Despite fixing and setting up guitars myself for many decades, I still watched this video and enjoyed it a ton. You explained everything very, very well. The penny trick is super handy! And that last part about the string buzz that you couldn't figure out but eventually did is also great for others with the same rare problem. Great vid and I hope it has helped and continues to help as many people as possible. Take care!🤘

You know you are one of the best guitar setup guys to explain things I've known how to adjust Floyd Rose for a long time now but in the beginning I had to learn and understand it all and the main thing was the truss rod because that's supposed to always be done first and they're always talking about the truss rod first but they never even get into it they talk about making sure the bridge is level to the body and then tune it and how to set the fine tuners in the middle I mean it just goes on and on and yet they never get to the trash rod but that's the first thing they say they say in the beginning of the video is the truss rod have to be done first and because of not it being explain right they never say make sure the bridge plate on the Floyd Rose is level to the body tune your guitar and then check your relief on your truss rod that's how they never explain it the Way You Are I've never seen anyone say it perfect like you just said and using a penny for low action on the 12th fret is great is a perfect simple way that I've done I've done plenty times myself and then after that if the action it's still fretting out then raise the two screws on each side of the Floyd Rose you're saying with your penny which is great I've done that a lot but you see they never explained it like that they talk about the truss rod is the first thing to do anyway you get my point so great video the only thing that bugs me this is almost a perfect video it's just when you kept your finger on the first fret and on the Bonham fret do you hear the noise do you hear the noise that went on for a while instead of just saying slide a penny under the 12th fret again after raising the bridge but it's your thing and it's cool I love it and I just wanted to honor you for the first video that I seen out of I couldn't even count how many that you explain this trust Rod perfectly it's nice meeting you rock on in May you have a joyful fulfilled life God bless God bless you❤

Wow. Thanks for that my friend. That is quite the endorsement and the best message I have ever gotten. Heck, my wife made me read it out loud so she could hear it. I always try to be as thorough as possible because I have seen so many videos that kind of cut corners and you are left there saying, well what about this, or what about that. I think everyone should work on their own equipment, within reason of course, because at the end of the day no one knows exactly how you like your guitar but you. Quick story of why though, I bought a guitar at sweetwater, paid for the plek and the setup and when I got it the guitar was terrible. That cost me an extra 300 and I said no more. I had to completely redo the guitar and level the frets, which amazed me because of the plek. Luckily my sales guy at sweetwater reimbursed me that money on my next purchase, but from that point on I always did it myself and wanted to share what I know. Again. Thanks my friend. I greatly appreciate it.

@TraceTaylor3

Yeah it is amazing the difference of the guitar when you get it dialed in. My J Custom has the lowest action of any of my guitars. It does have a little more than usual fret buzz on a clean channel but it is lightening fast. Luckily I was able to get the neck dead straight on that one. 1070's are great guitars aren't they? I love mine and for the money unbeatable.

@@TraceTaylor3 Absolutely, I love my rg6pfgmltd, but the s1070pbz is just more articulate when I'm playing lead or rhythm. And the through the body bolt on construction is just brilliant, and brings out even more sustain. @@DiMarzio-Tone yeah I am a serious bolt on neck person. I like being able to control the neck completely. If I cannot get a guitar setup to exactly how I like it, I like having the option to shim the neck to put it where I want it. I only have buzz on the G string around the 13 to 16 fret. It's a Floyd rose bridge the string action looks fine bridge is aligned properly. Please any suggestion would be really helpful
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 2 года назад
That actually is not that uncommon. That string is basically a core string from the 3 strings above it. And that is usually the one that comes out of tune first. Regardless, if you have fret buzz around just a couple of frets that usually means you have a fret that is too low or one that is too high, and that will cause it to buzz across generally 3 frets. If the other strings are good then you probably have a fret issue and will need to have those frets leveled. If you have a very small piece of metal....like a metal ruler, but you will need to cut it no longer then the span of 3 frets. You can put the skinny edge of the ruler starting at the suspect fret and go back two frets, lay it across the three frets and see if it rocks even very slightly. if not move up one fret and try it again. If you have a fret that is too low or too high somewhere moving across those frets say from 10 to 19 with the edge of the metal ruler, you will get a slight rock from it and that will let you know where the high for low fret is.

I recently bought an Ibanez RG655 second hand from ebay at really good price and good condition . The action was not great on it I lowered the bass side to max and it was still too high. I measured frets wiv a fret rocker and all seem good . I thought I will have to take it to a local guitar repair guy . I saw this video as recently discovered your channel which I think is great my kind of thing my kind of music . I followed the steps on it and learnt something on a good quality shredder guitar the angle of the trem affects the action and playability . I realised the trem was set too high so I lowered it back and adjusted the truss rod correctly . Noe the action is fantastic really low with no Buzz. Even sounds better somehow . This is very good video for people who are not that great at setting up guitars . Thanks for the info. Also good luck getting to your subscriber Target Pete

I have esp eclipse, i used 11-49 daddario in e tuning, i changed to 10-46 and set up everything truss rod, string height and intonation and lately i develop this fret buzz or elevated fret in high E and B about 15-18 fret. Could it be because it is "Set Neck"guitar not neck thru, i dont know 😅 only those 3 frets (15-18 e, b) and when i bend notes it sound like shit
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 3 года назад
It is weird but that seems to be a very common issue in guitars on the high e and b around 15. Did you check your string height at the 12th? you want to be at 3/64. That is a standard action setup and where I keep all my guitars set. EVH guitars come from the factory at 3/64. I would check that first and make sure you are not lower than that as when you go below 3/64 your frets need to be damn level or they will fret out like hell. What is sounds like to me is that you went down quite a bit in gauge and the neck does not have enough relief as the tension between those to sets are quite different. Always start with the action. Get it to 3/64 using the truss. Does your guitar have a floyd or fixed bridge. If it has a floyd the trem will set back with a lighter gauge string and will also cause the problem. Please let me know. Thanks

Great video. As a player I have done 6 string setups on my own stuff for a number of years, and after having some issues with my Schecter C1 (which I had been able to set to lower action than the SG, Paul, PRS or Gretsch originally..) I decided to do a fret level - just too many high frets when rocking.. All frets were down properly, and I was pleased with the leveling, fall off and polishing. When I try to obtain the original actions heights again though, all notes are clean on all strings, but bends on the high E and B strings above the 12th fret choke if they are more than a full step... unless I bring the action up of course. Relief is set to spec. Looking for a little better if possible - Thoughts please.... Best regards and Thank you
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 2 года назад
How is the action at the nut? I had a similar problem with one of my guitars and what I did was sand the nut down to where the strings had no clearance at the 1st fret, then I used aluminum foil....I use this because it is easy to control and very very thin, and then spaced it back up incrementally until I had clearance, then reset the action and that cured my issues. The action at the nut end was too high and I was trying to compensate by lower it through relief and at the trem which was causing me to set the trem to low to get what I liked. After correcting the nut end, I could then correct the entire setup. Most people don't mess with the nut or locking side but that plays a very important part in the overall setup. Let me know if the nut is correctly set. Thanks

" drop me a line " my G string makes a buzz when i fret it and i have no idea what causes it. i had in the first E string such a buzz and got rid of it by relieving the neck via trus rod but that G string did not change at all. i changed to a 007 set of strings so i think the issue may be on the brigdge / tremolo but i am not sure. 1- string changed 2- Neck reliev to get rid of the butt of the first E and that worked but the G string causes that tinny sound if you can tell me where the issue is that would be very nice thank you so much appreciate it
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 5 месяцев назад
The dreaded G string. Every guitar players nightmare. Is it a locking trem or non locking. It sounds like you are having a nut issue. Even if it is a locking nut, after a while it will groove a little and cause the string to be to low. However, if it is locking it is an easy fix. Just shim the bridge a little and see if it cures the issue. If not a locking nut, the nut slot may be too low and the others will have to be cut to make them all the same then shim the nut back up. Check the clearance at the first fret on all the strings. There should be barely any clearance, just enough to make it noticeable....and I mean barely. You will have to use a light to see. If there is hardly no clearance on the G then it will be a nut issue. IF all the clearances are the same, then raise the bridge a little then correct the action by straightening the neck a little to bring the action back down.

@@IronClan2024definitely change that nut out. They are a cheap fix. There are a lot of good ones out there that are not plastic. Plastic wears really fast and your stings will actually bind up in them causing you all kinds of issues. It's really easy to do and if you get a nut file you can do it all yourself and get it perfect. Just file, tune and test....and keep repeating that until you get it right where you want it.

Since that is on the head stock side and your neck is correct, I would shim the locking nut. I use aluminum foil because of its thinness and I can shim the nut in incredibly small increments until I get what i want. Usually if my nut is too tall, I will grind it down lower then what I need then shim it back up.

Great video ! I left my guitar for about 2 weeks without strings to do some fretboard cleaning and when I put new strings ( same gauge ) I immediately noticed some buzzing (when unplugge but still very very annoying ) in the 3 low strings and in particular frets . For example in the 5th and then to some of the lowest frets . What's the cause of this problem? Is the neck going to do the job after finally being with strings and getting back its usual tension during the first days or should I worry more ? I tried to clean and polish frets and now I can't enjoy playing... Thanks in advance for your time !
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 3 года назад
When you leave the strings off for a while the neck usually does not return to where it was before. Wood is like everything else and once it gets in a position it likes to be in it tries to stay there. Having the strings off for a couple of weeks gave the wood time to reset into a non tension state, but the fix should be pretty easy. First check and see if you have any relief in the neck. Fret at the first fret low e and around the 15th fret low e with the other hand. look at the string and see if you have any relief, a down bow, under the string. If not then that is the issue and a couple of quarter turns on the truss should fix that. If you do have some relief then raise the bridge on the low e side but in quarter turns only. Check the string height. you want 3/64 over the 12th fret on high and low e. if both are set to there then all should be good. New strings do have a tendency to buzz a bit more then what you are used to. Personally I hate new strings but you have to change them. Let me know if this helps. Thanks

@@TraceTaylor3 Thanks a lot for your response . I had my guitar checked by a technician . He fixed my intonation issue ( I had no idea of that problem before , I'm relatively new to electric guitar ) and set the neck right . The annoying buzz is still there ... Is there any chance that the frets are uneven now after the neck adjustment? Do I need fret leveling? I will take it to another tech cause I just can't be ok with that amount of buzz.
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 3 года назад
@@manosg7325 Remember it is an electric guitar so if you are going to have decent action you will have some fret buzz. Everyone of my guitars does buzz a little bit, mostly from 8 and down to one. The action if set correctly is going to be very low at fret one and can go as high at fret 5 and this is usually where the buzzing occurs. New strings make it much worse because they are so much brighter. Now if it is buzzing really bad when you fret it you might need to check the frets. If they are nickle they will wear especially if you do a lot of chording like you would on an acoustic. If they are stainless then that is not the issue unless the frets were not leveled good at the build which does happen. But then again, when it comes to electrics it really is how much buzz can you live with. The faster the action the more the buzz. Now, with all that being said....I check my frets once a year to see if one has become high or too low, and inevitably I usually have to do a little work.

I went to a different Luthier and now apart from the initial buzz I have a TERRIBLE buzz in 2nd fret G string and generally bad and noticeable in the GBE strings . I will visit another Luthier now . The thing is that the guitar was perfectly fine when I bought it and for quite long ( until I left it with no strings for a few weeks as i mentioned in a previous comment) . It is said that with truss rod adjustments will be ok etc . If it was ok with zero buzzing why could it not be returned to that situation? Was the thing with the period without strings that did a permanent damage? I just hate it it's so annoying .

About a business card under the FRETTED 12th.. but a penny under a none fretted 12 seems a little high ...maybe I like my action a little lower ..🤔
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 3 года назад
About a penny is 3/64 which is standard action on a guitar. That way you get still pretty fast action with minimal fret buzz. That should be about a business card if you hold the freight from the first to the last fret at the 12th fret
@chriscrooks8617

I used the card trick an still get a little buzz but do the penny under it will go away but if it’s to high then use a rubber band cut it an set it on 12th fret an tie it around the neck an it will go away to your liking.

@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 3 года назад
Is it the same for guitar and bass? That really kind of depends on your playing style. I have one of my Ibanez guitars set At 2/64 because I wanted to be a little faster. If you play bass more like a guitar and honestly that should be OK but if you’re getting into slap bass or heavy fingerpicking you will probably have to raise it

Can you please amend your video? It's very interesting but if you turn the rod as you showed you are actually reducing relief in the neck, on a side note I am really struggling to find the right spot of neck relief? Can you please show me in details how much relief we are talking about? What if it's starts buzzing on first frets? I guess I shall release the rod but how much???
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 3 года назад
turn the rod in 1/8 turns. You should have a little fret buzz around 1 2 and 3 frets if you want fast action. You only want enough relief to give you 3/64 clearance at the 12 fret. That should constitute to very little relief. If you get the action set at 3/64 at the 12 fret and you still have a lot of fret buzz at 1 and 2 you may need to shim the nut. I have had to do that on a few guitars. I usually use wax paper. It is super thin and moves it minimally. The nut is the one place people usually fail to check. And yes I will look at the video for how to turn the rod. Most of my guitars have the adjustment at the body side so I may have said that backwards.

@@TraceTaylor3 thanks but how much fret buzz are we talking about!? Truss rod seems to be already maxed out, if I push further, the buzz is really unbearable
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 3 года назад
@@marcocelestino4308 If you truss rod is maxed out then there is another problem. You should never have to take it one way or the other fully. What is the guitar? Is it a locking trem, fixed bridge? I started to cover this very problem in this video but it was getting way too long. If you has a lot of relief in it and it is still buzzing, how is your bridge set? you may need to raise the bridge then compensate for it by removing some of the relief to bring the action back down. Also check you nut height. With the guitar unfretted you should be able to slide a business card under the first fret. If you cannot not then your nut is sitting to low and will need to be shimmed. Normally you can fix that by adding relief but it sounds in your case you can't go any further. If you got time, try to find a really good guitar that is set up properly and listen to the amount of buzz it produces and compare it to yours. It will produce buzz but it comes down to how much can you live with. You don't want so much buzz that it comes through the amp on a clean channel because now it is killing your tone. But honestly I would raise the bridge a little, 1/8 turns to eliminate as much buzz as you can then pull a liitle relief out then back to the bridge then a little more relief until you find that sweet spot. It is there unless your frets are shot then that is a different issue. If all the parts of the guitar are good, it is just finding the balance between the bridge and the neck and that is just a matter of making a small adjustment at one end then the other and keep doing it till you find that right setup. Just try to keep the action at 3/64 as you work.

So i've got a new guitar, and i set it up the way i like it. There's pretty much no fret buzz, however, on the high strings, especially B string, when i pluck it - it sounds like it has some sort of a quack? This is most apparent up to 12th fret (even on open string). I have a slight relief, and the action on B string is about 0.06 inch/1.5mm. @@temorinkaari a lot of time with a locking nut the string will not be exactly in the right position. I had this same problem on one of my wolfgangs and it drove me crazy and took me forever to find. try changing your string gauge and see if that helps the issue. also apply nut sauce to both sides just to make sure there is not some kind of wierd minute bind happening with the string and where it makes contact to the bridge and the nut. Yeah that one is a little harder to explain.....but I am doing a video on this very thing.....and I will try and do it in the next day or two. The problem as I am sure you have guessed is that you either have a high fret or a low fret....both which cause buzzing but on different frets. You have to use a fret rocker - a piece of steel block - to find which is the problem fret and if it is high or low. If it is low you have to have the fret lifted....but the better solution is to remove it and put in another one then file to size. If it is a high fret you just have to file that one down to size. Give me a couple of days and I will go into my woodshop, cut some 4x4's and use them as frets on a huge guitar and give a demo on exactly how to do this.

@@TraceTaylor3 ya well it's way more than that. I have a fret rocker, bin filling for two days trying to fix this. it's crazy now my high E from the 16th to the 22 on a 24 fret guitar well they are all playing the same dead note. lol everything is straigh with a super small normal bow. I like low as possible action. everywere is fine except for there. and on the b string the 20th and 21th are also doing the same note. I dont want to turn up the bridge cause I like the action low. anyway I did make it go up some and it doesnt make anything better. I'm thinking it a bite of a twisted neck. I stop trying now. I was tapping and filling to no big changes. I will half to take it to a luthier and see what he thinks. might need to refret some. it sucks because it's a old guitar bought second hand for a good price. it will cost the same price to get it fixed. when you have 12 guitars you hope to fix stuff yourself. I also have a Charvel that I have had to shim the neck like crazy and still the action is to high. the floyd was replaced by a luthier because it was an older type and did not keep in tune but the guy put a type of floyd that is sitting so high on the guitar that the action sucks now and I cant bring it down. grrrrr. I will aslo show that one to the luthier next week if I can find one that is not booked like crazy. anyway the fret on the first one the Kramer are all straigh with each other so why are they playing the same note?? and 5-6 in a row lol like theres no video on this at all. people need to stop saying oh it's just a high fret that does that. I dont think so. old wood can do tricks on you and some are just not fixable I bet ya that much!

@TraceTaylor3 11 месяцев назад
@@christineblack4654 Yeah if the neck has even the slightest twist.....it is trashed. And old guitars if not properly stored and taken care of, the necks will move like crazy....especially in really dry areas. Whenever I store a guitar I loosen the strings completely to keep it from constantly pulling in the neck. If you go to the luthier and he says the neck it twisted....depending on the cost it may not be worth fixing. But luckily there are millions of necks out there to buy....even B necks that you can get really cheap...the problem is making it all fit correctly. that sucks dude. My EVH does have a 15° flat radius. The penny comes out to be right around 3/64 and both my Ibanez have 15.75 and it works just as well for those. If you’re going under a 12° radius then it won’t work that well but anything over 15 you should be pretty good

@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 Год назад
You can raise the bridge but that is only half of the equation. the goal is to get the neck as straight as possible. A good setup is a combination of the neck adjustment and the bridge adjustment. If your neck has a backbow then you can raise the bridge all the way up and it will not correct the problem. At that point you have to add a little relief to the neck then adjust the bridge accordingly.
