Echo tops up to 62k feet!?! That's incredible. I'm surprised they didn't get pounded by gorilla hail! I live in the Midwest and by happenstance I tuned into a Houston TV station that was streaming live on RU-vid when that storm was approaching that city. Inspite of the incredible widespread damage, it was fascinating to watch the coverage. And I saw something I had never seen before. As Tim mentioned, a tornado warning was in effect for much of Harris County and the Houston metro as the storm approached. Then the TV meteorologists announced that the NWS had also just issued a Destructive Thunderstorm Warning for the area...and they described that warning as a step above a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. I had never heard of a Destructive Thunderstorm Warning issued by the NWS before that event.

That's a product of being in a tropical air mass pretty far south more than anything. It's too warm/moist even up high for big hail production.

Hail produced when there is high lapse rates with low wind shear

They even go up to a PDS (particularly dangerous situation) severe thunderstorm warning.

Thank you Tim. Once again the Power grid in Texas has been compromised. It seem the entire system in Texas is like so much their infrastructure across the country, in dire need of updating. Thank you for covering this event I look for more info on this in future videos as a historic event. Have a good weekend.

I can't believe how dark it got in Houston. Poor people. All the damage. So sad.

The structure and approach of the storm reminds me a lot of 'hurricane' Elvis in Memphis back in 2003 with a narrow bow echo with extremely intense wind pivoting around a meso supercellish storm just to the north and a relatively short path for a derecho. There was a 113 mph gust with the memphis storm and the one in Houston almost certainly exceeded 100 mph to bring down transmition towers.

I don't know if it was possible or instructive, but it would have been interesting to look at some 3D images, radar and cross sections, of the Houston event. Cheers and have a great weekend Tim. Thanks again!

This just shows that so many people don’t pay attention to the weather which is sad and then they complain
