I use a block to make it fixed bridge briefly then tune the guitar. Once it’s perfectly tuned on fixed bridge I start adjusting the spring tension until the block drops or loosen up. That technique usually get it done very quickly.
@DennisTrovato
@DennisTrovato 3 года назад
For me the fastest way to do this is: Slightly overtighten the strings -> put an AA battery under the trem, which is the perfect size to keep it flush -> tune your strings -> remove battery -> loosen springs until its in tune again.

Man that bridge is heavy! All this iterative process has to be done with the guitar in playing position, not horizontally. Sometimes the bridge sits back in horizontal position because of gravity, but when in playing position is just fine.

I've finally properly setup my LTD M-330R that was given to us last month and it had quite a steep angle when we got it, it had a Floyd Rose special and it was really annoying to setup. Great video as usual Rob. When you tune the guitar to pitch. You go from string 6-1 as you explained clearly in your video. I learned to tune a Floyd by skipping from 6-1-5-2-4-3. I know it's like 2 sides of the same coin but I just wanted to get your opinion on it. I find it balances the bridge better when I'm tunning up but maybe I've been doing it wrong all along. Keep up the great work. 🤘

Great video and explanation. Over the years especially with floyds it was trial and Error regarding setting it up, like you said. But if you get used to it, it is actually not that difficult. The 3-spring method for me doesn't work, because it is for most string gauges in combination with different tunings to weak, especially in the triangle shape. The disadvantage of that spring shape is that most of the force is on the middle spring. I always go for the 4-spring method, also for tuning stability. I recently did a setup for my Caparison dellinger Chris Amott sig. It didn't stay in tune for some reason, replaced the springs (yes they wear out) and added a fourth spring and now it is rocksolid😎🤟

Excellent video. One thing I've always done a little differently is I like to leave the fine tuners backed off instead of mid way, and tune slightly flat on purpose before locking the nut down. Between 20 cents to pitch more on the heavier gauge strings than on the treble strings. Then tune to pitch with the fine tuners. Only because it leaves more adjustment room in the fine tuners as the strings age and stretch from playing. I only changed my strings maybe once a month or two when I was playing regularly, it's a lazy tactic 😂
@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld 3 года назад
Great tip! My only argument against this would be that I often find that the strings sharpen after tightening the nut screws. So you get everything in tune with the tuners, then tighten the nut screws, then do your final tuning on the fine tuners... And if the strings sharpened after tightening the nut screws, you need some room to back them off. Have you ever experienced this as well?
@tdarcs
@tdarcs 3 года назад
@@RobArnoldWorld I found that if you leave the strings just flat enough tightening the locking nut will bring them just about right to pitch, most of the time the nut has barely any effect on the treble strings. Sometimes the low E would be sharp but I fix that by skipping it in the fine tuner adjustments and by the time I come back around it's either right at pitch or slightly flat. And then by the next day I might have to give all of them a regular tune up with the fine tuners like normal.

I've never been able to get through a Floyd set up without putting holes in drywall or screaming into a pillow until my eyes are bloodshot, but Skyscraper's method and tools made the last Floyd set up I had to do near painless and pretty dang fast. This is a great explanation of how a Floyd works and how to set it up. A lot of the vids ignore how meticulous you really need to be if you want it to stay in tune. What work bench are you using to do a standing setup? That looks more comfortable than hunching over a table or a lap.

Maybe my method has a flaw... but I just block the bridge at a level plane. Tune up to desired pitch. Lock it. Remove block. Tighten or loosen springs til the 5th string is in tune again. A lot less back and forth. Seems solid and way less fiddley than the method in this video. Tell me why I'm wrong?

There's an interesting way to do this that requires less trial and error. It involves blocking the trem so that it stays flat, whether it's moving forward or backward. Once it's blocked and level, tune and stretch the strings out. After that you remove the block and either tighten or loosen the claw screws until it's level/in tune again.
@RobArnoldWorld

I have heard some folks talking about this method, but I'd have to try it myself and see it with my own eyes to believe it! haha

@@RobArnoldWorld I totally get that. Ben Eller has a video on it, which is where I learned about the idea. The only way it'll save you time is if you stretch the strings appropriately, otherwise you'll end up doing the same amount of work as the traditional method you demo'd. @@Hagstrom4ever I would doubt that the issue is your cab. I suppose one way to know though, would be to borrow a different cab from a friend or something, and then do some tests. For example, your rig will sound one way in a garage, and a completely different way in a closet.

@@RobArnoldWorld yeah, i did check the neck after watching that vid, mine looks good with a slight bow so gonna need to adjust the string height from the Floyd ? or should I adjust the neck to be more "straight" ?
@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld Год назад
@@kopan14 Personally I'd get the neck straight first, or suuuuuuuuper close to straight. And then if I still wasn't satisfied, then you simply lower your mounting studs, by turning them clockwise, a little at a time. So maybe start with a half turn on each, dive your bar back and fourth a few times to get things to settle, then retune, and see how it feels, being on the look out for fret buzz. Because now you'll play the balancing game of neck relief, vs bridge height. You obviously want the best feeling low action, with minimal fret buzz. (a little is acceptable). So after lowering your bridge, you may then need to back off the truss rod a touch, giving it a little more relief. Good luck! 🎸

Perfect float is most desirable! It's just kind of the way it "should be". I had to watch several videos to understand why you even needed to do this. At first, it seemed that people were harping on the fact that you can whammy both flat and sharp. That's really more of a consequence of the system at play. Leveling the bridge flat is paramount to staying in tune.

Hi Rob, 'm sure you know this.... But what about a Tremol-no system? That will speed up the process to lock it to change tuning? If I like a new Guitar but it's only got floyd rose style, I would swap out for the Tremol-no and set it to hardtail mode to change tuning.

@mitchvechart7164
@mitchvechart7164 Год назад
Here’s a scenario. Trying to restring with a different gauge, no matter what adjustments you make the bridge still sits like “/“ and I can’t get the strings to pitch AT ALL (some strings will go to pitch and others can’t get passed floppy without knocking everything else out). This is an Ibanez UV70P brand new, switching from Ernie ball super slinky 9-54 to regular slinky 10-56. Tuning is AEADGBe
@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld Год назад
Sounds like you need to tighten your trem claw screws! Switching to a higher gauge will cause your bridge to pop up in the back like you described, and you can counteract that by tightening the trem claw screws. But perhaps you've already tried that approach, and the issue is something deeper? Anyway, in a couple weeks, I'll be publishing a video where I'm doing a setup on a Floyd equipped guitar, and the new set of strings I plan to put on will effect my float. And so you can see how I'll go about it when only minor adjustments (hopefully) are needed. Keep en eye out!🎸

My problem is after set up is perfect. I use the tremolo bar and the strings go out of tune. These strings have been on for a while so they should not still be stretching. I have ordered heavier springs, I hope that works. What are your thoughts?
@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld 10 дней назад
I find that if strings are too old, they tend to not hold tune as well. So you have the right mindset that new strings need to be stretched, but as strings get older, they tend to stretch themselves out of tune a little. But in terms of your guitar going out of tune after using the whammy bar, that's a different can of worms. A quality bridge definitely stays in tune better after using the whammy, and in general. The same goes for a quality guitar. I've found that cheaper guitars NEVER stay in tune no matter what. You can also make sure your bridge is seated properly, and not moving around at all when you use the whammy bar. Good luck!

Great video, I just bought my first guitar with a Floyd Rose (Special)....I went to restring it and am currently struggling now with a bridge that leans forward as you've shown - its causing the strings to be dropped a half step even after I stretched them out the way you recommended....I am going to try and adjust the springs in the back as you demonstrated, my question is, is that safe to do with the guitar tuned up, or should I loosen them first? I'm worried that I'll somehow break the springs or f**k the bridge up even more! lol its so frustrating

No need to loosen the strings! You'll obviously have to retune them though, after any spring adjustments. As I demonstrate, it will probably take multiple adjustments, in small increments, to get things just right. Good luck!
