I love, love, love this. All the passsion at a pace, nice and easy even in tension. I can feel the weight in the melody. The lyrics are perfect, both in vision and terms. Makes me want to be more. Y'all do realize if it was up to you we'd be home yesterday? But not about us, bc Jesus deserves more. This kind of music makes the journey bearable... it's hard to be bored or frustrated with the tarrying of the Spirit for more when there's music like this on the waves.

Surely if there is one thing we could all have learned from 2020 it is that sitting in front of a screen - and being an active member of a church - are very different things. But did we actually learn the lesson? What role will screens have once it's possible to meet as often as we wish and once all age groups can safely be at church? How will churches use the internet in an era in which we hopefully have a fresh realisation of what church is? Before we think about that consider how we acted before the pandemic. How did we use the internet? What did the way in which we used the internet say about what church is? Most churches chose to put their sermons online as either just audio or video or both. What were the effects of doing that? The first effect is it separates the preacher from those who make the preaching possible. Preachers can only prepare their messages because their families and others in the church contribute to ensure that they can focus on the work of preaching. But that’s only one lost dimension - when a preacher preaches in a church the truth is more than a set of ideas - it is embodied in the congregation present. If God the Father had been happy for the truth to be given to us only as a disembodied set of ideas he would not have sent his Son to live a human life. So preaching put online is disembodied - dehumanised. What about “worship”? Worship online is perhaps even worse - a worship leader is NOT a talented musician who can facilitate sung worship - a worship leader is a person whose mature Christian life God wishes to amplify - why? - because God wants worship to be embodied. A worship leader’s life is the product of the way in which he or she was discipled by others in the congregation and beyond - and when finally such a person leads sung worship he or she is only able to lead worship because an amazing number of people work incredibly hard to make it possible - audio, perhaps lighting, projection, venue setup - when “worship” is put online it is divorced from all that. The people who tune in are more often than not completely unconnected with the person leading or those to whom their leading is a gift. We may have known what we wanted to do - we want people to know that Jesus is lord - that he is the truth - that God is love - that God wants to be reunited with people - but we also want people to understand that Jesus is God made human - that obedience is about being the fullest human - an essential part of a whole - that it is not something that can be lived out in private. It isn't that we are trying to tell people that faithful Christians go to church - it is that we want to act as if people who are in Christ ARE THE CHURCH - that's why we gather - to learn to better be what we already are. So what can we do? Isn't the internet a helpful way of reaching the world - drawing people to church? Of course it is! Our problem isn't that the internet isn't useful to the cause of Christ - our problem is that because of inadequacies in our faith and in our understanding we can’t seem to correctly identify what the cause is. One general principle we could adopt is that while there is nothing that can replace being physically present we can at least seek to present a REPRESENTATION of the truth embodied. If we choose to put preaching online can we show wide shots of the congregation - if it's worship we can mix it with prayers prayed by others in the congregation etc. We can bring outreach work to life - showing that when the church helps people it's not general charity work - it's believers working side by side - loving each other and in so doing drawing the world. Whilst we absolutely must love the world John 13:35 says that it is by our love FOR EACH OTHER that others will know that we are followers of God. Why have I posted this here - under this song? Because I believe the big charismatic churches have failed in these things most of all. They sign people up to their brand - to their TV content - people who live in other countries - to paid Netflix style subscriptions. "Here you go - all the worship and preaching you could ever want - and presented by people who do both better than anything your local church could do”. Do they stress that participation in one's own local church instead of accessing church online is a central plank of growing to be mature? Is there a bigger lie than that there is a better way to become a mature disciple than faithful service to a faithful church - and service to the world? The final chapter in this business is that people withdraw from their local church - leave their jobs - leave all relationships in which they were making a contribution and being discipled - sign up to some full time course because the grass seems greener elsewhere (I’m not saying people shouldn’t ever move to better churches - I’m talking about how one grows as a believer and what an appropriate church relationship looks like) - uprooting themselves from what God intended to use to grow them - to be part of some multi year course. (THIS is where the internet could be used better - leave people rooted where they are but give them extra help - foundational teaching and ministry skills). Online content which is designed to induce FOMO - which addicts people to disembodied warm fuzzies - or in non-Charismatic circles to believing that knowing God is about a wad of disembodied head knowledge - is irresponsible - and those who serve themselves (while claiming to do all they do as servants of the wider church - LOL) will one day answer to God for their “fruit”. All this of course leaves Christian Music Industry 2.0 - version 2 being worship music - with some serious questions to answer.

Beautiful song, but I really do pray that we'd quit writing lyrics that ask God for something that's already been given. Why are we trying to conjur up some wind or move that has already taken place and is currently active, but for those who have ears to ear and eyes to see alone. It's like we're placing accountability on God, like we're waiting for Him to do something?? The Holy Spirit has already been poured out, is already moving, and has already come to the church. He's just waiting on us.
