Van Mildert in my experience was a very high percentage of students who didn't go to private school and liked to work hard and play hard. So "normal". Same with Aidans!
Thanks for giving at least an idea of the 'stereotype' for Aidans as I find it frustrating that no one seems to even have an opinion about it! It's worse than having a negative opinion.
Aidan's is at the top of the hill, so the steps are a good regular exercise! In my time it had the LOUDEST college balls in the entire uni, but it's very work-focused (work-hard, play-hard). Aidan's and Cuths used to be the two societies and Cuths referred to Aidan's as it's 'fallen sister' because it went collegiate and mixed. It's one of the older ones (it's moved. It used to be in The Bailey until the bespoke college was built at the top of Windmill Hill). It has some of THE best views over the city, is within a quick walk of the main Library and is perfect for science studies as its close to that area but not IN it. I did philosophy so I'd picked the college furthest from my department but I enjoyed the stroll into town (whether via the main roads or, when the weather was good, down via Prebends Bridge, along the Bailey, through town and across Elvet Bridge) The college library has great views across the city when you're struggling to think of an answer and need something to look at, IT is well served and because there's a high sports interest there's a good gym. I spent many a night with students from all years arguing over some concept and ended up watching the sun come up over the cathedral and castle and I never tired of that view. Gave me some perspective. It's terrible at advertising itself but I can recommend it whole-heartedly based on my experience. Students were great, atmosphere conducive to the work-hard/play-hard ethos and I did two degrees based out of there and still feel a great loyalty to it. Worth checking out, especially if you want all the advantages of college but also somewhere you can retire to that's away from the crowds.
I'm hoping to study English at Collingwood this October, and I was really nervous about the Collingwood rep of being too sporty. But I am super glad that you put up this video because I too, am a drama nerd
daisytallulah be open to all people! You probably won’t become best friends with the first people you meet so make sure you search for people that have things in common with you instead of shutting down
for some reason I thought mildert had a reputation for outreach but looking back I think that might have been a lie they told us to get us to volunteer...
Slidetotheleft I do have a quick question if you wouldn't mind answering - what's it like sharing a bathroom at collingwood? Not sure what to expect :,)
Lily L not gonna lie sometimes it can be a little gross but honestly you get used to it. I’ve seen some pretty gross bathrooms in my time so I was fine but also I did know some people that only used the bathroom in the lobby when they went to meals 😂😂 It really depends how fussy you are
hey, as an international student myself 10 years ago, i have to say Durham isnt very popular among international students as the majority of students are english. but it is a great environment for you to learn the english culture and in case english is not your first language, you can improve your english real fast
Azalea Lusi don’t be honestly! i’ve seen many students of all different races mixed together and the Teikyo Japanese Uni also means that you will not be the only one :)
Hi! Just wondering - do you have to eat your catered meals in the dining hall or can you pack it to go / bring it up to your room? Thanks in advance :)
Orange Puffle so your meals will always be eaten in the dining hall and you can’t take them to your room. The exception is if you sign up for a packed lunch or supper at breakfast they will make you a sandwich and give you crisps etc in a bag to take with you 😊
Hi , I'm going to be studying Mechanical Engineering at Durham from this year onwards , I've been allocated to St Chad's college I have absolutely no idea about the life in that college , can someone pls help me out on explaining about it? Thank you
I'm currently choosing what to firm between Durham and York (for Psychology). Leaning towards Durham, have been allocated Collingwood which is great, but am nervous due to there being no footage or anything of the Durham psych department itself (York has better marketing by a mile). Do you/any of your friends know whether the Psychology department is actually nice/has good facilities/nice lecture rooms etc? Didn't even get to see it on the open day :/ Great video, I also watched your Collingwood room tour one!
So actually lectures often aren't in the main psychology building as their rooms are not big enough capacity wise. They are usually on the main science site where the lecture halls are fairly new and great! As someone who only does half of the psych course this means I haven't had any contact hours in the main building but I have had tutorials in the new Psychology/Sociology building across the road with is very funky haha. All in all you definitely get all the facilities you need, even if they aren't directing in the same building all the time. Having said that they are all in about a five minute walk of each other so its pretty chill.
Latrell Hall Made up my mind in year 6. Now I’m in year 9 and today I got showed around for the first time. It’s so long to wait ( 4/5years) but I really hope I get in
Hi, I’ve seen on afew videos that you’re studying education at Durham! I’ve got an offer to study the subject with English next year there and wondered if there’s any pre-reading that you suggest? :)
I'm attending a Durham open day in a couple of weeks time and I want to study English as well as take part in theatre in my spare time. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which colleges are the best to look around for myself OR any tips on what to do/look at during my visit?!?!
Rachel Naylor honestly you’re best bet is looking around at as many colleges as you can to get a feel for them. Maybe the ones closer to the department if you don’t want to get up early? Do you want catered or noncatered? Also, look at the town! It’s pretty small so if you don’t like it, it’s don’t the place for you really 😬
@@Slidetotheleft hahaha I'm definitely looking at Collingwood and also St Cuthberts and Josephine butler I think!? Do you know where abouts the English department is situated just so I can get an idea of how far away each of the colleges are?!
what do you think of Stephenson college? I applied for Collingwood and got this instead, am a little bit disappointed cos it’s in the middle of nowhere but at least I got into Durham....
there isn't much information as its a new college to Durham. I don't know much about the college itself but everyone I know in it seems it love it x There's always opportunities to get involved in stuff outside of your college so don't feel like it will restrict you
Love it. We'd love to show this on Tyne and Wear TV on our regular segment showcasing great local videos from social media. Would you be happy to let us broadcast this with a credit to you
unfortunately when I made this video Stevo actually didn't exist IN Durham as it was actually still in Stockton! I promise I wasn't just being a twat haha
You said that you start looking for your second year home in November? Wow..how you find the right people in just one mouth after meeting them?😂😂 I am really stressing myself about this moving in 2 year.
Ana Ionescu don’t stress about it now!! That is quite early for unis in general but the key is not to panic. Honestly your house mates don’t have to be your best friends, just people you think you can be civil with for two years haha.
Nope! If you apply for student accommodation you will definitely get it but even if you don't live in college you can still get involved in college (or university-wide) societies - it wont restrict you!
Michael Mike29 nope! All the colleges are split so that each has an relatively equal number from each course so it’s really great for meeting people doing other subjects to you 😊
armlink trash _11 not that I’m biased or anything but it’s probably worth applying for Collingwood as it’s really hard to get into castle as literally everyone applies there. Also the chances of you actually living in the castle are very slim 😬😬
@@Slidetotheleft are there any major differences between the two from the point of view of a student? i'm charmed by the beautiful buildings and the castle itself, but i know that literally everyone wants to get to Castle🙁
I looked at both colleges and collingwood was by far superior. The facilities are high quality, the community felt nice and it was in a good location. Most people apply to castle because of the idea of living in a castle however the majority of people don’t get accommodation inside the castle and the rooms aren’t as nice as collingwoods. Hope this helped xx
