Both continuous drive friction welding (CDFW) and inertia welding (IW) are solid-state welding processes that join two metals by applying heat and pressure without using any filler material. The main difference between these two processes lies in how they generate heat and apply pressure to the metals being welded. In CDFW, the two metal parts to be joined are rotated against each other at high speeds, generating heat due to friction between the two surfaces. Then, pressure is applied to the parts to forge them together. The rotation continues throughout the welding process until the joint is complete. In contrast, IW uses a similar principle of generating heat through friction, but instead of rotating the parts, one part is held stationary while the other part is rotated at high speeds. The rotational energy is then quickly transferred to the stationary part, generating heat due to friction, and the parts are pressed together to form a weld joint. In terms of advantages, CDFW has the ability to join dissimilar metals and can produce high-strength welds with excellent fatigue resistance. It is also suitable for joining complex shapes and parts of varying thickness. However, CDFW may be limited by the size of the parts that can be welded, and the process may require more energy compared to IW. IW, on the other hand, is known for its high production rates and its ability to join large and heavy parts. It is also a more energy-efficient process compared to CDFW. However, IW may not be suitable for welding dissimilar metals or materials with vastly different melting points, and the process may require precise control over the rotational speed to ensure a successful weld joint.
