’d love to be able to do the hockey stop. I was at a lesson today and got half of it. But I get terrified when I have to lift my back skate to get into the position to slide on the outer edge. Hope it comes with time.

Practise your glide on backward outside edge, around the circle (right shoulder toward the centre), until you are comfortable on it. Weight goes back almost as if just getting out of a chair. Once your balance is good, dare to add power. Consider a full face cage when learning backward crossovers - once you hit the power stroke just right the acceleration can be a surprise, and I would have broken my jaw twice because when learning I wasn't leaning back enough.

Coming from inline skates I don't quite understand how hockey skates work. If I tie laces too tight then there isn't forwards flex and laces bites into my leg very painfully. However if I make them loser then ankle is too lose side to side. I think the size of my shoes is just perfect. Maybe I need stronger ankles for ice skating.

Figure skaters' advise is to have minimum of socks on, like a thin pair and have the skates tight also in size, so I'm confused
@NagyerdeiKorisok
@NagyerdeiKorisok 2 года назад
That's a good advice if you're about to do tricks, because double socks slide on each other., making you have less control. However when you're renting skates, the chance of doing tricks is minimal, but the injury because of all those plastic parts are higher, so it's probably better to have some extra protection.

Depends on what your goals/plans are. I drive a Zamboni at rink but only recently started ice skating so my info is purely observational. If you're just wanting to have fun/learn basics then you have plenty of ice time but if you're wanting to actually play ice hockey at a remotely competitive level you'd want a good deal more and for it to be in a lesson format (learn to skate classes at first but definitely private lessons). I take my 7 and 4 yo out just about every week for 1.5-2.5 hours of public skate sessions and once I got them into 30 minute LTS once a week I saw their skills and confidence skyrocket.

# 1 - don't use rental skates; [here, anyway] they prefer to have the blades dull (for liability reasons), and a dull blade can't grip the ice; you can't do anything (& it's dangerous). Even low-level skates to buy [FROM A SKATE SHOP WHERE THEY FIT THE SKATE TO YOUR FOOT] are not expensive, and are so much better than rental skates; the difference is night and day.

@lokei1326
@lokei1326 2 года назад
No and yes. CoG is the same, body mechanics (how you push, posture, etc) are similar. The feel is totally different, stopping is nothing alike...it's hard to put into words. I skated in-line until around 16 then got busy with work, hobbies, girls, and stopped. Ice skated the first time when the rink I resurface at closed last March and it was rough but the second time I got on ice it felt a lot better (the ice being fresh the first time made it hard to balance on dull rental skates) and now, less that 2 dozen skates later I move fairly well.
